Anonymous blessing
At a desert monastery, I had the opportunity to walk a labyrinth made of stones surrounded by exotic flora. I was completely alone, but far from lonely, enchanted by the mysterious beauty and contradiction of uninviting, captivating cacti amidst the craggy landscape. With each step closer to the center, I offered the prayer I have prayed daily.

In candor and charity
I have always loved our church’s sense of liturgical proportion: 40 days of Lent followed by 50 days of joyful celebration constituting the Easter season.

The healing mandate of the Gospel
Being married to an infectious disease specialist and global epidemiologist meant my experience of lockdown was a full immersion into the intricacies of COVID-19. It’s been a long two years, but thanks to my daily conversation partner I have learned a lot about science, disease, transmission, vaccinations, and healthcare. Thank you, U.S. Postal Service!

Advent had been full of lengthy discussions during which their innately inquisitive selves delved ever more deeply into the practicalities of Santa Claus and his primary, global responsibility.

Women must be at tables where church decisions are made
The Catholic Church is the largest global humanitarian network, with enormous potential, and therefore responsibility, to address human suffering and complex global challenges. It is also the vehicle through which the Catholic faith is transmitted to nearly 1.3 billion people.

The audacious gift of being Catholic
Years ago, Mercy Sister Margaret Farley, my professor and spiritual director, asked something I have never forgotten: “What is it you most love about being Catholic?”

Recovery and reform in the church
Responding to the sexual abuse crisis and advocating for the role of lay leadership, and, frankly, especially women in the church has been a central component of my work on behalf of the church all of my adult life.

Love doesn’t end with death
My closest friend and colleague for more than 20 years, Father Bob Beloin, the Catholic chaplain at Yale University, died recently of glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.
