Survivors first
Following the release of the report of Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul on the sexual abuse of minors by clerics in the six dioceses of our state, my office offered an initial response which can be found at archchicago.org/statements.

The starting point of Gospel ministry
The Gospels repeatedly remind us that Jesus always put the needs and sufferings of others before all else. In the parable of the good Samaritan, the Lord makes clear that the moral question before us as we confront the world’s sufferings is not, “Who is my neighbor?” — as if we can pick and choose whom we help. Rather, it is, “What does it mean for me to be neighbor to one in need?”

Chicago priests making a difference
This month the Archdiocese of Chicago will ordain five new priests. I always urge the newly ordained to keep in mind that in receiving ordination they are entering into the presbyterate of Chicago, a body of priests that has a long history of making a difference in the church and the world.

Educating children: parents’ primary right
In his apostolic exhortation “Amoris Laetitia,” Pope Francis reminds us that “the overall education of children is a ‘most serious duty’ and at the same time a ‘primary right’ of parents.” He goes on to write that even though the state offers education, it does so in a subsidiary way, for parents have an “inalienable right … to choose freely the kind of education … which they wish to give their children in accordance with their convictions” (84).

Holy Week: A time to remember who we are
It is striking that just as the early church referred to Jesus as the Messiah with the word “Christ,” they claimed that they too were anointed, by referring to themselves as Christians (Acts 11:26). The point is clear. Integral to the disciples’ core belief that Jesus is the promised Messiah, the Christ, anointed to bring salvation to the world, is their claim that he has anointed them to be partners in this redeeming work.

‘There is nothing new under the sun’
That Scripture verse from the Book of Ecclesiastes (1:19) comes to mind as I reflect on the agitation expressed by some in the church and the media over the Holy Father’s “motu proprio” “Traditionis Custodes” and the recent confirmation given in the “Rescriptum ex Audientia” released by Cardinal Arthur Roche, prefect of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments.

Lent: A spiritual springtime
A bishop recently recounted for me a humorous incident that occurred during a Mass he had celebrated. When it came time for the washing of the hands during the preparation of gifts, the altar server informed the bishop that the sacristan had failed to put out the bowl of water and towel.

A church called to love perfectly
Among the many points of convergence between the late Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis is their emphasis on the power of grace, which is God’s love for his people. From different perspectives, both popes insist that this love is totally unconditional, mysterious, transformative and gratuitous.

The approach of Catholic Schools Week gives us an opportunity to revisit the efforts the Archdiocese of Chicago has been taking to keep our children safe.
