On June 1 Archbishop Cupich announced that Father Stephen Kanonik was appointed as moderator of the curia. Kanonik is pastor of St. Juliana Parish, 7400 W. Touhy Ave. As moderator of the curia Kanonik will coordinate and supervise the various non-financial administrative offices of the Chicago Archdiocesan Curia (Pastoral Center) to assure the goals of the archdiocese are met with respect to effective and efficient operations, compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and consistency with the overall mission of the church. He is directly responsible to the archbishop and the vicar general. “We are very pleased Father Stephen Kanonik has accepted the challenge of serving as Moderator of the Curia,” said Archbishop Cupich. “This large and complex organization needs a talented and steady hand to oversee both our operational performance and our adherence to our mission of service to the people of the archdiocese.” Kanonik was ordained in the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1982. He served as an associate at St. Bruno Parish on the South Side for six years. In 1988, he became an associate at St. Louise de Marillac Parish in LaGrange Park where he served for five years. In 1993 he was installed as pastor of St. Ladislaus Parish, a Polish bilingual parish on the city’s North Side. After a term of 12 years, Kanonik was installed as the pastor of St. Juliana Parish in 2005 and in 2010 he was named dean for Deanery IIF. Kanonik replaces Father Clete Kiley who, upon reflection, decided to spend the less than two years remaining before his retirement continuing his union ministry work. He serves as the director for Immigration Policy for UNITE HERE, the hotel and restaurant workers’ international union. In this capacity he works on immigration reform strategies with the union’s national leadership and its local members throughout the U.S. In addition, Kiley serves as a member of the National Steering Committee for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Justice for Immigrants Initiative, as well as on the Immigration Committee for the AFL-CIO.
