The astounding truth of God’s love
Cardinal Cupich delivered the following homily at Holy Name Cathedral on Nov. 24 on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of Holy Name Parish:

A decade of blessings
Ten years ago, when I began my ministry as your archbishop, I called on the image of God working in the midst of dry bones, as the prophet Ezekiel reminded us. In this passage, God brings the prophet through the skeletal remains of his people, asking whether these bones can live. The Lord then has Ezekial command the bones to hear God’s word — and they rattle back to life.

The most decisive question: Do I have a heart?
Pope Francis has written a singularly important encyclical on the human and divine love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, “Dilexit Nos” (“He loved us”). He offers a path to respond to God’s invitation in our often loveless world to bring love forward. As an introduction to the encyclical, I want to draw attention to his reflections on the human heart, what it means and what it can do.

Synodality and ‘relationship conversion’
It is not surprising to read commentaries on the present synod on synodality that express perplexity about what synodality means for the church. Admittedly, “synodality” is not a familiar term.

Pope Francis on interreligious dialogue
During his apostolic journey to Asia and Oceania, Pope Francis held a session in Singapore with a group of young people on the subject of interreligious dialogue. During that event, the pope observed: “One of the things that has impressed me most about the young people here is your capacity for interfaith dialogue.” Then he posed the question, What if this dialogue begins “by arguing, ‘My religion is more important than yours ...,’ or ‘Mine is the true one, yours is not true ...,’ where does this lead?”

A time to mature
I recently had a conversation with a father who shared with me the delight he and his wife have taken in seeing their son mature in his relationship with them. As one would expect, the son from his earliest days related to his parents as providers. After all, they worked hard to provide food, shelter, clothing, health care, education, recreation and so much more that allowed the son to grow. The father quipped that during the son’s teenage years, he and his wife felt like nothing so much as an ATM card!

Charting a new course: connecting with one another
Sympathy is what we offer to people in moments of suffering. It lets people know that we are with them in the trials they face. Yet, sympathy can have a short shelf life. We return to our lives having satisfied our desire to visit someone in need, but we can go back to our routine not really affected by the visit.

When Catholics vote
As the United States celebrates its 248th birthday and we prepare to elect leaders this fall, it is timely to consider how we as a community of believers should envision our contribution to the common good. This is particularly relevant, given that in this moment of bitter political divisions, we see the emergence of groups pretending to speak on behalf of all Catholics by offering a very narrow version of our teachings, often reducing it for their own partisan aims.

The goal of the Eucharistic Revival
In preparation for the National Eucharistic Congress this coming July, thousands of pilgrims are making their way to Indianapolis from various parts of the United States. Happily, the pilgrimage will include stops in the Archdiocese of Chicago, culminating with the celebration of the Eucharist at Holy Name Cathedral on June 30 at 12:30 p.m.
