The National Honor Society (NHS) announced that Rosa Mendoza, a high school senior at St. Francis de Sales High School and member of the NHS, has been selected as an NHS Scholarship semifinalist.

Mendoza was chosen from nearly 7,000 applicants and will receive a $3,200 scholarship toward higher education.

For nearly 100 years, NHS members have been making a difference in their schools and communities and the NHS Scholarship is NASSP’s way of recognizing the most exceptional of these student leaders. Recipients are chosen based on their demonstrated work to support the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

“I can think of no recipient more deserving than Rosa. The only thing more stellar than her academic performance is the strength of her character. She represents the very best of what we hope for from our students at St. Francis de Sales,” says principal, John Kimec.

At St. Francis de Sales High School, Mendoza has served as the captain of the Girls Varsity Soccer team, captain of the Varsity Volleyball team, and as an elected officer of the Student Council. Mendoza is also a member of the school’s choir and serves as an altar server at St. Francis de Sales Church.

This fall, she plans on attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to major in Biochemistry and minor in Spanish. Her ultimate goal is to go to med school to be a gynecologist.
