Hope, the virtue that astonishes even God
Every Advent, a beautiful poem by the French writer Charles Péguy, comes to mind as I reflect on the gift of hope. He wrote “On the Portico of the Mystery of Hope” from his own experience, and it offers some beautiful insights on the relationship between the virtues of faith, hope and love.

The end of the Invest in Kids Act?
The Illinois legislature abandoned nearly 10,000 children attending Catholic and other non-public schools Nov. 9 by failing to renew the Invest in Kids scholarship program. Since 2017, Invest in Kids has empowered low-income families to choose the school that best meets their child’s needs, providing them the same options more affluent families have.

Our planet is ‘nearing a breaking point’
This fall, the Holy Father issued another stern warning about the serious threat of climate change in his letter “Laudate Deum.”

Grieving the loss of Bishop Kevin Birmingham
The sudden passing of Bishop Kevin Birmingham shocked us all. Please find here my closing remarks at the Mass of Christian Burial, which took place on his 52nd birthday, Oct. 7. May he rest in peace.

The development of doctrine is the tradition
One of the many blessings of the Second Vatican Council is its affirmation that the doctrine of the church develops. From the days of the apostles, the bishops wrote in “Dei Verbum,” Christians have been exhorted to “hold fast to the traditions which they have learned either by word of mouth or by letter (see 2 Thes 2:15), and to fight in defense of the faith handed on once and for all (see Jude 1:3).”

‘Synodality’: A new word for an ancient reality
Pope Francis has insisted that for the church to be true to itself, we must act in a more synodal way. This is in keeping with the vision of renewal promoted in the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, which stressed the common dignity and mission of all the baptized for understanding the mystery and mission of the church.

Faith is about the Lord’s presence
Last weekend I returned to my home parish in South Omaha, Sts. Peter and Paul, to gather with family and friends to mark the 100th anniversary of my father’s birth, Aug. 12, 1923. He was born on a Sunday and three weeks later, on Sept. 2, 1923, was baptized in the font that still stands in the church, the font in which my mother, my siblings and I were baptized.

Sharing the journey
The Second Vatican Council recovered the ancient understanding of the church as a pilgrim people. It is a notion that has deep roots in our tradition, particularly when we consider that before the term “Christianity” was coined, the disciples of Jesus spoke of themselves as belonging to “the Way.”

Welcome back, Parliament of the World’s Religions
With great joy, I welcome the thousands of people representing more than 80 nations who will gather in Chicago Aug. 13-18 for the Parliament of the World’s Religions. My first experience with the parliament came when I traveled to Toronto to deliver a plenary address at the 2018 convening. There I saw firsthand the diversity and vitality found at this largest worldwide gathering dedicated to cultivating harmony among the world’s religious and spiritual communities.

Ukraine: the right to exist
Over the last two weeks of June, I visited Poland and Ukraine to meet with Ukrainian refugees who fled their country after the Russian invasion that began in February 2022. It was an experience I’ll never forget.
