Those waiting to become full members of the church watch as Cardinal Cupich lights a fire outside Holy Name Cathedral during the Easter Vigil on April 20. The grand liturgy begins in darkness and continues with the lighting of a new fire and paschal candle. Easter, the feast of the Resurrection, is April 21 in the Latin-rite church this year. People from Holy Name Cathedral Parish became full members of the Catholic Church during the celebration by receiving the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation, as part of the RCIA process. On this night, hundreds of adults were baptized and received into the Catholic Church, and hundreds more will complete their initiation by being confirmed and receiving the Eucharist during Easter Vigil services throughout the Archdiocese.
