In a letter to the St. Elizabeth of the Trinity Parish community on June 14, Cardinal Cupich announced that he was reinstating Father Dan McCarthy to his position of pastor emeritius after the archdiocese’s Independent Review Board concluded there was insufficient reason to suspect he was guilty of allegations of child sexual abuse. The archdiocese received allegations of abuse against McCarthy in 2020. “This coming weekend, as we celebrate Father’s Day and honor all of those who have been fathers to us, I know that Father McCarthy will have a special place in your prayers and fond thoughts as you thank God for many gifts,” the cardinal wrote in the letter. “The Gospel next Sunday challenges us to not panic in the midst of storms, but to trust that Christ abides with us. Let us keep that in mind as we look back on how this past year has been a time of great trial for us all, and yet a time to deepen our faith in the Lord.”
