Men and women religious celebrate jubilee anniversaries

With this issue, Chicago Catholic salutes and thanks the religious men and women who have devoted their lives to serving the people of God. In the following pages, we honor hundreds of teachers, nurses, chaplains and parish priests who have given anywhere from 25 to 85 years in service of the Lord. Join us in offering them our gratitude.

Women religious

Sisters of St. Agnes

50 years

Sister Monique Heller taught at St. Joseph (Orleans Street) and in New York, Ohio and Wisconsin. She now teaches at St. Thomas of Canterbury School.

Sisters of St. Casimir

75 years

Sister M. Concetta Petrauskas worked in elementary and secondary education. She taught at Providence of God, All Saints (Roseland), Maria High School and in Pennsylvania, Nebraska and Ohio. She now does prayer and presence at Franciscan Village, Lemont.

Sister Philip M. Ramoska worked in health  care. She served at Holy Cross Hospital, Loretto Hospital, Holy Family Villa and at the Sisters of St. Casimir Motherhouse and Infirmary and in Nebraska, New Mexico, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. She now does prayer and presence at Franciscan Village, Lemont.

60 years

Sister Marilyn Karpovich worked in education, administration, young adult ministry, medical records and as director of the Sisters of St. Casimir Associate relationships. She served at Holy Cross Parish; Nativity BVM; St. Norbert, Northbrook; Sts. Peter and Paul; and Maria High School. She now does prayer and presence at Franciscan Village, Lemont.

Sister M. June Puishys was a registered nurse at Holy Cross Hospital. She now does prayer and presence at Franciscan Village, Lemont.
Sisters of Christian Charity 

70 years

Sister Helen Kron, from St. Aloysius Parish, was a teacher, sacristan, a college registrar and secretary, a high school secretary and in community leadership. She served at Josephinum High School, Mallinckrodt College, at the Motherhouse and at Sacred Heart Convent, all in Wilmette; in Clarendon Hills and Chillicothe, Illinois; and in Michigan and Missouri. She now supervises the housekeeping staff at Sacred Heart Convent and provides hospitality for the chaplain.

Adrian Dominicans

70 years

Sister Therese (Thomas Frances) DeCanio, a Chicago native, taught at Ascension, Harvey; St. Edmund, Oak Park; Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette; and St. Ignatius College Prep. She is retired in Westchester.

Sister Marion (Ellen Michael) O’Connor, a Chicago native, taught at St. Laurence; Our Lady of Loretto, Hometown; and Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette. She is retired in Adrian, Michigan.

60 years

Sister Marily (Margaret Felice) Barnett worked in education, lay ministry formation and liturgical ministry. She first was a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph and later joined the Adrian Dominicans. She served as the associate director of the Office of Worship for the Archdiocese of Chicago and now does lay ministry formation for the Diocese of Tucson, Arizona.

Sister Charlotte (Margaret Felice) Cote, from St. Laurence Parish, worked in education and pastoral ministry in New Mexico, Arizona, California and Florida. She is retired in Adrian, Michigan.

Sister Mary Katherine (Sean Marie) Dolan, a Chicago native, worked in education, community organizing and pastoral ministry. She was a pastoral associate at St. Martin De Porres and administrator of Grace House, the women’s residence of St. Leonard’s Ministries for formerly incarcerated men and women. She is retired in Adrian, Michigan. 

Sister Patricia Ann (Mary Corita) Dulka ministered in education, social work, therapy, congregational leadership and school administration. She served at Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette; Mercy Home for Boys and Girls; and was chapter prioress for the Adrian Dominican Midwest Mission Chapter in Chicago. She now is the co-chapter prioress for retired sisters at the Adrian Dominican motherhouse in Adrian, Michigan.

Sister Maureen (Shaun Paul) Fenion ministered in education and social work. She taught at St. Rita; Santa Maria del Popolo, Mundelein; St. Joseph, Homewood; and Queen of Apostles, Riverdale. She is retired in Adrian, Michigan.

Sister Joan Hinz was an educator at St. Albert the Great, Oak Lawn; Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette; and Aquinas High School. She is retired in Warren, Michigan.

Sister Veronica (Anne Veronica) Kelley, a Chicago native, was an educator and a hospital nurse. She served at Our Lady of Loretto, Hometown, and Ascension, Harvey, and studied at St. Xavier University School of Nursing. She is retired.

Sister Many Anne (Anita) Yanz, a Chicago native, was a teacher and director of religious education. She served at St. Denis and St. Richard parishes and at St. Irenaeus, Park Forest. She is retired in Chicago Ridge and volunteers at Little Company of Mary Hospital. 

Springfield Dominicans

60 years

Sister Elizabeth McAuliffe, from St. John Bosco Parish, was a teacher and director of religious education. She served at St. Bernadette, Evergreen Park; St. Edward; St. John Bosco; St. Lawrence O’Toole, Matteson; St. Cecilia, Mount Prospect; and St. Rene Goupil, where she currently serves.

50 years

Sister Barbara Blesse worked in elementary education, theology and campus ministry and Bible study. She served at Marian Catholic High School, Chicago Heights; Catholic Theological Union; in the Springfield and Peoria, Illinois, dioceses and at Siena Heights University. She is the vicaress general of her congregation.

Sister Ann (Ann Jeremy) Brummel served as principal of St. Bernadette, Evergreen Park, and in Peoria, Springfield and Aurora, Illinois. She now is the head of Pope St. John Paul II Catholic Academy, Aurora.

Sister Suzanne Donner served at St. Bernadette, Evergreen Park; St. Christina; St. Edward; St. Michael and in Decatur, East Alton, Springfield and La Salle, Illinois. She is the director of grounds, Jubilee Farm, Springfield.

Sinsinawa Dominicans

80 years

Sister Marielle Schmitt taught and did library work and pastoral ministry. She served at St. Luke, River Forest, and St. Giles, Oak Park, and in Rockford, Illinois; Washington, D.C.; Minnesota; New York; Iowa, Missouri; and Wisconsin. She lives in community at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green, Wisconsin.

Sister Mary (Mary Florian) Wolff was a teacher and principal. She served at St. Philip Benizi; Visitation; St. Philip the Apostle, Northfield; and Trinity High School, River Forest; and in Peoria, Illinois; Minnesota; California; Colorado; and Wisconsin. She lives in community at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green, Wisconsin.

75 years

Sister Mary Rita Kendergan was a teacher and parish minister at St. Mary, Evanston, and in New York, Minnesota, South Carolina, South Dakota, California, Iowa and Wisconsin, where she lives in community at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green.

Sister Margaret Mihm was a teacher and business administrator. She served as secretary of the Eastern Province of the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation, River Forest, and of Project OPUS (Order of Preachers in the United States). She also worked in Iowa, Missouri, Alabama, Minnesota, Texas, Georgia, New Jersey and in Wisconsin, where she lives in community at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green.

70 years

Sister Mary (Mary Ania) Schlehuber was a teacher and hospital minister. She served at St. Jarlath; St. Vincent Ferrer, River Forest; St. Sabina; St. Louis de Montfort, Oak Lawn; in Rockford, Illinois; and in California and Wisconsin, where she lives in community at the Sinsinawa motherhouse.

60 years

Sister Marilyn (Antonietta) Aiello, from St. Angela Parish, worked in health care and education. She completed her medical residency training at Resurrection Hospital and has served as medical consultant for the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa since 2007. She also served in Alabama; Mississippi; Washington, D.C.; and Wisconsin.

Sister Ruella (Mary Des Neiges) Bouchonville, from Ascension Parish, Oak Park, devoted her religious life to teaching and a love of animals. She served at St. Mary, Evanston; Dominican University, River Forest; Misericordia North; Harper College, Palatine; College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn; and in Minnesota, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Florence, Italy. She lives in community at the Sinsinawa motherhouse.

Sister Barbara (Milo) Dannhausen, from Queen of All Saints Parish, worked in organizational development and served in Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin.

Sister Maureen (Bernard) Kelley was a teacher and principal and worked in parish social justice ministries. She served at St. Giles, Oak Park; St. Thomas More; and for the Sinsinawa congregation as vicaress provincial for the Southwest Province. She also worked in Mississippi, Wisconsin, Alabama and Florida, where she now lives in community in Jacksonville and volunteers.

Sister Mary (Maria de Ricci) Paynter was a professor and academic dean at Dominican University, River Forest. She lives in community and does volunteer work at the Sinsinawa motherhouse.

Sister Dorothea (Guillaume) Snaer taught French at Trinity High School, River Forest; Queen of Peace High School, Burbank; in Freeport, Illinois; and in Wisconsin and California, where she serves as coordinator of eucharistic ministry to the sick at Holy Family Parish, Glendale.

50 years

Sister Jane Marie Boland was a teacher and administrator at Immaculate Conception (North Park Street) and now is an administrative assistant to the dean of arts and science at Dominican University, River Forest. She also worked in Kewanee and in Peoria, Illinois, and in New Jersey and Wisconsin.

Sister Mary Therese Johnson has been a pastoral minister, director of religious education, liturgist and campus minister. She served at St. Sabina and Dominican University, River Forest; in Wapella, Illinois; and Wisconsin, where she is a pastoral minister at the Sinsinawa Dominican motherhouse.

Sister Mary Ann Mueninghoff was a teacher and religious educator, and she worked in congregation ministry and higher education. She served at St. Luke and Dominican University, River Forest, and in Minnesota, Montana, Indiana and Wisconsin, where she is living in community in Kenosha.

Sister Janet (Margaret Mary) Welsh, from St. Sabina Parish, was a history professor, campus minister and promoter of the mission. She has served since 2006 as director of the Mary Nona McGreal, OP, Center for Dominican Historical Studies at Dominican University, River Forest. She also worked in Wisconsin and California.

Felicians

75 years

Sister Mary Margaret Narloch worked in education and administration and as a provincial treasurer. She served at St. Wenceslaus, St. Hedwig Orphanage, Holy Innocents, St. Bronislava, Good Counsel High School, St. Joseph High School, Felician Health Care, as provincial treasurer for the former Mother of Good Counsel Province and in Wisconsin. She works with the International Cord Rosary organization, which makes and distributes rosaries worldwide at Mother of Good Counsel Convent.

70 years

Sister Mary Cecilia Maczko, from Holy Innocents Parish, was an educator and school principal, and she offered support services and music and prayer ministry. She served at Sts. Peter and Paul; Holy Rosary, North Chicago; St. Bronislava; St. Helen; Sacred Heart; mother of Good Counsel Convent; in Belleville and Peoria, Illinois; and in Minnesota and Wisconsin. She does prayer ministry at Our Lady of the Angels convent.

65 years

Sister Marilyn Mason was an educator, principal,  pastoral care minister and administration. She served at St. Bruno; St. Turibius; St. Linus, Oak Lawn; St. Stanislaus, Posen; St. John of God; Good Shepherd; in Centralia, Peoria and Belleville, Illinois; and in Wisconsin and Minnesota. She is the administrative director, United Stand Counseling Center.

60 years

Sister Barbara Marie Brylka, from St. Bronislava Parish, was an educator, principal, pastoral care director and provincial leaders. She served at St. Stanislaus, Posen; St. Damian, Oak Forest; and Marian Care Center; was a provincial councilor for the former Mother of Good Counsel Province; and she ministered in Joliet, Illinois, and in Wisconsin and Minneapolis. She is the director of pastoral care services, Villa St. Francis, Milwaukee.

Sister Mary Barbara Ann Bosch, from St. John of God Parish, was an educator, principal, and provincial and ministered in her congregation’s leadership. She served at Holy Innocents; Our Lady of Ransom, Niles; was provincial councilor and minister at former Mother of Good Counsel Province and minister general, Felician Sisters Generalate, Rome; and she served in Peoria, Joliet and Belleville, Illinois, and in Minnesota. She is the CEO of Felician Services, Inc., Chicago.

Sister Mary Ursula Myszka was a principal and formation director. She served at Holy Innocent; St. Bruno; St. Damian, Oak Forest; was postulant director at the former Mother of Good Counsel Province and provincial councilor there; and ministered in Peoria and Belleville, Illinois, and in Wisconsin. She is a local minister at Our Lady of the Angels convent.

Sister Mary Corinne Wrobel, from Sacred Heart Parish, worked in education and nursing at St. Helen; St. Linus, Oak Lawn; St. Turibius; Mother of Good Counsel Convent, where she was a receptionist, did transportation and was a local minister; and Our Lady of the Angels Convent, where she was enrichment coordinator and mission awareness coordinator and is now an assistant sacristan and receptionist. She also worked in the Belleville, Illinois, area and in Wisconsin. 

Sister Mary Lois Gajewski worked in education, nursing, health care and support services. She served at St. Turibius, Our Lady of Good Counsel Care Center, Mother of Good Counsel Convent, in Joliet and Centralia, Illinois; and in Wisconsin. She is a receptionist at Our Lady of Hope Provincial Center, Beaver Falls, Pennsylania.

50 years

Sister Mary Leanne Hartman, from St. Turibius Parish, worked in education, financial and pastoral care services and as a retreat and spiritual director. She served at St. Damian, Oak Forest; St. Bruno; St. Joseph High School; Felician College; Montay College; Villa Scalabrini Home, Niles; was a controller for the Felician Services, Inc.; was provincial treasurer, former Mother of Good Counsel Province; was a liturgy coordinator and spiritual director, Mother of Good Counsel Convent; and ministered in Wisconsin. She does spiritual direction, is the retreat director and does pastoral care services at Our Lady of the Angels Convent.

Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate 

60 years

Sister Suzanne Lesniewski, from Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, was a teacher, catechist director of planned giving for her religious community and member of an RCIA team and a worship commission member. She served in the Diocese of Joliet and in Champaign, Illinois. She now ministers to her congregation as a local coordinator for the sisters in her group. 

50 years

Sister Jo Anne Murphy, a Chicago native whose home parish was St. Ann, Lansing, was a teacher, principal, college instructor, computer programmer, data processing operator, administrator and a musician and artist. She served as an information systems manager for the Archdiocese of Chicago. She now gives retreats and days of reflection and runs music and imagery sessions. 

Sister Roberta Naegele taught middle school and worked as a nurse in several capacities: nurse midwife practitioner, family nurse practitioner, parish and hospice nurse and in shelters for the homeless. She served at Queen of All Saints, community home nursing in Chicago; in Joliet, Kankakee and Rockford, Illinois; and in Ohio, Mississippi, Kentucky and Brazil. She now is an independent traditional Chinese practitioner of acupuncture and shiatsu at the Wellness Center, Joliet.  

Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help

60 years
Sister Aquinas Kurtz was a teacher and principal at St. Gerard Majella, Markham; in Belleville and Red Bud, Illinois; and in Ohio, Nebraska and New Mexico. She is a hospital volunteer.

50 years
Sister Regina Marie Strassburger was a teacher, principal and leader of her congregation. She taught at St. Gerard Majella, Markham, and in Louisiana and Missouri. She works as a congregational secretary and archivist.

Sister Anthony Marie Valdez was a teacher and offered pastoral care. She served at Our Lady of the Ridge, Chicago Ridge, and in Missouri and Wisconsin. She is the director of spiritual care at Eden Springs, Green Springs, Ohio.

School Sisters of St. Francis of Christ the King 

70 years

Sister M. Alexine Brdas, from Sacred Heart Parish (East 96th Street), was a teacher, principal, CCD coordinator, moderator of the parent-teacher association, foreign language department chairperson and eucharistic minister. She served at St. Stephen; St. George (Ewing Avenue); Mount Assisi Academy and Convent, Lemont; in Joliet and Bolingbrook, Illinois; and in Ohio and Pennsylvania. She does ministry of prayer at St. Joseph Convent, Lemont.

60 years

Sister M. Celine Gersic was a teacher, organist, sacristan, administrator and CCD instructor. She served at Holy Trinity (18th and Throop streets); St. George (Ewing Street); Sacred Heart (East 96th Street); at Marian Hall, St. Alphonsus and Mount Assisi Convent, all in Lemont; and in Joliet, Illinois; and Pennsylvania and Ohio. She ministers in domestic service at the Provincial House.

Sister M. Sandra Zorko was a teacher, administrator, president of Mount Assisi Academy, pastoral associate, tri-parish RCIA director and general councilor in Italy. She served at Mount Assisi Academy, Mount Assisi Convent, St. Vincent’s Seminar, St. Alphonsus, Sts. Cyril & Methodius and St. Patrick, all in Lemont; in Bolingbrook, Joliet, Lockport and Naperville, Illinois; and in Wisconsin and Italy. She is the director of senior services at Sts. Peter and Paul, Naperville.

School Sisters of St. Francis 

80 years

Sister Ruth Marie Holzhauer taught at St. Philomena and Alvernia High School. She ministers in prayer and presence at Sacred Heart and at St. Joseph Center, both in Milwaukee.

Sister Lorraine Quella taught at Holy Angels for nearly 60 years. She now ministers in prayer and presence at Sacred Heart and at St. Joseph Center, both in Milwaukee.

Sister Mary Ruth Schweisthal worked in education, provincial administration, finance and business. She served at St. Martin, St. Benedict High School, Alvernia High School, De LaSalle Institute, Friends of the Children Project and St. Priscilla Convent. She was a provincial secretary and treasurer, building manager and worked as a receptionist and driver. She now does prayer and presence at Sacred Heart and at St. Joseph Center, Milwaukee.

75 years

Sister Lorraine Aspenleiter worked in education and spiritual direction. She taught at St. Benedict High School and is the spiritual director at Casco Parish House, Casco, Wisconsin.

Sister Margaret Ann Puhek taught at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Glenview, and Holy Angels School. She ministers in prayer and presence at Sacred Heart, Milwaukee.

Sister Bernadette Salm worked in education, music and business. She served at Sts. Cyril & Methodius; St. Matthias; St. Anne, Barrington; St. Bernadine, Forest Park; St. Martin; and St. Joseph, Summit. She was a receptionist/secretary for the Maryknoll Missionaries and for Chicago Mission Promotion. She ministers in prayer and presence at Maria Linden Senior Retirement Apartments and at St. Joseph Center, both in Milwaukee.

Sister Dorothy Weiss was a homemaker and beautician. She served at St. Philomena Convent and St. Catherine Laboure Convent, Glenview. She ministers in prayer and presence at Sacred Heart and at St. Joseph Center, both in Milwaukee.

70 years

Sister Patricia Bates worked in education, pastoral ministry and congregational administration. She taught at St. Mary, Buffalo Grove; Sts. Cyril & Methodius; St. Matthias; St. Nicholas, Evanston; and Corpus Christi. She was director of personnel for the congregation’s Holy Name Province and its formation director and was a pastoral associate at Columbus Hospital. She ministers in prayer and presence at Sacred Heart and at St. Joseph Center, both in Milwaukee.

Sister Gerda Moehler, from St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, was a psychotherapist and clinical psychologist. She worked at Catholic Family Counseling Service, was a doctoral intern at the University of Illinois-Chicago and now is a clinical psychologist in private practice. She can be reached at St. Joseph Center, Milwaukee.

Sister Theresa Pamther was an educator at St. Beatrice, Schiller Park. She is a part-time care-taker and volunteer at Capitol Lakes Memory Care Unit, Madison, Wisconsin.

Sister Rose Marie Peters, from St. Philomena Parish, taught reading at Wright College. She ministers in prayer and presence at St. Joseph Center, Milwaukee.

Sister Elaine Weber taught at St. Benedict. She ministers in prayer and presence at Sacred Heart and at St. Joseph Center, both in Milwaukee.

60 years

Sister Adelia Milligan has been a social worker and spiritual director. She served as a social worker at Lake Bluff Chicago Homes for Children and was a medical social worker at Northwest Community Hospital, Arlington Heights, where she also was as a clinical social worker in private practice. She now does spiritual direction in Hernando, Mississippi. She can be contacted at St. Joseph Center, Milwaukee.

Sisters of St. Francis, Clinton, Iowa

70 years

Sister Rosalie Noder was a teacher and religious educator and worked in AIDS ministry. She taught for 14 years at St. Francis de Paula, where she coordinated a religious education program that expanded to six other Chicago parishes and served in several capacities with the AIDS Ministry of Illinois. She ministered in other Illinois towns and in California and Iowa, where she is at the Canticle, Clinton.

60 years

Sister Judith McKenna, a Chicago native, worked in education, music, campus ministry, seminary formation and administration. She served at St. Gerald, Oak Lawn; in O’Fallon, Illinois; in Nebraska and in Iowa, where she is on the liturgy committee at the Canticle in Clinton.

Sister Dorothy Stolmeier served at St. Gerald, Oak Lawn for 33 years as a teacher, librarian, tutor, remedial teacher and office assistant. She also ministered in Belleville, Illinois, and in California and Iowa, where she now is at the Canticle in Clinton.

Sisters of St. Joseph-Third Order of St. Francis

85 years

Sister Agnes Marie Adasiewicz was a teacher, music minister, artist, seamstress and parish minister at St. Monica. She ministered in Chicago and Colorado. She now does prayer ministry.

75 years

Sister Imelda Goska, from St. Barbara Parish (Throop Street) worked in education and service to her community in Chicago as well as in Indiana and Colorado. She now does prayer ministry.

Sister Elaine Haiduk, from St. Barbara Parish (Throop Street), taught music in elementary and high schools, was a chaplain at Mercy Hospital and coordinator of her community's provinical home in Bartlett. She is retired and does prayer ministry and pastoral care at Clare Oaks Assisi Center.

Sister Charlotte Wachadlo, was a principal and teacher who ministered in Bartlett, Bridgeport, Cicero and Freeport, Illinois. She is retired and does prayer ministry.

70 years

Sister Claire Gonsowski, who was born in Chicago and attended St. Fidelis Parish, was an educator and a principal, a chaplain at Loyola Medical Center and a caregiver for the elderly and children. She is retired and does prayer ministry.

Sister Marianne Wiora was an educator, pastoral minister and did religious education with the elderly. She served in the Archdiocese of Chicago; in South Bend, Indiana; and in Puerto Rico.

60 years

Sister Eymard Chrusciel, a native of Blue Island from St. Salomea Parish, was a homemaker, driver and caregiver for elderly sisters. She ministered in Bartlett and in Indiana. She is retired.

Sister Rita Stalzer grew up in Chicago and LaGrange Park. She served for 21 years at Nazareth Academy and for 40 years as a librarian, bibliographer and library instructor at Loyola University Chicago; in Rome as director of Loyola’s Rome Center Library and as a member of the CSJ Peace, Justice and Sustainability committee and the Well Spirituality Center.

Sister Michele Elfering was a teacher and principal in elementary schools and worked at a homeless shelter. She now teaches ESL and citizenship classes for adults, is a eucharistic minister and lector and delivers food to the poor.

Sister Margaret (Peggy) Wessel taught at the Cardinal Bernardin Early Childhood Center, worked part-time for her community’s Ministry of the Arts and is on the teaching staff at St. Dennis, Lockport, Illinois.

Sister Bernadette (Rose Hermina) Eaton worked in child care administration. She has worked in the Chicago area since the 1950s, serving at St. Joseph Home for the Friendless; as a coordinator at St. Joseph Carondelet Child Center; and then Catholic Charities as project coordinator to the Office of the President, where she has been for the past 10 years.

Sister Jane Gerard served in Chicago for 40 years, most notably at DePaul University for 25 years in administrative support roles. She now is a spiritual director and manuscript transcriber for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet’s archives in St. Louis.

Sister Rita McCormick, from Nativity of Our Lord Parish, was a teacher and pastoral minister. She is a member of the community life staff at Nazareth Living Center, St. Louis, where she assists and cares for the sister residents.

She retired and volunteered in prison ministry and Scripture studies. She now does prayer ministry.

Sister Jeanine Randolph was a teacher, pastoral associate, novice director for her community, a massage therapist and executive secretary of the Intercommunity Retirement Project. She served at St. Mary, Riverdale; St. Martha, Morton Grove; St. Raphael; St. Gregory High School; Addolorata Village, Wheeling; at the Living Word Center, Arlington Heights and in Iowa, Minnesota, and Louisiana. Sister Sharon Glumb, a Chicago native, was a teacher, director of religious education, campus minister and congregational leader. Sister Catherine (Michael Ann) Dominick, from Our Lady of Angels Parish, worked in education and business. She served at Holy Cross, Northwestern National Casualty and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals and in Iowa and Mississippi. She is retired in Dubuque, Iowa.

Sister Susan (Michaela) Rink was an educator and administrator. She served as assistant dean and president of Mundelein College and in youth ministry and alcohol/chemical dependency at Parkside Medical Services, Park Ridge. She also served in Wisconsin, Missouri and Iowa, where she was treasurer for the BVM congregation. She is retired in Dubuque.

Sister Bernadette Marie (David Ann) Schvach, a Chicago native whose home parish was St. Frances of Rome, Cicero, was an educator and principal and served at St. Odilo, Berwyn, Our Lady of Lourdes and in Iowa, Colorado and Hawaii. She is retired and does volunteer work.

Sister Ann Kathleen McDonnell, from Presentation Parish, was an educator and consultant and served at St. Callistus, St. Charles and St. Pius; was an educational consultant for the Archdiocese of Chicago school board; and served in Wyoming. She did pastoral work at Queen of All Saints Basilica, where she continues to volunteer.

Sister Josephine M. (Thomas Kathryn) Roche, from Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, was an educator, administrator and consultant for the archdiocese. She taught at Alvernia High School, was a business administrative assistant and secretary of the Mundelein College theology department and worked in Wisconsin, Iowa, California and Kansas. She is retired.

Sister Agnes Cecilia Ford was a parish visitor and census worker, did religious education, served as a eucharistic minister and was an infirmarian and her community’s local superior. She served at St. Sebastian and St. Dorothy and in New York, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Maine. She is retired at Marycrest Convent, Monroe, New York.

Sister Dolores Augustine ministered in parish visitation, census and survey and religious education; was a member of her congregation’s general council and was a local superior; and did pastoral and social service work. She served at St. Ita and in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey. She is retired at Marycrest, Monroe, New York.

Sister Mary Remias, from Our Lady of the Angels Parish, ministered in parish census projects and family visitation, organizing summer programs in the inner city, social service assistance, administration, formation, religious education and work as a local superior, general councilor and assistant treasurer. She served in New York, Pennsylvania and Nigeria. She is retired at Marycrest, Monroe, New York.

Sister Helen Weinfurter taught in elementary schools and then from 1959 to 1989 was on the faculty at Saint Xavier University teaching American literature.

Sister Mary (Mateo) Fearon, a Chicago native, was a teacher, catechist, and author of religious textbooks for classroom instruction. She served at St. Joachim; St. Catherine of Siena, Oak Park; St. Stephen Protomartyr, Des Plaines; St. Gabriel; St. Malachy; Little Flower; St. James; Christ the King; Our Lady of Loretto, Hometown; Queen of Martyrs, Evergreen Park; St. Bernadine, Forest Park; St. Domitilla, Hillside; St. Gerard Majella, Markham; and at the archdiocesan Office for Religious Education. She now ministers in prayer at Mercy Circle and maintains an interest in religious education materials.

Sister Renee Humble worked in mental health and psychiatric nursing and administration. She served at the College of Nursing at St. Xavier University, the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing; Mercy Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Homewood; Mercy Hospital; and in Aurora, Illinois. She retired from health care and transferred her knowledge and skills in 1990 to care for the homeless at an Aurora shelter.

Sister Maura Lowrey was a teacher, x-ray technician and sacristan and dietary worker. She served at St. Mary West; St. Malachy; Precious Blood; St. Paul of the Cross, Park Ridge; St. Xavier University; and Jackson Park Hospital; and in Michigan, Iowa and Wisconsin. She continues to serve as a sacristan at Mercy Circle.

Sister Mary Lois Bartnicki was an educator and school administrator. She served at St. James; Little Flower; St. Gabriel; St. Joan of Arc, Skokie; in Streator and Genoa, Illinois; and in Wisconsin, where she lives in Milwaukee and does ministry of prayer.

Sister Sheila (Raymond Mary) Breen entered the convent from Chicago and worked in education and health care. She served at Mary, Seat of Wisdom, Park Ridge; St. Mary, Lake Forest; St. Justin Martyr; St. Ethelreda; Mother McAuley High School; and as a volunteer coordinator at Advocate Christ Medical Center, Oak Lawn; and in Sycamore, Illinois. Sister Susan Butters entered the convent from Chicago and worked in housing management and as a supervisor and hospital patient advocate. She served at Mercy Hospital and now is retired at Mercy Circle.

Sister Kathleen McClelland worked in teaching, library management, administration, food service and special education. She served at St. Joseph the Worker, Wheeling, Christ the King; St. Xavier University; AERO; Mercy Sisters Provincial team member and the Chicago-area Mercy Volunteer Corps. Sister Judith Niemet was an educator, artist, art therapist and administrator. She served at St. Joseph the Worker, Wheeling; Queen of Martyrs, Evergreen Park; Mother McAuley High School; and Siena High School; was a member of the Sisters of Mercy administrative team; and ministered in Bartlett and St. Charles, Illinois, and at Presence McAuley Manor, Aurora, Illinois, where she continues her volunteer work.

Sister Michelle Dermody worked in education, administration, spiritual direction and as a volunteer. Sister Gloria Rosales, from Santa Maria Incoronata Parish, was an elementary school and special education teacher and an administrator. Sister Anna Marie Zeitner, from St. Michael Parish, has been an elementary school teacher and administrator, a director of religious education, a parish administrator and in the leadership of her congregation. Father John J. Dowling, an Evergreen Park native from St. Rita of Cascia Parish, worked in parish ministry and as a missionary in Peru. He also served at St. Rita of Cascia; St. Gall; in New York and Texas. He is associate pastor of St. Turibius Parish.

Father James R. Halstead was a teacher, administrator and parish priest. He served at St. Clare of Montefalco; Catholic Theological Union; and in several administrative capacities at DePaul University, Chicago, where he now teaches.

Father Joseph E. McCormick, from St. Columbanus Parish and St. Celestine Parish, Elmwood Park, worked in pastoral ministry, formation, administration and development. Father Michael J. Slattery was a parish priest, formator, vocations director, chaplain and province treasurer. Father John Fincutter, a Libertyville native whose home parishes were St. Joseph, Libertyville; St. Mary, Lake Forest; and St. Anastasia, Waukegan; worked in education and administration and as a missionary in England. He served as rector of the Divine Word community, Techny; worked in Wisconsin and in England; and authored the Arnold Jansen Scripture Study Course. He is retired.

Father Paul Gootee ministered in pastoral care, community development and missionary work in Indonesia, where he spent 55 years. He built several churches; worked with a farmers union and a consumer cooperative; and was a chaplain for a Center of Rehabilitation, medical clinic and farm to assist people with leprosy. He is retired in Techny.

Father Andrew Biller worked in education and pastoral care, and was a missionary in the Phillippines for 40 years. He is retired in Techny.

He is the vice-postulator for the cause of canonization for St. Arnold Jansen and spent 12 years visiting parishes in Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas to promote his cause. He is retired in Techny.

Father Charles Heskamp worked in pastoral care, administration and education. He served in Ohio, New Jersey, West Virginia, Louisiana and Wisconsin. He is retired in Techny.

Brother George Haegele, from St. Sabina Parish, ministered in social work, business, finance and administration. He served as an accountant for the Chicago Province Finance Office, Techny; chairman of the SVD Chicago Province Budget and Finance Committees and in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Wisconsin. He is retired in Techny.

Father Robert Jones did vocation work, led retreats, and was a prison chaplain, paramedic and educator. He was the national formation director for Marriage Encounter and served in Ohio, Iowa and Massachusetts. He is retired in Techny.

Father Joseph Miller, from St. Margaret of Scotland Parish, was a chaplain, did pastoral ministry with young people and was an administrator. He was the provincial superior of the Society of the Divine Word Western Province and worked primarily in California. He is semi-retired.

Father Rick Andrus worked in African-American ministry, education and community development, creating programs for fair housing, healthy food and Chicago’s community policing program. He served at St. Elizabeth Parish, was appointed by Mayor Harold Washington to a commission on youth and gang violence; was a board member of the Chicago’s Renaissance Collaborative, an interdenominational group providing housing for senior citizens and other in need; and worked in St. Louis. He now is pastor of St. Paul the Apostle, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Father Robert Mertes, a Chicago native whose home parish was St. Peter, Skokie, was a brother for 15 years and served as a bookbinder at Mission Press, cook, organist and sacristan for the Techny community. He later was a teacher in Wisconsin; a chaplain in Pennsylvania and Maryland; and worked as a missionary in Australia and Japan. He is retired in Techny.

Father Brandon Hiep Nguyen has worked in vocations and formation, pastoral care, administration and as a missionary in Ecuador. He served as dean of students at Divine Word Theologate, and now serves as director of the formation program and the cross-cultural training program of the society’s Chicago Province in Techny.

Father Warren Rector was provincial librarian and provided pastoral care in hospitals and for senior care. He is a chaplain to the Felician Sisters in Chicago.

Father John R. Crocker, a Chicago native, was a teacher and associate professor of psychology at Loyola University Chicago; was secretary general of Pontifical Gregorian University; and was the director of the Pontifical Biblical Institute, Jerusalem. He now prays for the church and society.

Father Keith J. Esenther, a Chicago native, worked in academia and campus ministry. He served as principal of St. Ignatius College Prep, chaplain at Loyola University Chicago; as Chicago Province Socius; and as an English teacher at Arrupe College, Zimbabwe. He now assists with projects at the Midwest Province office in Chicago.

Father Joseph D. Folzenlogen worked in evangelization, pastoral ministry and administration. He served at St. Ignatius Parish; was founder and director of the Adult Family Center, Loyola Academy, Wilmette; was evangelization coordinator, Archdiocese of Indianapolis; and has been director of Claver Jesuit Ministry, Cincinnati, since 2003.

Brother Robert W. Schneider has been a school and campus minister, business manager and volunteer. He served as business manager, Holy Family Parish, at Loyola University Chicago; at Loyola Academy, Wilmette; and at St. Ignatius College Prep. He now prays for the church and society.

Father Robert C. Thul was a math teacher at St. Ignatius College Prep for 27 years. He now prays for the church and society.

Father George E. Von Kaenel, a Chicago native, worked in spiritual direction, administration and pastoral and campus ministry. He was a spiritual director at Mundelein Seminary/University of St. Mary of the Lake Seminary; director of campus ministry at Loyola University Chicago; executive director and general manager of, Sacred Heart Radio & TV, St. Louis; assistant to the president of Loyola University Chicago; and assistant for social and international ministries at the Chicago province office. He now prays for the church and society.

Father Paul J. Faulstich has worked in pastoral ministry, administration and teaching. He served at Loyola Academy, Wilmette, and at schools in India. He now does pastoral work. 

Father Mitchell C. Pacwa, a Chicago native, has worked in television ministry and academia. He taught at Loyola Academy, Wilmette; was assistant professor of Old and New Testaments, Loyola University Chicago; worked at University of Dallas, Texas; and has been program host at EWTN Global Catholic Network since 2002.

Father J. Michael Sparough, a Chicago native, has worked in retreat ministry and as a youth and artistic director. He served as director of Charis Ministries; at Loyola University Chicago; and in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the retreat director at Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House, Barrington.

Father Robert J. Thesing was pastor of Holy Family Parish and superior of the Jesuit First Studies Program, Loyola University Chicago. He now does pastoral ministry at Claver Jesuit Ministry.

Father Michael P. Caruso has been a campus minister, in academia and a school administrator. He served in Kansas City, Missouri, and Los Angeles, and has been president of St. Ignatius College Prep since 2010.

Father James G. Gartland was pastor of St. Procopius Parish and president and director of campus ministry at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School. He is the area vocation coordinator in Boston.

Father Paul R. Mueller worked in academia and research. He taught at St. Ignatius College Prep; Loyola University Chicago, where he also was academic dean of the Jesuit First Studies Program; and was academic dean at St. Joseph College Seminary. He is administrative vice director and researcher at the Vatican Observatory and instructor of philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University.

Father John A. Welch has been a priest and served his community in La Salette formation, province administration and in pastoral and vocation work.  He served in Georgia, Connecticut and Washington, D.C., and now is director of the Chicago La Salette Theologate.

Father David Brown, from St. Maurice Parish, was a novice master, worked in catechetics and was pastor of St. Philip Benizi and associate pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows. He is retired at Our Lady of Sorrows Monastery.

Father Alan M. Sysio, from Our Lady of the Angels Parish, ministered in secondary education and social work. He served at St. Viator High School, Arlington Heights; in Peoria, Illinois; and in California and Nevada, where he is the associate pastor, St. Thomas More Catholic Community, Henderson.

He served at St. Viator High School, Arlington Heights; Clerics of St. Viator, Province of Chicago; and was associate pastor at St. Viator Parish before appointed a bishop in the Diocese of Belize City-Belmopan, Belize.
