With this issue, Chicago Catholic salutes and thanks the religious men and women who have devoted their lives to serving the people of God.  In the following pages, we honor hundreds of teachers, nurses, chaplains and parish priests who have given anywhere from 25 to 85 years in service of the Lord. Through their ministry, these men and women religious have touched countless lives, bringing Jesus to each person they meet. Join us in offering them our gratitude.

Women religious

Benedictines of Duluth, Minnesota

75 years

Sister Melanie Gagne was a teacher, school administrator, pastoral minister, chaplain and sacristan. She taught at St. Timothy and in Arizona and Minnesota. She did pastoral care and was a volunteer at the Benedictine Health Center. She is retired at St. Scholastica Monastery, Duluth, Minnesota.

60 years

Sister Josine Krausnick was a teacher, school administrator and congregational leader. She served at St. Timothy and in Minnesota and Arizona and was sub-prioress of her community. She is retired at St. Scholastica Monastery, Duluth, Minnesota.

Sisters of St. Casimir

60 years

Sister Joyce Ann Dopkin worked in education and social service and as a missionary. She served at Sts. Peter and Paul, All Saints and Maria High School and ministered for more than 50 years in Argentina, where she still works.

50 years

Sister Margaret Zalot has been an educator and congregational leader. She served at Nativity BVM; Holy Cross; Maria High School; St. Norbert, Northbrook; and with the Sisters of St. Casimir, where she is general councilor and general secretary.

Cenacle Sisters

60 years

Sister Mary Sharon Riley was a spiritual director, did retreat ministry and was a congregation administrator. She served at Chicago’s Longwood Cenacle as coordinator of the retreat team, general councilor in Rome and as provincial secretary and councilor for 10 years. She is retired.

Sister Ann C. Wylder was a spiritual director and did retreat ministry and congregation administration. She served at Chicago Longwood Cenacle as the director of the retreat office, was a superior/coordinator and provincial secretary. She is retired.

Daughters of Charity

75 years

Sister Mary Ann Wiltzius, from St. Angela Parish, worked in administration, teaching, counseling and social work. She served at Marillac Social Center and Our Lady of the Gardens. She now does ministry of prayer in Evansville, Indiana.

70 years

Sister Mary John Code has been a nurse and a nursing supervisor and worked in the geriatrics department at St. Joseph Hospital. She works with the Rebuild Center in New Orleans.

Sister Rosalie Digenan taught at St. Patrick Grade School (Adams Street). She does ministry of prayer in Evansville, Indiana.

Sister Patricia Elder was a nurse and midwife at St. Joseph Hospital. She does ministry of prayer in Evansville, Indiana.

60 years

Sister Sharon Hagen ministered in teaching and social work. She served at DePaul University and Marillac High School, Northfield. She now works as a counselor in Farmington Hills, Michigan.

Sister Teresita Heenan, from St. Sabina Parish, worked as an educator. She does ministry of prayer in Evansville, Indiana.

Sister Emile Morgan has been an educator and missionary. She served at Marillac High School, Northfield, and now does border outreach in El Paso, Texas.

Sister Helen Negri worked in child care and administration. She serves as board chair at Marillac/St. Vincent and in governance in St. Louis.

Sister Mary Satala, from St. Wenceslaus Parish, has ministered in nursing and social work and served at St. Joseph Hospital in mission services. She does ministry of prayer in Evansville, Indiana.

Sister Sharon Richardt has ministered in nursing, mission services and as a spiritual director. She served at St. Joseph Hospital as a coordinator of rehab, nursing and mission services. She is director of the Spiritual Care Center in Baltimore.

Sister Beth Marie Ruder was a social worker at the St. Vincent de Paul Center. She is a counselor in East St. Louis.

Adrian Dominicans

70 years

Sister Rita (Patrick Therese) Crotty, from St. Theodore Parish, spent more than 34 years ministering in elementary education in Illinois, including 25 years at St. Denis. She also served in Michigan. She now ministers in prayer and presence.

Sister Ellen (Esther Francis) Kennedy, from St. Laurence Parish, devoted 49 years of her religious life to education; was a remedial work coordinator and office worker; and served in lay formation ministry. She worked at Bishop Quarter Academy and in Chicago, Loves Park, Oak Park, Flossmoor, Westchester, Maywood, Cicero and River Grove and in Michigan, Iowa and Canada. She now does ministry of prayer and service to the community.

Sister Kieran Therese Quirke, from St. Columbanus Parish, was an educator. She served 46 years at schools in Chicago, Harvey, Elgin, Riverdale, Hometown and Burbank and in Michigan. She serves her community as a minister of prayer and presence.

60 years

Sister Anita (Jean Vincent) Chiappetta, from Our Lady of Peace Parish, worked in education and as a catechist/teacher trainer, business office manager, social work assistant and congregational administrator. She served at the Human Growth Center and was the executive secretary in Central Services, co-provincial of St. Catherine of Siena Province and now is administrative assistant for the Dominican Midwest Chapter Office, Chicago.

Sister Juliann (Jean Vincent) Flynn, from St. Kilian Parish, worked in education and religious education, campus ministry and young adult ministry and as a pastoral associate and human concerns coordinator. She served at Queen of Angels; St. Michael, Orland Park; St. Barnabas; Harper College, Palatine; St. Ann, Lansing; in Riverdale; and in Michigan and Florida. She is a minister of prayer and presence.

Dominican Sisters of Peace

60 years

Sister Lois McGovern was a teacher and ministered in formation and vocation ministry, social work and administration. She taught at schools in Chicago, Arlington Heights and Orland Park and served at the National Sisters Vocation Conference, Our Lady of Lourdes, Catholic Charities, on the Board of Chicago Catholic Women, at Dehon House Shelter for Homeless Families and the Elderly Housing Development and Operations Corporation. She now volunteers for senior citizen transport.

Sinsinawa Dominicans

75 years

Sister Marie Celeste Gatti was a teacher, administrator and congregational leader. She served at St. Brendan; St. Giles, Oak Park; Trinity High School, River Forest; in Freeport and Bloomington; and in Wisconsin, Florida and Washington. She is living in community at the Sinsinawa motherhouse in Wisconsin.

Sister Alfonso Glancey was a principal, school support staff member and a volunteer. She taught at St. Sabina and St. Brendan and in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Oklahoma. She is living in community at the Sinsinawa motherhouse in Wisconsin.

70 years

Sister Angela Donovan, from St. Gall Parish, worked in education, administration, congregational leadership and hospital chaplaincy. She served at Queen of Peace, Burbank; Trinity High School and Trinity Convent, River Forest; Divine Providence Convent, Des Plaines; at the Learning Center (Lawndale); and in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, New Jersey, Louisiana and Arizona. She is living in community at the Sinsinawa motherhouse in Wisconsin.

Sister Marya Dugard served in teaching, religious education and pastoral ministry and promoted a devotion to the rosary. She served at Visitation, St. Sabina, St. Barnabas, St. Basil and St. Mary, Evanston; in Kewanee, Peoria and Bloomington; and in Wyoming. She is living in community at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green, Wisconsin.

Sister Mary Jane Herlik worked in teaching, pastoral ministry administration and AIDS ministry. She served at Visitation and Trinity High School, River Forest; and in Texas, Tennessee, Georgia, Wisconsin, Mississippi and Florida. She is living in community in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Sister Margaret Mary “Meg” (Mary Loyola) Majewski, from St. John the Baptist Parish, was a teacher and campus minister. She served at St. Mary, Evanston; Morgan Park Academy; and Gage Park; and in Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, Alabama, Tennessee and at Port of Spain, Trinidad. She is living in community at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green, Wisconsin.

Sister Joan O’Shea, from Visitation Parish, was a teacher, pastoral minister, dean of students, promoter of mission integration and provincial leaders. She served at St. Barnabas; was part-time faculty member at Rosary College/Dominican University, River Forest; and ministered in New York and Wisconsin, where she now is living in community in Footville.

Sister Rosa Rauth, from Ascension Parish, Oak Park, taught music and math. She served in Bloomington and Rockford and in Wisconsin, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Minnesota. She is a volunteer organist, piano teacher and accompanist for the Sinsinawa Singing Seniors at the Sinsinawa motherhouse, Wisconsin.

Sister Suzanne Schuman, from St. Clare of Montefalco Parish, was a teacher and educational administrator. She served at St. Barnabas and in Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Alabama, California and Iowa. She is living in community in Oak Lawn.

Sister Mary Eileen (Mary Loyola) Scully, a Chicago native from St. Giles Parish, Oak Park, worked in teaching, student guidance, blind services and administration. She served at Trinity High School, Chicago, and Trinity High School, River Forest; at the Blind Service Association; with senior services for visually challenged people; and in Minnesota, Alabama and in Nebraska. She is living in community at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green, Wisconsin.

60 years

Sister Cecilia (Elianne) Davis worked in teaching and administration. She served at St. Vincent Ferrer, River Forest; St. Giles, Oak Park; St. Domitilla, Hillside; St. Eulalia, Maywood; Mary, Seat of Wisdom, Park Ridge; and in Wisconsin. She is living in community at the Sinsinawa motherhouse, Wisconsin.

Sister Rosemary “Robi” (Tobia) Huddleston, from St. John Fisher Parish, worked in teaching and preaching the Gospel. She has served in Illinois; Washington, D.C.; and Santa Cruz, Bolivia. She now lives in community in Milwaukee, where she volunteers with a variety of organizations committed to social justice.

Sister Maria del Rey Hunt did pastoral ministry, social work and chaplaincy. She served at two Pilsen mental health centers (now Pilsen Wellness Center); as a driver at Rosary College (now Dominican University), River Forest; and in Colorado, California and in Texas. She now is living in community at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green, Wisconsin.

Sister Bernadine (Marie Barbara) Karge, from Visitation Parish, has been a teacher and an immigration attorney. She served with the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Latin American Committee at Catholic Charities, Heartland Alliance and the Chicago Legal Clinic; was an adjunct professor at Loyola University Chicago and Catholic Theological Union; served the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation as promoter of peace and justice; and worked in Washington, D.C., and Trinidad and Tobago. She is retired and volunteers as an attorney with the Chicago Volunteer Legal Services and the Chicago Legal Clinic. She participated in Nuns on the Bus and is on the boards of Sisters and Brothers of Immigrants, Dominican University and Bethany House of Hospitality, an alternative to detention for asylum seekers.

Sister Antonetta Martinka, from St. Philip Benzi Parish, was a teacher and pastoral minister. She served at St. Luke, River Forest; Trinity High School and Trinity Convent, River Forest; St. Zachary and Divine Providence Convent, Des Plaines; St. Giles, Oak Park; in Ottawa; and in Wisconsin. She is living in community at the Sinsinawa motherhouse, Wisconsin.

Sister Ann (Mari) McCullough was a teacher and administrator. She served at Trinity High School, River Forest, and in Wyoming and Wisconsin, where she lives in retirement in Madison and does volunteer work.

Sister Winifred (Armoul) Morgan, from Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, was a teacher and writer. She served in Freeport and in South Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin, where she lives in community at the Sinsinawa motherhouse.

Sister Mary Ellen (Mary Celestine) O’Dea, from St. Cajetan Parish, worked as an itinerant preacher, feminist biblical interpreter, retreat director, campus minister and religious education consultant. She served at St. Thomas the Apostle; the House of Connections; Sacred Heart, Palos Hills; Calvert House at the University of Chicago; De Paul University, Loop Campus; and was the spiritual coordinator for the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Loyola University’s Lakefront Campus. She also worked in Rockford and in Nebraska, Wyoming, Minnesota, Colorado and Montana. She has been based in Chicago since 2005.

Sister Joyce (Pierre) Poeschl was a teacher and administrator. She served at St. Philip Benizi, Immaculate Conception (North Park Avenue), Epiphany and St. Giles, Oak Park; in Peoria; and in Wyoming, California and Wisconsin.

Dominican Sister of Springfield

75 years

Sister Mary Dominic Joerger taught primary school. She served at St. John Bosco, St. Christina and St. James, Sauk Village. She is retired in Springfield and ministers in prayer.

60 years

Sister Colette Barker worked in elementary education. She served at St. John Bosco and St. James, Sauk Village. She is the secretary to the convent prioress in Springfield.

Sister Anne Lawrence Buchmiller worked in elementary and secondary education. She served at St. Bernadette, Evergreen Park, and Marian Catholic High School, Chicago Heights. She is the supply manager at her community’s Springfield convent.

Sister Margaret Mary Byrnes, from St. Brendan Parish, worked in pastoral ministry and religious education. She served in Aurora and Hampshire. She is the convent librarian.

Sister Myra (Myra Joseph) Flahive, from St. Bartholomew Parish, worked in elementary school education and served at St. Lawrence O’Toole, Matteson; St. Edward; and Our Lady of Grace. She does prayer ministry at her community’s Springfield convent.

Sister Mary Harold Herrmann worked in elementary and high school education. She served at St. Lawrence O’Toole, Matteson, and does prayer ministry at her community’s Springfield convent.

Sr. Judith (Francis Irene) Hilbing worked in education, social justice advocacy and congregational leadership. She served at St. Lawrence O’Toole, Matteson, where she did individual guided education; St. Martin de Porres; and with the Dominican Alliance, North American justice promoter. She is prioress at her community’s Springfield motherhouse.

Sister Bernadette Marie McGuire worked in secondary education and as a librarian. She served at St. Edward and Marian Catholic High School, Chicago Heights. She now serves her congregation as the community-wide librarian at Sacred Heart Convent, Springfield.

Sister Marilyn Jean Runkel worked in education and administration. She taught elementary school through college and is a faculty member at Benedictine University, Lisle.

Felicians

75 years

Sister Mary Imeldis Lubash, from Our Lady of Victory Parish, was a teacher and worked in supportive services and prayer and stamp ministries. She served St. Mary Magdalene; Holy Rosary; St. Joseph, Our Lady of Ransom, Niles; St. Damian, Oak Forest; Incarnation, Palos Heights; St. Linus, Oak Lawn; and Our Lady of the Angels Convent; in Downers Grove, LaSalle and Posen; and in Brazil. She now does stamp and prayer ministry at Chicago’s Our Lady of the Angels.

Sister Mary Helen Widacki was a teacher and musician and did supportive services and prayer ministry. She served at Sacred Heart (Back of the Yards) and Holy Innocents; in Joliet; and in Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma and New Mexico. She does prayer ministry at Our Lady of the Angels Convent.

70 years

Sister Mary Lorraine (Mary Maximina) Blocki has been a teacher, teacher’s aide, librarian and local archives assistant and she provided supportive services.  She served at St. John of God; St. Mary Magdalene; St. Turibius; Sts. Peter & Paul; St. Joseph (Back of the Yards); St. Helen; Good Shepherd; St. James; Holy Innocents; and Our Lady of Ransom, Niles; in Rockford; and in Wisconsin. She is the local archives assistant at Mother of Good Counsel Convent.

Sister Mary Xavier Filas ministered in elementary education, supportive services, culinary duties and as a sacristan. She served at St. Bronislava; St. Joseph (Back of the Yards); Holy Innocents; Sts. Peter & Paul; St. James; St. Andrew Home, Niles; and Mother of Good Counsel Convent; in Joliet; and in Wisconsin. She is a laundry aide at Our Lady of the Angels Convent.

Sister Mary Loritta Korzekwa was a teacher and principal in elementary schools and religious education and worked in supportive services. She served at Holy Innocents and in Alabama, Texas, California, Oklahoma and New Mexico. She now does prayer ministry at Our Lady of the Angels Convent.

Sister Maria (Maria Lucida) Paszko taught elementary school, provided supportive services and worked as a receptionist. She served at St. Mary Magdalene; Sts. Peter & Paul; St. John of God; St. Helen; St. Hedwig; Holy Innocents; St. James; St. Turibius; St. Wenceslaus; St. Bruno; St. Colette Convent; Mother of Good Counsel information office; the Provincialate; St. Stanislaus, Posen; St. Linus, Oak Lawn; St. Andrew Home, Niles, and in Wisconsin, Alabama and Rome, Italy. She now is a receptionist at Our Lady of the Angels Convent.

Sister Mary Odelle Siskoski was a teacher and principal in elementary schools. She served at St. Helen; St. Turibius; Sts. Peter & Paul; St. Hedwig; Holy Innocents; St. John of God; St. Isidore, Blue Island; and St. Linus, Oak Lawn; in Joliet, LaSalle and St. Charles; and in Wisconsin. She is a sacristan at St. Mary’s Home, Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

Sister Mary Germaine Zielinski, from St. Hedwig, Niles, taught elementary school and English, provided supportive services and worked with the International Cord Rosary and prayer ministry. She served at St. Helen; St. Turibius; Our Lady of the Garden; St. John of God; St. Bruno; Mother of Good Counsel Convent; the cardinal’s residence; St. Hubert, Hoffman Estates; and St. Andrew Home, Niles; in Rockford, LaSalle and Centralia; and in Wisconsin and Krakow, Poland. She does prayer ministry at Our Lady of the Angels Convent.

Sister Mary Felix Gil Jiminez was a teacher and principal in elementary and high schools and provided supportive services. She served in Kansas, Texas and California.

Sister Mary Verona Schultz, from St. Hedwig, Niles, was an elementary school teacher, pastoral minister, chaplain and a minister of care to the sick and homebound. She served at St. Bruno; St. Bronislava; Mundelein College; St. Helen; St. Linus, Oak Lawn; Our Lady of Ransom, Niles; and Incarnation, Palos Heights; in Lombard; and in Wisconsin and Minnesota. She is the local vicar at Our Lady of the Angels Convent.

Sister Mary Clarette Stryzewski has been an elementary school teacher, tutor, social worker and hospital administrator. She served at Our Lady of the Garden; Good Counsel High School; and St. Damian, Oak Forest; as president and CEO of Felician Health Care, Inc., and Felician Services, Inc.; in Lombard and Centralia; and in Alabama, Minnesota and Wisconsin. She is the executive liaison to healthcare, Felician Services, Inc.

50 years

Sister Connie Marie Lewandowski, from St. Joseph Parish (Back of the Yards), has been a teacher, chauffeur, building supervisor, business manager, computer tech, and director of environmental services; provided supportive services and hospitality; and worked in the finance office. She served at Good Counsel High School and in Wisconsin. She works in the finance office, where she is a computer tech, and does hospitality at Mother of Good Counsel Central Convent.

Sister Mary Geralyn Mroczkowski was an elementary school teacher, principal and provincial councilor. She served at St. Mary Magdalene; Mount Carmel Academy; Mother of Good Counsel; St. Damian, Oak Forest; and Our Lady of Ransom, Niles; in Downers Grove; and in Alabama and Pennsylvania, where she is the Our Lady of Hope provincial councilor in Beaver Falls.

Franciscan Sisters of Chicago

60 years

Sister M. Bernadette Bajuscik worked in congregational leadership, health care and education. She served as administrator/director and local minister at Guardian Angel Day Care Center; at St. Louise de Marillac, LaGrange Park; and in several administrative roles at St. Anthony Medical Center, Crown Point, Indiana, and in Gary, Indiana. She is the general minister and associate director of her community in Lemont.

Sister Jeanne Marie Toriskie worked in education school administration, social justice and the sainthood cause of Mother Theresa Dudzik. She served at Madonna High School, Five Holy Martyrs, St. Florian, St. Stanislaw Bishop and Martyr and as adjunct professor and coordinator of the STEM program at Saint Xavier University. She is the general vicar, director of the beatification outreach program and chair of the social justice committee.

Sisters of St. Francis-Dubuque, Iowa

70 years

Sister Joan Hosch worked in elementary education and administration. She served at St. John Brebeuf, Niles, for 13 years and at St. Anne, Hazel Crest. She is retired and lives at Mount St. Francis, Dubuque, Iowa.

60 years

Sister Anne Marie Smith has been a pastoral minister and director of religious education. She served at St. Christopher, Midlothian, and St. John Brebeuf, Niles. She is a pastoral associate in Tempe, Arizona.

Hospital Sisters of St. Francis

70 years

Sister Joan M. Hamann worked in nursing, hospital admissions and administration. She served at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Hospital and at Wieboldt’s Furniture Store. She now ministers in prayer and adoration, St. Francis Convent, Springfield, Illinois.

Sister Helene Schneider worked in hospital nursing, administration, home health, pastoral care and chaplaincy. She served at Alverna Home Nursing Center. She now ministers in prayer and adoration, St. Francis Convent, Springfield, Illinois.

Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis-Mary Immaculate

60 years

Sister Mary Ann Clark, from Sacred Heart Parish, Englewood, was a teacher, religious educator, parish secretary and business manager. She served at St. Procopius High School and Divine Savior, Norridge, as well as in Joliet, where she is treasurer for the Sisters of Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home.

Sister Elaine Murphy, from Sacred Heart Parish, Englewood, was a teacher, missionary, administrator and congregational leader. She served at St. Pascal and Our Lady of Guadalupe, did missionary work in Brazil, was president of her congregation and worked in several capacities in Joliet, where she now does community service at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home.

40 years

Sister Mary Jane Griffin, from St. Theresa Parish, Palatine, has been a parish minister, director of religious education, novice director, advocate/consultant and rector and adjunct instructor. She served at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, in Joliet and in South Bend, Indiana, where she held several positions at the University of Notre Dame. She is the general treasurer for the Sisters of St. Francis, Joliet.

25 years

Sister Sharon Frederick, from Sacred Heart Parish, Englewood, served in several administrative roles at the University of St. Francis and at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home in Joliet. She volunteers at Daybreak Homeless Shelter and Silver Cross Hospital, also in Joliet.

Sisters of St. Joseph-Third Order of St. Francis

70 years

Sister Stephen Grzelinski, from St. Turibius Parish, was a teacher and a self-employed upholsterer. She served at St. Roman; St. Barbara High School; St. Mary of Czestochowa, Cicero; and in Indiana. In her work as an upholsterer, she founded the shop called the ReSTORE at Chicago’s Lourdes Convent. She is retired and active in prayer ministry.

60 years

Sister Judith David, from St. Agnes Parish, was a pastoral associate/minister, director of religious education and congregational leader. She served at Immaculate Conception (Talcott Avenue); St. Frances of Rome, Cicero; and at St. Bartholomew. She was the third vice-president of her community’s central leadership team. She is retired.

School Sisters of St. Francis

85 years

Sister Rose Mack was a homemaker, certified nurse and child care worker. She served at St. Martin Convent; St. Joseph Convent, Wilmette; Immaculate Conception Convent (Talcott Avenue); St. Nicholas Convent; St. Benedict Home; American Hospital; Thorek Medical Center; as a private child care worker; and in Wisconsin, Michigan and Nebraska. She did prayer and presence at St. Joseph Convent, Campbellsport, Wisconsin, and now lives in retirement at the Maria Linden Apartments for Seniors, Milwaukee..

80 years

Sister Antoinette Schreiber worked in elementary education, including as a school principal, in parish ministry, in administration and as volunteer tutor. She served at St. Maurice and St. Walter and in Aurora, Roselle, Bloomingdale, Joliet and McHenry. In her retirement, she did ministry of prayer and presence at St. Joseph Convent, Campbellsport, Wisconsin, and at Villa St. Francis, Milwaukee.

75 years

Sister Frances Kowewer worked in education, including work as a school principal, library media specialist and substitute teacher; in business; and as a volunteer. Brother Martin Spellman, a Chicago native, served his religious life with the Christian Brothers of the Midwest. He is retired in a Chicago Christian Brothers community.

60 years

Brother Christopher Buck, a Chicago native, ministered at St. Joseph High School, Westchester, and De La Salle Institute. He is retired and does volunteer work in Chicago.

Brother Kent Connolly devoted his religious life to teaching. He lives in retirement in a Chicago Christian Brothers community.

Brother Kevin Fitzgerald taught at St. George High School, Evanston; St. Paul High School; St. Patrick High School; and De La Salle Institute. He is retired and volunteers doing transport work.

Brother Edward Staszak was a teacher who ministered at St. Joseph High School, Westchester; Mercy Home for Boys and Girls; Gordon Tech; and De La Salle Institute. He is retired in a Christian Brothers community.

Brother Daniel Susek was a teacher. He lives in retirement in a Christian Brothers community.

Claretians

60 years

Father Mark Brummel, from Christ the King Parish, was a teacher and librarian, performed pastoral and administrative duties and was treasurer of the Claretians, U.S. province. He served on many boards, including the Claretian Provincial Council, Eastern Province, the National Federation of Priests, Chicago Family Health Center (Claretian Medical Center), 8th Day Center for Justice, Thomas More Association, Chicago Legal Clinic Claretian Associates (Villa Guadalupe) and the Claret Center. He is the director of the St. Jude League/Claretian Publications and local superior of the Oak Park Community.

25 years

Father Jose Sanchez worked in formation and administration, was a provincial consultor and vocation co-director and did pastoral work. He served at Claret House, Barbastro House, the Holy Cross/IHM community and in Texas and California. He now is the province vicar, a member of the provincial council and the province’s prefect of formation.

Franciscans

65 years

Father Phil Hogan taught and did pastoral formation and prison ministry. He served at Hales Franciscan High School for more than 45 years, at Bridewell Prison Hospital and in Quincy. He does supply ministry for the Archdiocese of Chicago.

60 years

Father Charles Faso, a Chicago Heights native, worked in formation, preaching ministry, retreats, as a confessor, teaching, in pastoral work and serving as provincial liturgical consultant and administrator. He served at St. Peter Friary, St. Joseph Friary and has been a pilgrimage leader and an itinerant preacher of retreats to Franciscans while residing at St. Gratian Friary, Countryside.

Brother John (Jack) Hardesty worked in business, computer and technology services and a book bindery. He served at Hales Franciscan High School as registrar and business manager and in Oak Brook, Downers Grove, Westmont, Teutopolis and Quincy and in Ohio. He is retired and lives at St. Clare’s Villa, Alton.

Father George Musial, a Chicago native, has been a confessor and chaplain and did pastoral work. He served at St. Peter’s Friary, St. Roch Friary and Oak Forest Hospital, Oak Forest; in Joliet as an associate pastor at Stateville Prison; and in Minnesota, Texas and Nebraska. He is a confessor in Chicago.

Father Gilbert Ostdiek has worked in Chicago for more than 50 years, serving as vice president, dean and now professor of theology at Catholic Theological Union. He also ministered at the Antonianum and in Teutopolis.

Father Elric Sampson, a Chicago native, has served as director of the priesthood formation program at St. Peter’s Church, worked in pastoral ministry, was an administrator; served at Hales Franciscan High School, Corpus Christi Friary and St. Joseph Friary; and worked in Westmont and in Indiana, Ohio and Tennessee. He is a confessor at St. Peter’s Friary, where he has been since 1996.

50 years

Father Donald Blaeser, a Chicago native, was a confessor at St. Peter’s Church; did preaching ministry at St. Gratian Friary, Countryside; was a teacher and chaplain at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital; and ministered in Oak Brook and in Minnesota and Indiana. He also was an associate pastor and the associate director of novices. He now is pastor of St. Francis Solanus, Quincy.

Father Dennis Koopman did preaching ministry while in Countryside, was an associate professor of chemistry at Quincy University and now is chaplain to the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis, Springfield, Illinois.

Brother James Lammers is a member of the carpenters’ union. He ministered as a household maintenance staff member, engineer and student. He served at Hales Franciscan High School, St. Peter Friary and Corpus Christi Friary; in Countryside, Oak Brook, Quincy, Teutopolis and Springfield, Illinois; and in Ohio. He is retired.

25 years

Father Johnpaul Cafiero has spent his entire ministry in Chicago. He has done parish missions with outreach to the Hispanic community, was the assistant director of the Franciscan Vocation Office and has served at Hales Franciscan High School and at Corpus Christi. He does preaching ministry and is the Illinois State Police chaplain.

Passionists 

60 years

Father Donald Senior has been an educator and scholar. He was a teacher and professor and served as president and chancellor at Catholic Theological Union. He now is president emeritus, chancellor and professor of New Testament studies at CTU.

Missionaries of the Precious Blood

25 years

Brother Daryl Charron worked in formation and social justice and was a hospice chaplain and mission director. He served in Missouri and Vietnam and now works as director of initial formation for his community in Hyde Park. His volunteer ministries include visiting the sick at the University of Chicago Medical Center, working at a Chicago food pantry and doing hospice work.

Redemptorists

50 years

Father Peter Schavitz, an Evanston native, was a parish mission preacher, seminary professor, vocation minister and provincial administrator who also did radio and video projects and parish ministry. He served at St. Alphonsus and St. Michael (Old Town).

Father Richard Thibodeau was a community, parish and province leader. He served as pastor at St. Michael (Old Town) and now is the director of the Redemptorist Retreat Center, Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.

Servites

60 years

Father Conrad M. Borntrager, from Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, has been a provincial historian, seminary teacher and pastoral minister. He served at University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, Catholic Theological Union, Our Lady of Benburb Priory in Ireland and Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, where he is the associate pastor.

50 years

Father Thomas M. Greaney was a teacher, director of Servite seminarians and pastoral minister. He served at Holy Cross High School, River Grove; St. Domitilla, Hillside; Marist High School; and in New Jersey and New Mexico. He is retired at Our Lady of Sorrows Monastery.

Father Michael M. Guimon was ordained a priest at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish. He has been a hospital chaplain, teacher, vocation director and congregational leader. He served as assistant provincial and prior provincial of the Servite Eastern Province, Servite vocation director, prior provincial of the Servite U.S.A. Province and master of novitiate formation. He also served in Rome and California. He is prior of the Servite community at Our Lady of Sorrows Monastery and senior care minister.

Society of the Divine Word

70 years

Father Charles Heskamp worked in education, administration, pastoral care and as a rector. He served in Ohio, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Louisiana and West Virginia. He is retired at Divine Word Residence, Techny.

Father Joseph (Dennis) Logue ministered as a Divine World brother for three decades and before being ordained to the priesthood in 1983. He worked in pastoral care, hospital chaplaincy and prison ministry. He served at the O-Neb-Da vineyards cultivating, bottling and shipping sacramental wines; was the first Catholic priest to be the hospital chaplain in the 100-year history of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center; and has dual faculties in both Roman and Byzantine rites. He served in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Missouri. He is retired at the Divine Word Residence, Techny.

65 years

Father Joseph Bugner, from St. Mary Parish, Buffalo Grove, spent 35 years as a missionary in New Guinea, offering pastoral care and building of a medical clinic there. He is retired and lives at Divine Word Residence, Techny.

Father Joseph Detig worked in education, pastoral care and provincial leadership and was a vocation director and missionary. He ministered in Taiwan and the Philippines as well as Louisiana and California. He is retired and lives at Divine Word Residence, Techny.

Father Paul Gootee was a missionary in Indonesia for 55 years and did pastoral care and chaplaincy. He built several churches and schools, worked with farmers’ unions and a consumer cooperative and was chaplain of the Center of Rehabilitation, a medical clinic and farm to assist people with leprosy. He is retired and lives at Divine Word Residence, Techny.

60 years

Father Jack Farley worked in communications, advancement, administration and pastoral care. He served as editor of Missionary Youth magazine; was director of the Latin America Office and assistant director of the Divine Word Mission Office; was director of Divine Word International-Techny and led the renovation of St. Mary’s Seminary that turned it into Techny Towers Conference and Retreat Center; was a retreat director and staff member of RENEW International, a parish-based Bible sharing program in 20 countries. He also worked in Massachusetts. He is retired at Divine World Residence, Techny.

Father Raymond Hannah was a missionary in Papua New Guinea for 21 years and did African American ministry, pastoral care and education and worked in the congregation’s mission office. He served in Louisiana, California and Canada. He is retired and lives at the Divine Word Residence, Techny.

Father Raymond Hober was a missionary in the Philippines and worked in education, school administration and congregational leadership. He is retired and lives at Divine Word Residence, Techny.

Father Gerald Theis was a missionary in Papua New Guinea for 52 years serving 50 outstations. He did evangelization, pastoral care, education and school and archdiocese administration. He is retired at Divine Word Residence, Techny.

50 years

Father Casimir Garbacz was a missionary in Ghana for 16 years and did administration, pastoral care and congregational leadership. One of the parishes he worked at encompassed 40 chapels and 32 Catholic schools, while another had 25 villages and 14 Catholic schools. He was the director of development for the society’s Chicago province, rector of the Techny community, director of the archdiocese’s Office for European Catholics and served at St. Joseph the Worker, Wheeling. He is the assistant bookkeeper for the SVD Districts in Techny.

Father James Heiar did missionary work in the Philippines, taught and worked as a chaplain, retreat director and congregational leader. He also served in Wisconsin, Iowa and Massachusetts. He is retired at the Divine Word Residence, Techny.

Father Gerard O’Doherty worked in pastoral care, education, administration and congregational leadership. He served in the Philippines, Ireland and California. He is retired at the Divine Word Residence, Techny.

Father Derek Simons was a pastoral minister on Chicago’s South Side and worked in broadcasting and communications. He is the founder and creative director of Angels Studio; co-founder of Racebridges, a non-sectarian, multimedia initiative that challenges injustice and seeks to build community among all people; a pioneer in using communication and video to promote dialogue among people of different cultural, religious and racial backgrounds; and the recipient of several broadcasting awards including Gabriel Awards and the Catholic Academy for Communication Arts Professional’s Personal Achievement Award. He is the executive producer of Bridges at Techny.

40 years

Father Dennis Callan was a missionary in Taiwan and South Korea and, while there, served in education, administration, pastoral care, chaplaincy and congregational leadership. He now is the Tri-Province superior delegate, vice-rector of the Divine Word Residence and chaplain at Holy Spirit Chapel at Techny Towers Conference & Retreat Center, Techny.

25 years

Father Janusz Horowski ministered in missionary work, philanthropy, school administration and pastoral care. He served in Mexico, Poland and Brazil and now is the director of development, Society of the Divine Word Chicago Province, Techny.

Father Nhan Van Tran was a missionary in Argentina, where he did pastoral work. He also served in Iowa and now is his congregation’s treasurer at the Divine Word Residence, Techny.

Viatorians

60 years

Father John N. Peeters, from St. Viator Parish, has been a congregational administrator, parochial vicar and novice master. He served as provincial director in Evanston and Arlington Heights; ministered in Springfield, Bourbonnais and Kankakee; was secretary to the superior general in Rome; and served in Colombia and Belize. He is pastor of St. Patrick Parish, Kankakee.

Father Patrick W. Render has been a teacher and school administrator, assistant superior and provincial superior and pastoral minister. He served at St. Viator High School and at the Viatorian Province Center, Arlington Heights; in Springfield, Illinois, and in Nevada. He is pastor of St. Viator Parish.

Father John E. Van Wiel was a high school teacher and school administrator, coach, vocation director, assistant superior and local superior and sacristan. He served at St. Viator High School and at the Viatorian Province Center, Arlington Heights, and Kankakee, Rock Island and Springfield, Illinois. He is retired.

Father Robert M. Egan, a Chicago native from St. Joseph the Worker Parish, Wheeling, has been a teacher and school administrator, pastoral minister, athletic director and as an assistant provincial and provincial. He served at St. Viator High School and the Viatorian Province Center, Arlington Heights; was pastor of St. Viator Church; and ministered in Springfield, Illinois, and Nevada. He is superior general at the Province Center.
