Archdiocese ordains 15 permanent deacons
Fifteen permanent and two transitional deacons were ordained May 10, 2025, at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 N. State St. Bishop Lawence Sullivan, vicar general for the Archdiocese of Chicago, was the main celebrant at the ordination and offered the homily. The newly ordained deacons will assist the bishop and his priests in ministries of the Word, Liturgy and Charity. These include proclaiming the Gospel, leading intercessions, preaching, preparing the altar, celebrating baptisms, leading the faithful in prayer, distributing holy communion, witnessing marriages, and conducting wake and funeral services. Deacons also identify the needs of the poor and underserved, and shepherd the Church's resources to meet them. (Karen Callaway and Deacon Randy Belice/Chicago Catholic)

Thousands of Catholics celebrate election of Pope Leo XIV at Rate Field
The Archdiocese of Chicago hosts a historic, citywide celebration on June 14, 2025, honoring Pope Leo XIV at Rate Field, home ballpark of the Chicago White Sox. Cardinal Cupich was the main celebrant for the Mass. A program before the Mass featured performances from Leo High School's choir and an appearance of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Academy students who were part of a mock conclave that went viral on social media. Pope Leo addressed participants, and young people in particular, during a recorded video message.

Two men ordained priests for archdiocese
Bishop Lawrence Sullivan, vicar general of the Archdiocese of Chicago, ordained two priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago on May 17, 2025, at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 N. State St. Father Cristian Garcia, 33, from Chicago, is now serving at St. Clare of Assisi Parish in Rolling Meadows and Mount Prospect. Father Kevin Menard, 37, from Arlington Heights, is serving at St. John Cantius Parish in Chicago. Men become priests through the Sacrament of Holy Orders, a celebration rich in symbolism and tradition. By ordination, priests receive a wide variety of responsibilities, particularly celebrating the Mass and granting forgiveness of sins through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Priests also preach the Gospel, and celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Matrimony, and Anointing of the Sick. Diocesan priests make promises of life-long celibacy, prayer for the People of God, and obedience to their bishop at their ordination. It is also expected that priests will lead a life of simplicity consistent with the people they serve. (Karen Callaway and Deacon Randy Belice/Chicago Catholic)
