Religious jubilarians celebrated at Mass

With this issue, Chicago Catholic salutes and thanks the religious men and women who have devoted their lives to serving the people of God. In the following pages, we honor hundreds of teachers, nurses, chaplains and parish priests who have given anywhere from 25 to 80 years in service of the Lord. Join us in offering them our gratitude.

Women Religious

Sisters of St. Agnes

70 years

Sister Mary Dennis McMahon, a Chicago native, taught in elementary and secondary schools, was an associate superintendent of Catholic schools, librarian, did auxiliary services and was a substitute teacher. She served at St. Zachary, Des Plaines; St. Nicholas Evanston; St. Joseph (North Side); St. Thomas of Canterbury; and in New York, Indiana and Wisconsin. She now lives and prays at Nazareth Court.

60 years

Sister Rose Clare Ehrlich ministered in elementary education, music, pastoral ministry and liturgy. She served at St. Nicholas, Evanston, for six years and in Wisconsin, Indiana and New York. She is the music director at St. Paul of the Cross, Columbus City, and St. Joseph, Bluffton, both in Indiana.

50 years

Sister Sonia Miley was a nurse, nurse practitioner and administrator. She served at Mercy Hospital, St. Bernard Hospital, Rush University, Cook County Hospital and Michael Reese Health Plan; was at Unity House; and worked in Kentucky and Wisconsin. She is a regional coordinator for the Sisters of St. Agnes in the U.S.

Sisters of St. Casimir

60 years

Sister Mary Louise Andrulonis was an educator, and principal and worked in health care and social services. She served at Our Lady of Vilna School; St. Pius X, Stickney; Immaculate Conception (44th Street); Nativity BVM; St. Bartholemew, Waukegan; and was director of the community’s food pantry. She also ministered in New Mexico, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska and Pennsylvania. She does ministry of prayer and presence at Franciscan Village, Lemont.

Sister Margaret McTaggart was an educator, social worker, pastoral minister and receptionist. She served at St. Pius X, Stickney; St. Clement; Immaculate Conception (44th Street); Providence of God; the motherhouse/St. Casimir Center; at other archdiocesan schools and in Pennsylvania, New Mexico and Argentina. She is a receptionist for Catholic Charities at the St. Casimir Center and also does ministry of prayer and presence.

Sister Theresa Papsis, from All Saints Parish, was an educator and organist. She served at Sts. Peter & Paul; Immaculate Conception (44th Street); St. Norbert, Northbrook; Providence of God; Nativity BVM; Maria High School; the motherhouse/St. Casimir Center; and in Pennsylvania and Lithuania. She does ministry of prayer and presence at Franciscan Village, Lemont.

Sister Deborah Romanuski was an educator at St. Anthony, Cicero; Holy Cross; St. Bartholomew, Waukegan; All Saints; Immaculate Conception; Our Lady of Vilna/St. Paul; and in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Florida and New Mexico. She does ministry of prayer and presence at Franciscan Village, Lemont.

Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul

60 years

Sister Cecile Matushek, from Our Lady of Peace Parish, was an educator, administrator and local community superior. She worked for 26 years as vice president of mission integration in health care. She served in Missouri, Arizona, Louisiana and Texas. She does ministry of prayer at the Sarah Community, Bridgeton, Missouri.

Sister Judith Warmbold ministered in education, parish and social work ministry, was a counselor and provincial vocation coordinator for her Daughters of Charity community and was director of mission development and local community superior at Marillac House Chicago and in other locations. She worked in Missouri, Arkansas, Nebraska, Texas and Illinois. She now is a counselor at the DePaul USA DAX program for students in housing crisis in Chicago.

Sisters of Christian Charity

75 years

Sister Pauline Schafer was an educator, tutor and congregational leader. She served at St. Aloysius; St. Gregory; St. Theresa, Palatine; in the Josephinum literacy program; with the Companions of Pauline; with the SCC Associates; in Chillicothe, Illinois; and in Minnesota, Missouri and Michigan. She now resides at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette, and is the coordinator of Companions of Pauline.

70 years

Sister Rosemary Schwer was a college teacher, nurse, director of a medical secretary program, administrator, congregational leader, minister of care, pastoral and bereavement minister, provincial councilor, Companions of Pauline coordinator, organist and driver. She served at St. Elizabeth Hospital; Sacred Heart Convent, Maria Immaculata Academy and Mallinkrodt College and St. Joseph Church, Wilmette; and in Missouri, Louisiana, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Arizona and New Mexico. She is retired at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette, and does prayer and presence ministry.

Sister Alice Mary Ortmann was a teacher, congregational leader, Montessori director and program head, college admissions and aspirant director; Mallinkrodt High School Alumnae Association director; and provincial councilor. She served at St. Aloysius School; St. Theresa School, Palatine; St. Mary School, Riverdale; Mallinkrodt College and Ronald Knox Montessori School, where she was a board member, director and teacher; and Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette, where she now does light duties, writes local annals and is a part-time receptionist.

Sister Francetta Scherer was a teacher, teacher’s aide, tutor, caregiver, cook, housekeeper and gardener. She served at her community’s motherhouse and Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette; in Clarendon Hills, Illinois; and in Louisiana.

40 years

Sister Carol Bredenkamp was a teacher, vocation directress and minister, provincial councilor, congregational leader and treasurer. She served at St. Theresa, Palatine; St. Joseph, Wilmette; St. Aloysius; Josephinum High School; Heather’s House-Aid for Women; and in Michigan and Missouri. She is at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette and teaches at Josephinum Academy.

Adrian Dominicans

80 years

Sister Marie Bride (Therese Rita) Walsh, a Chicago native, taught at Aquinas High School and Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette, for 31 years. She is retired at the Adrian Dominican motherhouse, Adrian, Michigan.

75 years

Sister Noreen Marie (Mary Elizabeth) George was a teacher, administrator and librarian. She served at Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette, and at St. Cyprian, River Grove. She is retired in La Grange.

Sister Mary (Therese Johanna) Scheibel, a Chicago native, taught at Infant of Prague, Flossmoor; Our Lady of Loretto, Hometown; and St. Nicholas of Tolentine. She is retired at the Adrian Dominican motherhouse, Adrian, Michigan.

70 years

Sister Joyce (Rose Dolores) LaVoy taught at St. Carthage. She is retired in Adrian, Michigan, but continues to minister in liturgy and music.

Sister Anastasia (John Leo) McNichols, a Chicago native, was chapter prioress for the Adrian Dominican Sisters in the Upper Midwest Mission, Hometown; administrator for retired sisters at Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette; campus minister, Marist High School; grief minister, Parkside Chapel; group facilitator for the elderly, Peace Memorial Village, Palos Park; and volunteer at Little Company of Mary Hospital, Evergreen Park. She is retired at the Adrian Dominican motherhouse, Adrian, Michigan.

60 years

Sister Teresa (Joseph Henrice) Disch taught at St. Mary of Mount Carmel and Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette; was associate director of permanent diaconate formation, Oak Park; and was a pastoral counselor/spiritual director at Catholic Counseling Associates, Westchester. She is retired at the Adrian Dominican motherhouse, Adrian, Michigan.

Sister Dorothy (Paul Dennis) Glaister, a Chicago native, was program manager at St. Coletta of Illinois, Palos Park; administrator of Sertona Center, Alsip; and a reading consultant and religious education director, Cardinal Bernardin School, Orland Hills. She is retired at the motherhouse, Adrian, Michigan.

Sister Jo Ann (Jane Clement) Jauquet was a teacher, director of religious education and pastoral minister. She served at St. Joseph, Homewood; and St. Albert the Great, Oak Lawn; and in Michigan. She is retired in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Sister Mary Jean (Marie Jean) Keeley, a Chicago native, was an administrative assistant, psychologist, teacher-supervisor, director and budget coordinator. She served at the Loyola Guidance Center; Christian Brothers Counseling Center, Westchester; and at Marillac House Social Center. She is retired in La Grange.

Sister Joan (Marie Killian) Krajewski was a teacher and administrator. She served at Santa Maria de Popolo, Mundelein; St. Mary Star of the Sea; St. Kilian; St. Gerald, Oak Lawn; as an administrator for her congregation’s retirement program, Hometown; and at Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette. She is retired in Adrian, Michigan.

Sister Mary Kay (William Mary) Moran taught at Our Lady of Loretto, Hometown, and St. Edmund, Oak Park, and taught religion at Sacred Heart Schools. She is retired at the Adrian Dominican motherhouse, Adrian, Michigan.

Sister Susan (Ann Marc) Van Baalen was a teacher and administrator at Our Lady of Good Counsel; St. Nicholas of Tolentine; Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette; and Aquinas Dominican High School. She lives in Warren, Michigan, and ministers as director of Ministry Trust for the Adrian Dominican Sisters.

Sister Jane (Marie Eucharia) Zimmerman was a teacher, administrator, spiritual director and practicum supervisor. She served at Our Lady of Knock, Calumet City; St. Rita; Infant Jesus of Prague, Flossmoor; St. Matthew; St. Denis; and the Institute for Spiritual Leadership. She lives in Chicago, where she is a part-time spiritual director.

Dominican Sisters of Peace

70 years

Sister Melita Bearinger was a teacher, principal and business manager. She served at St. Jane de Chantal and in Louisiana, New York, New Mexico, Ohio and Pennsylvania. She does prayer and service at the congregation’s motherhouse in Columbus, Ohio.

Sister Rose Anthony was a teacher, principal, secretary, bookkeeper, clerical worker and community coordinator of volunteers. She served at Our Lady of the Wayside, Arlington Heights; St. Michael, Orland Park; and in Indiana, Kentucky, Nebraska, West Virginia and New York. She does prayer and service at the Sansbury Care Center, St. Catharine, Kentucky.

Sister Virginia Mary Sammett was a teacher, principal, and reading specialist. She served at Our Lady of the Wayside, Arlington Heights; and in Massachusetts, New York and Iowa. She does prayer and service at her community’s motherhouse in St. Catharine, Kentucky.

65 years

Sister Alverda Bonifas worked in food service and as a dietary supervisor, pastoral associate, chaplain and volunteer. She served at St. Joseph Hospital, in Nebraska and in St. Catharine, Kentucky, where she does prayer and service at her community’s motherhouse.

Sister Colleen Gallagher was a teacher, principal, musician, pastoral minister, chaplain, administrator, promoter of the arts and volunteer. She served at St. Jane de Chantal and in Ohio, Indiana, New York, Michigan, Puerto Rico and Ireland.

Sister Jean Goering was a teacher, nurse’s aide, receptionist, clerk, pastoral minister, liturgist, supervisor, housing counselor, project coordinator, director of religious education and tutor. She served at Marillac House and in Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Massachusetts and New York. She does community service at her community’s motherhouse in Great Bend, Kansas.

Sister Joan Marie Hill was a teacher, nurse’s aide, domestic worker and volunteer aide to the elderly. She served at Our Lady of Peace School and in Ohio, Louisiana, Massachusetts and Kentucky. She does prayer and service at the Mohun Health Care Center, Columbus, Ohio.

Sister Nancy Rioux was a teacher, parish secretary, vocational rehab supervisor, television representative and volunteer. She served at St. Bartholomew School; in Mattoon, Illinois; and in Louisiana, New York, Massachusetts and St. Catharine, Kentucky, where she does prayer and presence at Sansbury Care Center.

60 years

Sister Marlene Dimmerling was a teacher, principal, guidance counselor, pastoral minister, director of religious education, pastoral associate and mission group coordinator. She served at St. Jane de Chantal and in Wisconsin, Connecticut and in Ohio, where she is a volunteer and does community service at the Columbus motherhouse.

Sister Mary Claire Kirkpatrick was a teacher, principal, director of religious education, vicariate/religious education consultant/area coordinator, pastoral associate and pastoral minister and did community service. She served at St. Michael School, Orland Park, and in Kentucky, Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey. She now is a volunteer in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Sister Pauline LaMothe was a spiritual director, group facilitator, educator, congregational leader and did extensive ministry to the poor and homeless. She served at the Claret Center, St. Bartholomew and in Massachusetts. She does spiritual direction at the Claret Center, Hyde Park.

Sister Helen McCarthy was a teacher, secretary, assistant treasurer, southern regional coordinator and parish minister. She served at St. Michael School, Orland Park; in Mattoon, Illinois; and in West Virginia, Kentucky and Massachusetts, where she now is the house coordinator, Rosary Manor, Watertown.

Sister Joan Wolf was a teacher, CCD coordinator, parish minister, counselor, and mission group coordinator. She served in Chicago providing counseling services and at Loyola University, and in Colorado, Canada and Kansas, where she is co-liturgist and does outreach ministries at the Great Bend motherhouse.

50 years

Sister Harriet Agnew was a teacher, pastoral minister, religion coordinator, Christian formation coordinator, pastoral associate, nurse, nursing assistant and caregiver to infants and children. She served at St. Fidelis and St. Boniface; and in Tennessee, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Michigan and Ohio, where she now is a staff nurse at the Akron motherhouse.

Sister Christine Connolly was a teacher, administrative assistant, vocation minister/spiritual director and residence hall rector. She served at the Claret Center and Catholic Theological Union; and in Mississippi, Massachusetts, Kentucky, Indiana and New York, where she is the spiritual director/retreat director at the Dominican Retreat and Conference Center, Niskayuna.

Sister Arleen Kisiel was a teacher, guidance counselor, administrator, family minister, coordinator of continuing care, case supervisor, member of her community’s leadership team and mission group coordinator. She served at St. Jane de Chantal; in Romeoville, Illinois; and in Pennsylvania, Michigan, New York, Canada and in Ohio, where she is the pastoral care director at the Mohun Health Care Center, Columbus.

Sister Judy Morris was a teacher, parish social service coordinator, case manager, director of development, social worker, medical social worker, administrative assistant, director of the office of social concerns, coordinator of community relations, case worker, field representative and promoter of justice. She served at Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago and in Tennessee, Florida, New York, Mississippi and in Kentucky.

Sister Janet Schliehting was an art teacher in both grade school and high school, a member of the Dominican Preaching Team and the liturgy coordinator/spiritual growth team, administrator, retreat director, program director, adult faith formation minister and liturgist. She served at the Dominican Conference Center, River Forest; and in Ohio, North Carolina, Arkansas, Indiana, New York, Missouri and in Pennsylvania, where she now is at the Eccelesia Center, Girard.

Sinsinawa Dominicans

75 years

Sister Ellen Shannon was a teacher, principal, pastoral minister, convent coordinator and business officer. She served at St. Basil; St. Richard; Visitation; St. Patrick, Lemont; St. Luke, River Forest; and in Wisconsin, South Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, Washington and Oklahoma. She lives in community at the Sinsinawa motherhouse.

Sister Loretta (Mary Nathan) Zemaitis, from St. Gall Parish, taught at Visitation High School; provided food and clothing for the poor at St. Basil Parish; taught religious education at the Parish Cooperative (St. Mary Magdalene and Immaculate Conception) in South Chicago; and ministered in Wisconsin; Washington, D.C.; Texas; Wyoming; South Carolina; and Florida. She lives in community at the Sinsinawa motherhouse.

70 years

Sister Marie (Domince) Condon, from St. Sabina Parish, was a teacher, elementary school administrator and pastoral minister and she did social work. She served at Visitation Grade School, St. Cajetan, St. Basil-Visitation Parish, Marillac House, the Learning Center and in Wisconsin, Florida, Iowa and Minnesota. She lives in community at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green, Wisconsin.

60 years

Sister Patricia (Romanus) Bauch taught, was a principal and did research and service. She served at St. Thomas More; St. Thomas of Villanova, Palatine; in Wisconsin; Maryland; South Dakota; California; Washington, D.C.; Alabama; and Washington; and in England. She also was named a Spencer Fellow of the American Academy of Education. She lives in community at the Sinsinawa motherhouse.

Sister Christa (Claudian) Cunningham was a teacher and pastoral minister and she did adult faith formation. She served at Sts. Faith, Hope and Charity, Winnetka; in Algonquin, Rockford and Dixon, Illinois; and in Alabama, Florida, Minnesota and Wisconsin. She lives in community at the Sinsinawa motherhouse.

Sister Barbara (Antonino) Hubeny, from Epiphany Parish, was a counselor and teacher and she worked in spirituality programs and retreats. She served at Trinity High School, River Forest, and in Minnesota, Wisconsin and in Michigan. She lives in community at the Sinsinawa motherhouse, where she is active in local community organizations and has served as treasurer of Dubuque Area Churches United since 2016.

Sister Virginia (Angelique) Kinsella, from St. Carthage Parish, was a teacher and educational administrator and did pastoral care. She served at St. Richard; St. Thomas More; St. John de la Salle; Academy of St. Benedict the African, Laflin Campus; in Freeport, Illinois; and in Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin. She lives in community at the Sinsinawa motherhouse.

Sister Mary Ann (Mary Mancini) Miller was a teacher and educational administrator. She served at St. Cajetan; St. Louis de Montfort, Oak Lawn; St. Giles, Oak Park; St. Brendan; and in Maryland, Iowa and Nebraska, where she is retired.

50 years

Sister Beverly Fowler taught and was a director of liturgy. She served at Queen of Peace High School, Burbank, and in Iowa and Wisconsin, where she has been with the Madison Metropolitan School District since 2002 and the Aldo Leopold Nature Center, Monona, since 2008.

Sister Helen Glynn, a Chicago native from St. Linus Parish, Oak Lawn, was a pastoral associate, teacher and nursing administrator, and she worked in community development. She served at Trinity High School, River Forest; Marist High School; St. Michael (Old Town); and in Wisconsin and Bolivia. She lives in community and volunteers in the Chicago area.

Sister Mary Ellen O’Grady, from Visitation Parish, worked in education, as a principal, in several leadership roles including as vicaress of the Western Province She served at Immaculate Conception (North Park Avenue); St. Luke, River Forest; and in South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and New York.

40 years

Sister Susan Ostrowski taught at Epiphany and in Wisconsin, New York and California. She lives in community at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green Wisconsin.

Dominican Sisters of Springfield, Illinois

60 years

Sister Margaret Ann (Mary Elizabeth) Cox was an educator who served at Marian Catholic High School, Chicago Heights; in Griffin; and in Springfield, Illinois, where she now does prayer ministry at Sacred Heart Convent.

Sister Mary Stanley Karnosky was an educator at St. James, Sauk Village; and in Arcola, Newton, Beardstown, Granite City and Springfield, Illinois, where she now does prayer ministry at Sacred Heart Convent.

Sister Agnes Ann Pisel was an educator who served at St. Christina; Marian Catholic High School, Chicago Heights; and in Carlinville, Arcola and Springfield, Illinois. She now is a home visitor at St. Irenaeus Parish, Park Forest.

Sister M. Georgiana Stubner, from Our Lady of Grace Parish, worked in religious education and pastoral ministry. She served at St. Christina; in Granite City, Sterling, Carlinville, Madison and Kankakee, Illinois; and in Ohio, Michigan and Peru. She is a receptionist at St. Ambrose Parish, Godfrey, Illinois.

Sister Mary Francella Vyverman worked in primary education and pastoral ministry. She served at St. Christina, St. John Bosco, and St. Edward; and in Decatur, Kincaid and Springfield, Illinois, where she now is a pastoral minister at the Cathedral parish.

Sister Catherine Anne (Mary Virgine) Yager, from Holy Rosary Parish, was a pastoral minister at St. John Bosco; St. Gertrude; St. Paul, Chicago Heights; in Tuscola, Rantoul and Rochelle, Illinois; and in Peru. She does community services, Sacred Heart Convent, Springfield, Illinois.

50 years

Sister Rose Marie (Mary Rachelle) Riley entered the convent from her home parish of St. Irenaeus, Park Forest. She worked in administration, pastoral ministry, mission services and teaching. She served at Our Lady of Grace; St. Lawrence O’Toole, Matteson; in Effingham; and in Springfield, Illinois, where she was the prioress and subprioress general of Dominican Sisters of Springfield; and in Arkansas. She is the director of Jubilee Farm, Springfield, Illinois.

Felicians

70 years

Sister Mary Barbara Cherek was an elementary school teacher and teacher aide at St. Helen; St. John of God; Holy Rosary, North Chicago; St. Joseph (S. Hermitage Ave.); St. Wenceslaus; Our Lady of Ransom, Niles; and in several Wisconsin towns. She works with International Cord Rosary, is a patient visitor and ministers in prayer at Mother of Good Counsel Central Convent.

Sister Mary Alvina Gill, from St. John of God Parish, was an elementary school teacher, nurse, director of nursing services, nursing home assistant administrator, local vicar and director of support services. She served at St. Wenceslaus, Sacred Heart, St. Joseph (S. Hermitage Ave.) and St. Andrew Life Center, Niles; in Centralia, Illinois; and in Wisconsin. She now does prayer ministry and assigned duties at Our Lady of the Angels Convent.

Sister Mary Dionette Werner, from St. Hedwig Parish, was an elementary school teacher, high school librarian, secretary and field advocate. She served at Holy Innocents; St. John of God; St. Helen; St. Wenceslaus; Providence High School, New Lenox; the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Metropolitan Tribunal; and in the Congregation for Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life and at the Generalate in Rome. She is at the Information Office and does translations at Our Lady of the Angels Convent.

60 years

Sister Mary Ramona Dombrowski taught elementary and secondary school; was a high school, hospital and assisted-living administrator; and served in province leadership. She served at St. Turibius; St. Hubert, Hoffman Estates; St. Bruno; Good Counsel High School; and in Milwaukee, where she now is the Ministry Boards Representative, Felician Services Inc.

Sister Mary Bernetta Ekedahl, from Sts. Peter & Paul Parish, was a teacher and principal and province leader. She served at St. Mary Magdalen; St. Stanislaus, Posen; St. Joseph High School (S. Hermitage Ave.); Holy Rosary, North Chicago; Good Counsel High School; Our Lady of the Angels; at the Provincialate; in Wisconsin; and at Mother of Good Counsel, where she is the local minister.

Sister Mary Gemma Franczak, from Holy Innocents Parish, was a teacher and principal, nursing assistant and day care teacher. She served at Sacred Heart; St. James; St. Wenceslaus; St. Damian, Oak Forest; St. Stanislaus, Posen; St. Joseph High School (S. Hermitage Ave.); at several locations in Wisconsin; and now at Our Lady of the Angels Care Center, Peterson Avenue.

Sister Mary Ellen Pollack, from St. Veronica Parish, was a teacher, office assistant, provincial treasurer, treasurer general, site administrator and property caretaker. She served at Good Shepherd; St. Andrew Home, Niles; Good Counsel High School; at the Provincialate; and as treasurer general at the Generalate in Rome. She is a driver for the Mother of Good Counsel Central Convent.

She is retired from full-time ministry but visits the sick and elderly through volunteer service at the La Grange Park center.

She was a member of the Maryknoll Sisters Bolivia pastoral team; an advocate for women and children at Cook County Jail; she ministered at Genesis House; 8th Day Center for Justice; Lutheran Social Services and Deborah’s Place. She continues doing social justice work as a member of the Congregation of St. Joseph Peace and Justice Committee and coordinates the congregation’s immigration initiative.

Sister Mary Schaefer, an alumna of Nazareth Academy, La Grange Park, taught in elementary schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago; on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota; and in Mississippi. She served as director of religious education on the Wind River Indian Reservation, Wyoming, working with the Arapaho people for many years; in the same capacity with Chicago-area parishes; and in Wisconsin. She also was a member of the leadership council of her congregation. She works as an aide for the retired sisters there.

Sister Laurette Betz, a Chicago native, was a nurse, administrator and hospital chaplain. She volunteers and serves as a minister of prayer for the West Midwest Community in Chicago.

Sister Rosemary Connelly worked in education, as a psychiatric social worker and as an administrator. She served at St. Patrick Academy; St. Paul of the Cross, Park Ridge; St. James; St. Stephen; Queen of Heaven; Mother McAuley High School; Precious Blood; and as executive director of Misericordia Home South; and in Aurora, Illinois. In 1976 she became the executive director of Misericordia North, Heart of Mercy Center and still maintains that ministry.

Sister Mary E. Loftus, a Chicago native, was a teacher, principal, director of religious education, pastoral associate, congregational leader and pastoral minister. Sister Jo Ann Simanella taught elementary grades, served as a school principal, was a pastoral associate and an outpatient representative and served on her St. Louis Provincial leadership team. She served for about 18 years at Divine Providence School, Westchester; in Missouri; and at a Kinderheim in Oberursel, Germany, where her community was founded. She now does funeral ministry at St. Ferdinand Parish, Florissant, Missouri, and works part-time at a funeral home, meeting with families who have lost a loved one to plan the funeral liturgy.

Sister Ellen (Michael Aquinas) Cunningham, a Chicago native from St. Luke Parish, River Forest, taught high school level and was a professor at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College for about 30 years, and did computer programming for McCord and Associates. She is a volunteer in the Institutional Advancement Office at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.

Sister Paula (Marie Pauline) Modaff, an Oak Park native, was a teacher and canon lawyer. She served at Mother Theodore Guerin High School, River Grove. She is an auditor for the marriage tribunal in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and a spiritual companion in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana.

Sister Therese Guerin Sullivan was a teacher, principal and tribunal judge. She served at St. Andrew, St. Thaddeus, St. Angela and St. Mary Magdalen. She is a canonical consultant in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

Sister Carolyn Marie Minert, from St. Rita Parish, was an occupational therapist and administrator. She served at Resurrection Nursing Pavilion, Resurrection Medical Center and in Montgomery, Alabama. She now ministers in prayer and presence.

Sister Mary Martin Colbert, a Chicago native, was a principal and director of formation. She served at St. Ambrose; St. Michael Central High School; Cardinal Stritch High School; and St. Benedict School, Blue Island; did adult education at St. Helena of the Cross; and ministered in Wisconsin, Minnesota and in Kenya and Nigeria. Sister Joan Marie Curtin, a Chicago native, was teacher and administrator and ministered to the deaf. She served at Little Company of Mary Hospital, Evergreen Park, and in Minnesota and Ohio. She does prayer and presence.

Sister Jean Phelan, a Chicago native, was an educator, pastoral minister and community leader. She served at St. Alphonsus; Academy of Our Lady; St. Bernardine Parish, Forest Park; Queen of Martyrs, Evergreen Park; in Peoria, Illinois; and in Wisconsin. She does prayer and presence.

Sister Rose Cecile Espinos worked in education, administration, SSND formation and leadership and ministry in the Hispanic community. She served at St. Margaret of Scotland; at Santa Maria Addolorata; as an English-as-a-second-language teacher; at Casa Jesus; at the Women’s Learning Center; at Corazon a Corazon; in Hinsdale and Joliet, Illinois; and in Texas, Missouri, Guatemala, Paraguay and Brazil. Brother Raymond Albers was a missionary in Ghana, pastoral minister, director of brother formation, educator and substance abuse counselor. He also ministered in gerontology and contemporary spirituality and art, specializing in stained-glass windows. He served at St. Anselm; at the Society of the Divine Word, Techny; as a principal and missionary in Ghana; and did pastoral care in Mexico. He is retired at the Divine Word Residence, Techny.

Father Arnold Steffen worked in pastoral ministry, administration and as a missionary in Papua New Guinea for 59 years, establishing a mission that served people in a 500-square-mile area with 45 stations. He also was a pastor of the Kumdi Mission there, president of the Holy Spirit Seminary and provincial superior of the New Guinea Province. He is retired at the Divine Word Residence, Techny.

Father Richard Thibeau worked in education, African-American ministry, pastoral care, administration and as a missionary. He served in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York and provided pastoral care and built parishes in Cuernavaca, Mexico, and cared for the Zapotecas people in Oaxaca, Mexico. He is retired at the Divine Word Residence, Techny.

Father Francis Drzaic was a missionary in Paraguay and did pastoral ministry in the U.S. He was the associate pastor at Holy Trinity Croatian Parish, St. Bronislava and Our Lady of Charity; did pastoral care at Oak Park Hospital, Oak Park; and served in Tennessee, California, Texas and Mississippi.

Father William Halvey graduated from St. Mel High School, joined the Army and spent one year with the occupation troops in Japan. He returned to the U.S., enrolled in Loras College for two years and then entered the Society of the Divine Word. He worked in pastoral ministry, administration and as a chaplain and missionary. He served as the U.S. Post Office postmaster at Techny; ministered in Mississippi, New Jersey, and Wyoming and in Papua New Guinea for 26 years, first as a brother, then as a priest, teacher, pastor and retreat center director. He is retired at the Divine Word Residence, Techny.

Brother Joachim Brignac worked in building and maintenance. He served at Divine Word Theologate and at Notre Dame in Martinsville, Louisiana. He is retired at the Divine Word Residence, Techny.

Father James Henry was a pastoral minister, teacher and missionary in Papua New Guinea, where he worked for 12 years. He served as a U.S. Navy chaplain and in California. He is retired at the Divine Word Residence, Techny.

Father Gerhard Vogel worked in education, administration and pastoral care. He served in Mississippi, Ohio, New Jersey and in Canada. He now lives at the Divine Word Residence, Techny.

Father Walter Miller was a missionary in Colombia, did Hispanic ministry and was a chaplain, educator, vocation minister and formator. He served as chaplain at Techny Towers Conference and Retreat Center, in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California and in Bogota, Colombia. He is the vice rector of the Divine Word Residence, Techny.

Father David Streit, from St. Gregory Parish, worked in education, international administration and pastoral care. He served as assistant secretary general of the Society of the Divine Word in Rome for 23 years; in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Canada and St. Kitts. He is retired at the Divine Word Residence, Techny.

Father Roger Schroeder has worked in education, was a missionary in Papua New Guinea and is the author, co-author or editor of six books. He is a recognized expert in missiology and serves as an international coordinator of the Anthropos Institute and professor of intercultural studies and ministry at Catholic Theological Union. He lives at Divine Word Theologate.

Father Carlos Paniagua-Monroy has been a missionary in Brazil, done Hispanic and pastoral ministry, worked as a writer and editor and as chaplain. He served as a transitional deacon at St. Cecilia, Mount Prospect; as a writer/editor for Ethnic Communications Outlet; and has ministered in New Jersey and Tennessee. He has been chaplain at Techny Towers Conference and Retreat Center since 2012.

Father Joseph Hemmer was a teacher, acting principal, pastor and campus minister. He served at Corpus Christi High School and Hales Franciscan High School as well as St. Joseph Friary in Hyde Park. He is pastor of St. Teresa in Kaltag and St. Peter-in-Chains in Ruby, Alaska.

60 years

Father Mario DiCicco has been an associate pastor, principal and high school president, adjunct faculty member, preacher and fundraiser. He served at St. Peter’s in the Loop, Lesser Brothers, Hales Franciscan High School and the Lutheran School of Theology; did itinerant preaching; was a fundraising consultant for the General Curia; was director of development and interim president, Quincy University, Quincy, Illinois; was interim director of post-novitiate formation at St. Joseph Friary; and was director of programs and associate pastor of St. Peter’s in the Loop. He has been a confessor and development coordinator since 2012 and executive assistant to the minister general of development and fundraising since 2014. He is at St. Peter Friary.

Father Wenceslaus Church was an instructor, associate pastor and chaplain. He served at Corpus Christi High School, Holy Spirit and Hales Franciscan High School and St. Peter’s in the Loop, where he has been a confessor since 1991. He is at St. Peter Friary.

Father Michael Fowler was a pastor, associate pastor, administrator, parochial vicar, associate and director of the Franciscan Vocation Center and the friar liaison for the Franciscan Volunteer program. He served at San Damiano, Cicero; Franciscan Vocation Center; St. Joseph Church; St. Joseph Friary; and as the associate director of interprovincial post-novitiate formation. He is pastor of St. Anthony Parish, St. Louis.

Father Ralph Parthie did parish work; was an assistant novice master; was director of formation; ministered to people with HIV and AIDS; was chaplain and vice president for mission effectiveness at Quincy University, Quincy, Illinois; was co-director and director of the novitiate program; and was a confessor at St. Peter’s in the Loop. He is director of the Office of Friar Life and secretary of formation and studies at St. Anthony Friary, St. Louis.

Father James F. Fanale worked in secondary and college education, community and parish ministry and as his community’s archivist and historian. He served at DePaul University as a professor; the Clerics of St. Viator-Province of Chicago, Arlington Heights; and in Kankakee, Champaign and St. Anne, Illinois, where he is the pastor at St. Anne Church.

Father Thomas E. Long ministered in secondary education, parish ministry, social work and community administration. He served as parochial vicar at St. Viator Parish and the Clerics of St. Viator-Province of Chicago, Arlington Heights, where he has been the coordinator of the Viatorian Development Office since 2003. He also served in Kankakee and Rock Island, Illinois.
