Every year we honor the men celebrating jubilees who have dedicated themselves to serving the Lord through the Catholic Church. They often wear many hats, such as administrator, maintenance man, cook, accountant, friend. They have served mostly as parish priests, with some also serving as teachers, chaplains and counselors. The Catholic New World congratulates and thanks them.

50th Anniversary

Father John Hergenrother

Father John Hergenrother

Father John Hergenrother, 76, was born in Chicago and attended St. Laurence School, Quigley Preparatory Seminary and St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.

He was associate pastor at Immaculate Heart of Mary (1966-1972) and St. Ferdinand (1972-1976); resident at Immaculate Heart of Mary (1976-1978), St. Monica (1978- 1982), St. Bridget (1982-1985), Our Lady of Mount Carmel (1998-2000) and St. Ladislaus (2000-2005); and pastor at St. Louise de Marillac, LaGrange Park (1985- 1997).

He served as vice-chancellor and chancellor (1975- 1985), auditor and defender of the bond in the marriage tribunal (1975-1980); and a judge in the tribunal (1980- 1985, 1997-present).

 

Father William Moriarty

Father William Moriarty

Father William Moriarty, 75, was born in Chicago and attended St. Philip Neri School, Quigley Preparatory Seminary and St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary. He also earned a master’s degree in religious education from Loyola University Chicago.

He served as associate pastor at St. Thomas More (1966-1970); was a resident St. Nicholas, Evanston (1970-1976); and was associate pastor at St. Hubert, Hoffman Estates (1976-1982); and St. Linus, Oak Lawn (1982-1985). He was pastor of St. John the Evangelist, Streamwood (1985-1992). He has been a resident at St. Athanasius, Evanston (1993-1994) and Holy Name Cathedral (1992-present). He served as chaplain at Northwestern University (1997-2016) and has been a member of the National Catholic Chaplains Association (1997-2016).

 

Father John Price

Father John Price

Father John Price, 75, was born in Chicago. He was associate pastor at St. Celestine, Elmwood Park (1966- 1972); St. Peter, Skokie (1972-1974); and St. Hubert, Hoffman Estates (1980-1985). He was pastor of Mary, Queen of Heaven, Cicero (1985-1997). He was associate pastor and then administrator at St. Eulalia, Maywood (1997- 1998), administrator at Our Lady of Victory (1998-1999); associate pastor at St. Ann, Lansing (1999-2001) and administrator at St. Gerard Majella, Markham (2001).

 

Father Gerald Rogala

Father Gerald Rogala

Father Gerald Rogala, 75, was born in Waukegan and attended Holy Rosary School, North Chicago, Quigley Preparatory Seminary and St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary. He also earned a master’s degree in New Testament studies at the University of Chicago.

He was associate pastor at St. John Brebeuf, Niles (1966-1969); a lecturer in theology and formation at Niles College Seminary (1969-1974); associate pastor at St. John Berchmans (1974-1976); pastor of St. Josaphat (1976-1987) and St. Thecla (1987-2000); associate pastor at St. Mary, Buffalo Grove (2000-2003); and pastor of Our Lady of the Brook, Northbrook (2003-2004) and St. Stephen Protomartyr, Des Plaines (2005-2010).

Father Charles Rubey

Father Charles Rubey

Father Charles Rubey, 76, was born in Des Plaines and attended St. Mary School, Quigley Preparatory Seminary and St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary. He also earned a master’s degree in social work from Loyola University Chicago.

He was associate pastor at Little Flower Parish (1966-1972). He has worked at Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago since 1972 as a department director, senior administrator and founder and director of Loving Outreach to Survivors of Suicide. He also was vicar for senior priests for three years and on the archdiocesan professional review board for nine years.

Father Ronald Scarlata

Father Ronald Scarlata

Father Ronald Scarlata, 77, was born in Chicago and attended All Saints School, St. Ignatius High School, Quigley Preparatory Seminary and St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.

He was associate pastor at St. John Bosco (1966-1971); St. William (1975); St. Bernadette, Evergreen Park (1975-1977); Divine Savior, Westchester (1977-1983); and Queen of the Rosary, Elk Grove Village (1983). He was pastor at Immaculate Conception (31st Street) (1984-1989) and then at St. James, Highwood (1989-1997). He also worked in the marriage tribunal and has been a commander of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre since 1988.

He retired for health reasons but continues to provide weekend help at several parishes, including Our Lady of Angels in Joliet, Illinois. He is chaplain at the motherhouse of the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart in Frankfort, Illinois.

Father Charles Schlax

Father Charles Schlax

Father Charles Schlax, 75, was born in Laona, Wisconsin, and attended Our Lady of Victory School, Quigley Preparatory Seminary and St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.

He served as associate pastor at Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of Knock, Calumet City; as associate and pastor of Ascension-St. Susanna, Harvey, and as associate pastor of St. Theresa, Palatine, and St. Mary, Des Plaines.

He also served as chaplain for the fire departments in Harvey, Des Plaines and Glenview and as a part-time hospital chaplain at Ravenswood, St. Margaret, Ingalls, Northwest Community, Lutheran General and Holy Family hospitals.

He served as chaplain at Presence Nazarethville (2010- 2014) and now is a resident and sacramental minister at Nazarethville.

Bishop Edward Slattery

Bishop Edward Slattery

Bishop Edward Slattery, 75, was born in Chicago and attended Visitation School, Quigley Preparatory Seminary and St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary. He also earned a master’s degree in education from Loyola University Chicago.

He was associate pastor at St. Jude the Apostle, South Holland (1966-1971), and associate pastor (1973-1976) and pastor (1976-1991) of St. Rose of Lima. He resided at Holy Name Cathedral (1991- 1994). He also was vice president (1971-1976) and president (1976-1994) of the Catholic Extension Society.

He has been bishop of the Diocese of Tulsa, Oklahoma, since 1994.

Father John Tilford

Father John Tilford

Father John Tilford, 75, was born in Chicago and attended St. Laurence High School, the Catholic University of Puerto Rico, the University of Illinois at Chicago and St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary. He also earned a master’s in social work from Loyola University Chicago.

He was associate pastor at St. Thomas of Canterbury (1966-1971); assistant executive director at Angel Guardian (1971-1979); associate pastor at St. Maria Goretti, Schiller Park (1979-1983); assistant executive director of Maryville Academy, Des Plaines (1983-1990); and pastor of St. Bridget (1990-2000) and St. Michael the Archangel (2000-2014).

He also was the archdiocesan pilgrimage director and chaplain at Notre Dame High School, Niles.

Father Norman Trela

Father Norman Trela

Father Norman Trela, 75, was born in Chicago and attended St. Ann School (18th and Leavitt streets), Quigley Preparatory Seminary and St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.

He served as associate pastor at St. Edward (1966-1975); St. Bruno (1975-1982); St. Albert the Great, Burbank: St. Turibius (1987-1992); St. Barbara, Brookfield (1992- 1997); St. Symphorosa (1997-2004, 2005-2016); and St. Gerald (2004-2005).

He also has been a chaplain for the Chicago, Brookfield and Midlothian fire departments and St. Laurence High School.

Father Thomas Vitro

Father Thomas Vitro, 75, was born in Chicago and attended St. Joseph and St. Ann School, Quigley Preparatory Seminary and St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.

He was associate pastor at St. Giles, Oak Park (1966-1973); St. Julian Eymard, Elk Grove Village (1973-1978); St. Edmund, Oak Park (1978-1981) and St. Joseph, Libertyville (1992-1993).

Father Leroy Wickowski

Father Leroy Wickowski

Father Leroy Wickowski, 76, was born in Chicago and attended Ss. Peter and Paul School, Quigley Preparatory Seminary and St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.

He was associate pastor at St. Tarcissus (1966-1975) and Holy Name Cathedral (1975- 1988) before being named pastor at St. Robert Bellarmine (1988-1994). He was chaplain at Holy Family Villa, Palos Park (1994-1996) and associate pastor at St. Giles, Oak Park (1996-2005) and St. Luke, River Forest (2005-2010). He has resided at St. Luke since his retirement in 2010.

He also served as director of the archdiocesan Office for Hospitals (1978-1988).

25th Anniversary

Father Andrzej Bartosz

Father Andrzej Bartosz

Father Andrzej Bartosz, 50, was born in Poznan, Poland. He was educated there and was ordained for the Archdiocese of Poznan. He ministered in Poland until 2000.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, he served as associate pastor at St. Richard (2000-2001); St. Thecla (2001-2007); St. Germaine, Oak Lawn (2007-2009) and St. Ladislaus (2009-2012). He has served as pastor of Our Lady, Mother of the Church since 2012.

He will celebrate his anniversary May 15 at 11 a.m. Mass at Our Lady, Mother of the Church, 8747 W. Lawrence Ave.

Father Antoni Bury

Father Antoni Bury

Father Antoni Bury, 50, was born, raised and educated in Poland. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, he was associate pastor and administrator at St. Bruno (2000-2006) and St. Symphorosa (2006-2009). He was incardinated into the Archdiocese of Chicago in 2008 and has been pastor of St. Bruno, 4751 S. Harding Ave., since 2009.

Father John Dearhammer

Father John Dearhammer, 50, was born in Chicago and attended St. Pascal School, St. Patrick High School, Niles College Seminary and University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.

He was associate pastor at St. Maurice (1991-1997), associate vocation director (1997-1999) and pastor of St. Gall (1999-2009) and Church of the Holy Spirit, Schaumburg (2009-present).

Father Lawrence Dowling

Father Lawrence Dowling

Father Lawrence Dowling, 63, was born in Effingham, Illinois. He attended St. Mary School and Paris High School in Paris, Illinois, and Eastern Illinois University, where he earned a master’s degree in mathematics, before entering the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.

He served as associate pastor at St. James, Arlington Heights (1991-1996) and as pastor at St. Denis (1998- 2006) and St. Agatha (2007-present).

He serves or has served on the College of Consultors, the Archdiocesan Review Board, the Healing Garden Committee, as a dean, on the Presbyteral Council and the Archdiocesan School Board; as moderator of the Priests for Justice for Immigrants, on the archdiocesan Anti- Racism Committee, as a member of the Augustus Tolton Pastoral Ministry Board and on the advisory board for the Office of Immigrant Affairs and Immigration Education.

He will celebrate his anniversary with a May 21 fundraising dinner for St. Agatha Parish at Regency Inn Banquets, 5319 W. Diversey Ave., and a Mass of Thanksgiving June 26 at 10:30 a.m. on Douglas Boulevard, across from the church at 3151 W. Douglas Boulevard.

Father Mark Krylowicz

Father Mark Krylowicz

Father Mark Krylowicz, 55, was born in Chicago and attended Ss. Peter and Paul School; Eisenhower High School, Blue Island; Illinois State University; and University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.

He was associate pastor at St. Gregory the Great (1991-1997) and Our Lady of Tepeyac (1997-2002) and pastor of Holy Rosary (2005-2008) and St. Anthony of Padua (2005-present). He was on special assignment in the Diocese of Salt Lake City (2002-2005).

Father Stanislaw Kuca

Father Stanislaw Kuca

Father Stanislaw Kuca, 51, was born in Zlotoryja, Poland, and educated and ordained in Poland. His began his ministry in the Archdiocese of Wroclaw. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, he has served as associate pastor at Holy Innocents (2003-2006); St. Andrew (2006-2008); St. Francis Xavier, LaGrange (2008-2010); and St. Elizabeth Seton, Orland Hills (2010-2015). He is pastor at St. Bernardine, Forest Park (2015-present). He was incardinated in the Archdiocese of Chicago in 2010.

Msgr. Dennis Lyle

Msgr. Dennis Lyle

Msgr. Dennis Lyle, 50, was born in Evergreen Park and attended St. Nicholas of Tolentine School, Quigley South, Niles College Seminary and the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary. He has a licentiate in scared theology from Mundelein and a doctorate in sacred theology from the Academia Alfonsiana in Rome.

He was associate pastor at St. Joseph and St. Bartholomew, Waukegan (1991-1994). He was on the faculty of St. Joseph College Seminary (1994-1997) and Mundelein Seminary (2000-2006) before becoming rector/ president of Mundelein (2006-2012). He was director of Cardinal Stritch Retreat House (2012-2015) and now is vicar for priests (2015-present).

Father John McGivern

Father John McGivern

Father John McGivern, 57, was born in Chicago and attended St. Bernadette School and Evergreen Park High School. He earned bachelor’s degrees in sociology and journalism at the University of Iowa before entering the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.

He was a weekend resident at St. Josaphat (1991-1992) and associate pastor at St. Clement (1992-1998) and St. John of the Cross, Western Springs (1998-2004). He has been pastor of St. Edmund, Oak Park, since 2004.

Father McGivern works with Project Rachel and has served on the priest advisory board for the Office of Catholic Schools, the Presbyteral Council and the In- Search team for the Vocation Office.

He will celebrate his anniversary Sept. 25 at the 11 a.m. Mass at St. Edmund.

Father Peter McQuinn

Father Peter McQuinn

Father Peter McQuinn, 51, was born in Chicago and attended St. William School and St. Celestine School, Elmwood Park; Holy Cross High School; Niles College Seminary and University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.

He was associate pastor and administrator of St. Mark; pastor of Epiphany (1997-2007) and Our Lady of Lourdes (2007-2008); resident at St. Thomas Becket, Mount Prospect (2008-2010); Our Lady of the Wayside, Arlington Heights (2010-2014); and pastor of All Saints-St. Anthony (2014-present).

He will celebrate his anniversary May 22 at 11 a.m. Mass at All Saints-St. Anthony, 518 W. 28th Place.

Father Edward Panek

Father Edward Panek

Father Edward Panek, 51, was born in Chicago and attended Five Holy Martyrs School, Quigley South; Niles College Seminary and University of St. Mary of the Lake/ Mundelein Seminary.

He was associate pastor at St. Monica (1991-1997, 2001- 2004); on the faculty at Quigley Preparatory Seminary (1997-1999); a resident at St. Barbara (Throop St.) (2000-2001); pastor of St. Thomas Becket, Mount Prospect (2004-2015), and administrator at St. Raymond de Penafort, Mount Prospect (2015-present). He also has served as dean.

Father Dennis Stafford

Father Dennis Stafford

Father Dennis Stafford, 64, was born in Chicago and attended St. Peter Canisius and Immaculate Conception schools and St. Patrick High School. He earned a degree in business administration from Northern Illinois University and worked as a product manager, general manager and president of a marketing services firm and was married before entering the seminary.

He served as associate pastor at St. Anne, Barrington (1991-1996) and St. Mary of Vernon, Indian Creek (1996-1997), administrator at St. Dismas, Waukegan (1997) and resident at St. Denis (1998). He was administrator (1998) and then pastor of St. Emily, Mount Prospect (1999-2005). He resided at St. Raymond de Penafort, Mount Prospect (2006-2010) and Holy Cross, Deerfield (2010-2013) while serving as teacher and baseball coach at Montini High School, Lombard (2006-2007) and director of diaconate formation at the University of St. Mary of the Lake (2007-2013).

He was pastor of St. John, Twin Lakes, and St. Alphonsus, New Munster, both in Wisconsin (2013- 2014) and associate pastor at St. Theresa, Palatine (2014-2016). He will become administrator of St. Catherine of Siena-St. Lucy, Oak Park, July 1.

Father Edward Stockus

Father Edward Stockus

Father Edward Stockus, 85, was born in Chicago and attended St. George School and St. Rita High School. He was educated at the University of Illinois, University of Dayton, the Illinois Institute of Technology and Loyola University and had a long career as a mechanical engineer. He was married and had three sons, and was ordained to the permanent diaconate in 1974.

After he was widowed, he entered the seminary at the Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wisconsin. He was associate pastor at Divine Providence, Westchester (1991-1994); pastor of St. Hugh, Lyons (1994-1995); and associate pastor at St. Germaine, Oak Lawn (1995-1999); and St. Catherine of Alexandria, Oak Lawn (1999-2001). He has been pastor emeritus at St. Hugh since 2001.

Father Zdzislaw Jason Torba

Father Zdzislaw Jason Torba

Father Zdzislaw Jason Torba, 51, was born in Nisko, Poland. He was educated in Poland and ordained for the Archdiocese of Lublin. He served in parishes there and as executive secretary of Caritas (Catholic Charities) in Lublin. He came to Chicago in 1998 and served as associate pastor at St. Constance (1998-2003) and St. Mary, Evanston (2003-2006). He has served as pastor of St. Ferdinand since 2006.

He will celebrate his anniversary May 22 at 10:15 a.m. Mass at St. Ferdinand, 5900 W. Barry Ave.

Father Michael Wanda

Father Michael Wanda, 54, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended Congress Park School, Brookfield, and Lyons Township High School, La- Grange, before entering Niles College Seminary and the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary. He was associate pastor at St. Gall (1991- 1996) and St. Louise de Marillac, LaGrange Park (1996-2003). He was chaplain at Midway Airport (2001-2003) and associate pastor at Mary Seat of Wisdom, Park Ridge (2003-2008). He has served as pastor of Divine Infant, Westchester, since 2008.

Father William Zimmer, 51, was born in Evanston and attended St. Peter School, Skokie; Niles West High School, Niles College and the University of St. Mary of the Lake/ Mundelein Seminary.

He was associate pastor at St. Mary of Vernon, Indian Creek (1991-1992); St. Nicholas of Tolentine (1992- 1998); St. Francis of Assisi/Our Lady of the Angels (1998-2000); St. Anthony Parish, Cicero (2000- 2003); and Good Shepherd (2003-2004). He was administrator of St. Mary of Celle, Berwyn (2004- 2005); a resident at Epiphany (2005-2006); associate pastor at St. Bruno (2006-2007); a resident at St. Roman (2007); and associate pastor at St. Francis of Assisi (Roosevelt Road) (2007). He began serving as an associate pastor in the Archdiocese of Guadalajara, Mexico in 2007, and has been a resident at St. Angela Parish since 2009.
