FATHER DANIEL J. HARTIGAN was a teacher, school administrator and clinical psychologist. He served at St. Rita of Cascia and Mendel Catholic high schools; Tolentine College, Olympia Fields; and the Chicago Board of Health and was the director of the Mid-South Mental Health Center. He is retired at Blessed Stephen Bellesini Friary, Lemont.

FATHER FRANCIS X. LAWLOR was a teacher and did pro-life and moral decency work. He served at St. Rita of Cascia High School and in Rockford, Ill. He is retired at the Blessed Stephen Bellesini Friary, Lemont.

BROTHER FREDERICK R. KAISER, from St. Theodore Parish, was a youth minister, vocation director, business manager and director of the Augustinian volunteer program, and he worked in religious education and building maintenance and management. He served at Mendel Catholic High School Monastery; Austin Friary; Tolentine Monastery, Olympia Fields; and St. John Stone Friary, where he is semi-retired. He also worked in Michigan and Wisconsin.

FATHER JAMES G. THOMPSON, from St. Rita Parish, worked in formation, counseling, pastoral ministry and as a hospital chaplain. He served at St. Rita; Little Company of Mary Hospital, Evergreen Park; St. John Stone Friary, where he ministers now; and in Missouri and Canada.

FATHER THOMAS R. McCARTHY, from St. Adrian Parish, has worked in education, vocations, campus ministry and preaching. He served at St. Rita of Cascia High School and is the director of vocations for the Augustinian provinces of Our Mother of Good Counsel (Central U.S.), St. Thomas of Villanova (Eastern U.S.) and St. Joseph (Canada). He ministers from St. Rita Monastery.

FATHER BERNARD R. SCIANNA, from St. Stephen Parish, was a teacher and school administrator. He served at St. Rita of Cascia High School; in New Lenox, Ill.; and in Oklahoma. He is the prior provincial of the Augustinian Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel, St. Rita Monastery.

FATHER DONALD EHR served in congregation leadership, pastoral care and community development in Chicago. He served as pastor of St. Elizabeth; provincial superior of the SVD’s Eastern Province; charter member of the board of directors of the Genesis Housing Corporation; and worked in Washington, D.C., and New Jersey. He is the priest in residence at St. Anselm.

FATHER PAUL GOOTEE was a missionary in Indonesia for 55 years. While there, he did pastoral care in parishes, built several churches and schools, founded the Farmers’ Union and a consumer cooperative and was chaplain of the Center of Rehabilitation, a medical clinic and farm to assist people with leprosy. He is retired in Techny.

60 YEARS

FATHER ANDREW BILLER worked in the Philippines for 39 years, teaching at seminaries, serving as dean of theology at Divine Word College and received a Life-giving Achievement Award from Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. He also did pastoral care in Missouri and is retired in Techny.

FATHER ARNOLD LANG worked in education, pastoral care and was a missionary in Appalachia. He served in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Iowa and at several West Virginia locations. He is retired in Techny.

50 YEARS

FATHER JOSEPH BUGNER, from St. Mary Parish, Buffalo Grove, was a missionary in Papua New Guinea for 35 years. He did pastoral care, supervised catechists and built the Kuli medical clinic there. He is retired at Techny.

FATHER DAVID STREIT, from St. Gregory the Great Parish, served in academics and international and congregation administration. He served in West Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and in Canada. He assists in pastoral care in the SVD Appalachian District and is semi-retired in Techny.

25 YEARS

FATHER CHARLES SMITH, from Our Lady of the Gardens Parish, has been a missionary in Bolivia and a hospital chaplain, and has worked in African-American ministry. He served as a chaplain in the federal prison system; is a founding member of the Bowman Francis Ministry team; is president of Apostolics for Life; coauthored “Boyhood to Manhood” and “My Family, Our Family;” and has been an organizational consultant and trainer with numerous nonprofit, community groups and organizations. He and his identical twin brother are the first African- American twins to both become Catholic priests. He is a hospital chaplain at Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center, Indianapolis.

FATHER CHESTER SMITH, from Our Lady of the Gardens Parish, has worked in pastoral and African-American ministry. He served at St. Anselm; is a founding member of the Bowman Francis Ministry team; served as president of the National Black Clergy Caucus; coauthored “Boyhood to Manhood” and “My Family, Our Family”; and did pastoral ministry in Missouri, Georgia and Indiana. He and his identical twin brother are the first African-American twins to become Catholic priests. He is the director of the Bowman Francis Ministry team, Indianapolis.

FATHER ROBERT ROERNER has been a vocation director and ministered in gerontology and as volunteer coordinator for Milwaukee Capuchin ministries. He now serves as co-director for St. Ben’s Community Meal, Milwaukee.

50 YEARS

FATHER ANTHONY CHOJNACKI, from St. Mary Magdalene Parish, devoted his religious life to internal friary ministry, which he now does at the Lourdes Friary, Cedar Lake, Ind.

FATHER LESLIE HOPPE, from St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish, is a professor of Old Testament Scripture at Catholic Theological Union, and he does weekend pastoral assistance at St. Rosalie, Harwood Heights. He also was the provincial minister of Franciscan Friars, Assumption BVM Province in Wisconsin and provincial vicar.

BROTHER JERRY TOKARZ, from St. John of God Parish, worked in education and was a history lecturer; dean of students; provincial director of communications and secretary of the province. He served in Pennsylvania and now is the provincial historian and author at the Assumption BVM Friary, Pulaski, Wis.

FATHER FINIAN ZAUCHA, from Holy Innocents Parish, was a pastor who worked in parochial and Byzantine ministries. He served as a provincial librarian, archivist, pastor and chaplain to the Manitowoc Franciscan Sisters in Wisconsin. He now is pastor at Assumption BVM, Pulaski, Wis.

FATHER BERNARD KENNEDY has worked in education and Franciscan formation and was an instructor in the pastoral theology diaconate formation program for the Archdiocese of Chicago. He served at Notre Dame and Holy Cross high schools and was a chaplain to the Holy Cross Brothers. He now is the interprovincial director of friar formation and interprovincial director of priestly formation, St. Joseph Friary, and director of spiritual formation for the diaconate program for the archdiocese.

FATHER CHARLES W. KOHLERMAN has been a teacher, administrator, retreat leader and seminary chaplain, and he gave parish missions, did formation work and was a congregation leader. He served at Notre Dame High School for Boys, Niles, and was the assistant village manager for the Village of Niles, Ill. He also worked as the religious superior at two Holy Cross facilities in Notre Dame, Ind. where he now lives.

FATHER JAMES N. WATZKE, a Chicago native, was a clinical and consulting psychologist. He served at the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, Westside Veterans Hospital, in Massachusetts and in Santiago, Chile. He now has a full-time private practice as a Chicago-area clinical and consulting psychologist.

FATHER RICHARD W. ANDERSON devoted his religious life to adult faith formation. He lives at St. Ignatius Jesuit Residence.

FATHER JOHN ANDREE was a missionary and worked in administration and pastoral ministry. He was director of Villa Redeemer Retreat Center, Glenview; ministered at St. Alphonsus; and was director of the Co- Redemptorist Association. He is semi-retired and helps coordinate his province’s mission team at St. Michael Parish (Cleveland Avenue).

FATHER HARRY GRILE worked in education and administration, as a parish mission preacher and did publications work. He ministered at Blessed Sacrament/Our Lady of Lourdes; was director of the Redemptorist theology students attending Catholic Theological Union; was president and publisher of Liguori Publications and served in Minnesota and Washington. He now is provincial of the Redemptorist province.

FATHER JOHN PHELPS worked in pastoral ministry, in an apostolate for young people and as a vocation director. He began Life Directions, a program he initiated for young people in several cities. He is at St. Michael (Cleveland Avenue), where he continues his apostolate to young people.

FATHER GREGORY MAY ministered primarily to Hispanic communities. He served at Mission San Juan Diego, Arlington Heights, and in Colorado, Michigan and Texas. He is at the Redemptorist Renewal Center, Picture Rocks, Cortaro, Ariz.

FATHER PAUL BINH TA has worked in pastoral ministry, with youth and in administration. He served at St. Michael (Cleveland Avenue) in the youth program Life Directions; at St. Alphonsus; and was director of the Redemptorist Theology Residence, and he served in Louisiana. SISTER MARY LAWRENCE PUISHYS worked in education, school and health care administration and as a health care patient advocate. She served at St. George; Immaculate Conception (44th Street); Providence of God; St. Joseph; St. Casimir, Chicago Heights; Holy Cross Hospital; and in Florida and Pennsylvania. She is a Holy Cross Hospital patient advocate.

SISTER LORRAINE THERESE SIMINAS, a Chicago native from Our Lady of the Ridge Parish, Chicago Ridge, worked in education. She served at Holy Cross Hospital, where she was director of its Intensive Care Unit; was a participant in the Solidarity Mission to Bolivia 19 times; and a volunteer at St. Basil Free Clinic for 20 years. She is a cardiologist and now director of the echocardiology lab at Holy Cross Hospital.

SISTER BARBARA EHRLER, from St. William Parish, has offered retreat and spiritual direction and religious formation and served as a congregation leader. She was on staff at the Longwood, Warrenville and Chicago Cenacle retreat houses and was superior general of the congregation and director of preparation for perpetual vows in the United States and in the Philippines. She is the coordinator of the Cenacle Spiritual Center in Lantana, Fla.

SISTER JUDITH BRISELDEN, a Chicago native, ministered in teaching, administration, adult education, social work and service as an English as a second language and literacy teacher. She worked at Our Lady of the Gardens, Josephinum High School and now is the director of adult education at St. Vincent Family Services, where she teaches GED preparation.

SISTER CAROLINE CLARK was a teacher, principal, archdiocesan mission coordinator, vocation director and parish minister. She served as a parish minister at St. Vincent de Paul Parish and was the coordinator of outreach services. She is the Midwest regional spiritual advisor for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Farmington Hills, Mich.

SISTER MARY QUINN, from Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, worked in teaching, health care and social ministry. She was the Daughters of Charity liaison for St. Joseph Health Centers and Hospital and coordinator of volunteers for Marillac Social Center. She now does ministry of prayer in Evansville, Ind.

SISTER JOAN CLARE COONEY, who was baptized at St. Henry and received First Communion and confirmation at St. Gertrude Parish, taught in elementary and secondary schools, was a reading supervisor for her community, taught reading courses for Loyola and DePaul universities and at Mallinckrodt College and was a supervisory education consultant for the Archdiocese of Chicago. SISTER MARY BERNARD LYNCH, from Little Flower Parish, was an educator and a pharmacist. She served at Christ Hospital, Oak Lawn; in other Illinois locations; and in Michigan, Florida, Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. She is a pastoral associate at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Orland Park.

SISTER PATRICIA ANN MCKEE, from Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, was an educator at St. Michael, Orland Park for 36 years; St. Cletus, LaGrange; Blessed Sacrament-Aquinas Literacy Center; and in Michigan and Florida. She is a volunteer at Aquinas Literacy Center (35th Street & Hermitage Avenue).

SISTER MARGARET ANN ROGGENBUCK was a teacher and administrator at Santa Maria del Popolo, Mundelein; Our Lady of Knock, Calumet City; St. Edmund, Oak Park; St. Kilian; and St. Philip Neri. She is retired at the Dominican Life Center, Adrian, Mich., and does prayer support for the congregation.

SISTER JANICE SCHOLL, from St. Thomas of Canterbury Parish, ministered in education, in service to her congregation and in medical records. She served in the western United States and now volunteers in Henderson, Nev.

SISTER JOYCE (FRANCIS BERNE) CAULFIELD, from St. Rita Parish, worked in education and prison chaplaincy. She served in Ohio and New York and spent 17 years working in a correctional facility for young male adults in Puerto Rico and 20 years as a supervisory chaplain at a prison for male and female residents there.

SISTER VIRGINA DEVER, from St. Edward Parish, taught high school drama and speech. SISTER CLARICE KNIERY was a teacher, principal and administrator and was the founding program director of Hessed House. SISTER MARY NONA McGREAL, from Immaculate Conception Parish, Waukegan, worked in teaching, administration, writing and the dissemination of the history of the Dominican Order in the United States and of the Venerable Samuel Mazzuchelli, who founded the order. She served at St. Brendan College; St. Thomas the Apostle and Project OPUS regarding her order. SISTER VERONICA (ROSINE) HIGGINS, from St. Bartholomew Parish, has been an educator, pastoral minister and chaplain. SISTER CORINNE BAUER, a Chicago native, was a biology teacher in the Milwaukee, Chicago and Peoria dioceses. In the late 1960s, she transferred to health care, where she became a lab technician. She worked 20 years at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center. She lives in Aurora.

SISTER EVANGELINE McSLOY, a Chicago native, was a formation director and ministered in teaching, music and parish ministry, where she worked in three African- American parishes. She is retired in Chicago.

SISTER MARGARET MARY MOLONEY, a Chicago native, authored five books and served as a dean, professor and director of nursing schools. She is retired in Naperville, Ill.

SISTER HELEN WEINFURTER was a professor of American literature at St. Xavier University for 30 years. Before teaching college, she taught at St. Catherine of Siena, Oak Park; St. Mary of the Lake; and St. Gabriel; as well as in Seneca, Ill., and Milwaukee.

70 YEARS

SISTER MARY FEARON, a native of Chicago, is an author and is now serving in the ministry of prayer. She taught throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago for 20 years, as well as in the dioceses of Peoria and Davenport, Iowa. In 1967, she was called to serve in the Chicago archdiocese, and she wrote several religious education books that continue to be used.

SISTER RENEE HUMBLE served as director of nursing, administrator, assistant professor and director at Mercy hospitals in Chicago and Aurora, Ill. In the early 1990s, she was certified as a counselor. She then served as a pastoral associate and spiritual director in Aurora.

SISTER LUCIA LIETSCH taught elementary school for 45 years in the archdioceses of Chicago and Milwaukee and the dioceses of Peoria, Rockford and Joliet, Ill.; Davenport, Iowa; and Madison, Wis. After retiring from teaching in 1991, she continued to serve as a tutor until 2006.

SISTER MAURA LOWREY taught grades one through five in the Archdiocese of Chicago as well as the dioceses of Davenport, Iowa; Peoria, Ill.; and Madison, Wis. She transferred to healthcare, serving on the dietary staff of local Mercy hospitals and as a radiologic technologist for almost 10 years in Davenport, Iowa; Detroit; and Chicago. She then served as a sacristan for many years. Now she volunteers at Mother McAuley High School.

SISTER KATHLEEN McDONOUGH was a teacher, first elementary and then art, for more than 40 years. She served in the archdioceses of Chicago and Milwaukee. She worked at Miscercordia as a member of the professional staff for more than 15 years.

SISTER RITA MOONEY taught elementary grades in the Chicago and Madison, Wis., dioceses for almost 25 years. She became a registered nurse and served at several Mercy hospitals in the Chicago area, spending the majority of her time at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center as a clinical nurse for almost 20 years. She then served as a volunteer at the hospital until the early 2000s.

SISTER MARITA SHAUGHNESSY, a native of Chicago, taught for almost 50 years in the Chicago; Madison, Wis.; and Davenport, Iowa dioceses. Upon retiring from teaching, she served as support staff and was a substitute teacher at Mother McAuley High School for more than 10 years.

SISTER NANCY CAHILL is a part-time professor of education at St. Xavier University, where she has worked for nearly 40 years. Prior to teaching at the college level, she served as a teacher in the Chicago archdiocese and was a principal in Milwaukee.

SISTER VIRGENA CLARK taught primary grades and First Communion classes in the archdioceses of Chicago and Milwaukee and the Diocese of Rockford. She taught religious education in Wisconsin.

SISTER CAROL GUSSY, a native of Chicago, was a teacher for more than 40 years in the Chicago archdiocese, except for two years when she served in Davenport, Iowa. Upon retiring from full-time teaching, she continued teaching part-time at St. Angela School for almost 10 years.

SISTER MARY HANNON, a native of Chicago, taught in the Archdiocese of Chicago for almost 30 years, including at Mother McAuley High School. In the mid- 1980s, she took up caregiving as her primary ministry and relocated to Tennessee. She serves as a hospital volunteer at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga.

SISTER MARISE KESSLER is a volunteer at St. Angela School. She is a native of Chicago and has served in both education and healthcare. She taught for 10 years in Illinois and then worked in Chicago hospitals for almost 20 years as an x-ray technician and as director of the school of radiology. She also served as a supervisor at Misericordia Homes for more than 20 years.

SISTER SHEILA LYNE, a native of Chicago, retired May 31 as president and CEO of Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago after having served in this position for 13 consecutive years and 15 years prior. In between her years of service to the hospital, she served as commissioner for the Chicago Department of Health and was a team member of the Chicago Community’s Regional Leadership Team.

SISTER LENORE MULVIHILL, a native of Chicago, has been a volunteer and board member at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center for the past 13 years. She has served the hospital in several capacities since 1976. She was first director of the diagnostic/treatment center and was then appointed vice. After briefly retiring in the early 1990s, she returned to the hospital by working full-time as support staff from 1995 until 2000.

SISTER MARY SHEEHAN taught at Mother McAuley High School in the late 1950s and returned almost 35 years later to serve as operations assistant. In between, she served as a psychologist and administrator. She also taught philosophy at St. Xavier University in the 1960s. She is a native of Chicago.

SISTER MARGARET WRIGHT, a native of Chicago, has been a pharmacy consultant since 1998. Previously, she worked at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center for 20 years and in Aurora for six years. She has also served at the Illinois Department of Public Aid.

SISTER MARION CYPSER has been principal of St. Catherine-St. Lucy School, Oak Park, since 1978. Prior, she was principal at Little Flower and was co-principal at Resurrection. She has also taught at St. Joseph, Libertyville, and St. Raymond de Penafort, Mount Prospect.

SISTER CARLOTTA OBERZUT, a Chicago native, is a counselor/administrative assistant at St. Martin de Porres House of Hope. She served on the Sisters of Mercy Regional Community of Chicago Leadership Team. Prior to serving in leadership, she ministered in pastoral counseling, parish ministry and was a teacher.

SISTER ROSE WIOREK is a transcription editor for higher education. Before that she served as principal at Mother McAuley High School for 10 years, after having served as dean for 17 years. She was a formation minister during the 1970s, first at the regional level and then at the national level. She began her ministry work as a guidance counselor at Mother McAuley.

SISTER DOLORES ZUREK, a native of Chicago, has worked in education and healthcare. She’s been a health benefits coordinator for 13 years. In this capacity, she works in sister support services for the Chicago-area sisters of the Sisters of Mercy West Midwest Community.

SISTER MAUREEN BROGAN was a teacher and reading consultant. She served at St. Peter Canisius; DePaul University’s Teachers Clinic/Learning Disabled and was a supervisor of its student teachers. SISTER MARY BUCKLEY, a Chicago native, was a teacher. She served at Notre Dame High School and is a tutor and volunteer in Cincinnati.

SISTER MARY LOU STOFFEL, a Chicago native, has been a teacher and school administrator. She worked at St. Robert Bellarmine for 11 years and teaches remedial reading for students at St. Ferdinand School.

SISTER MARY LOYOLA RESZKA worked in education and community service and served on the provincial council as superior and novice directress. She served at St. Casimir, St. Thecla, St. Mary of the Angels, Resurrection College Prep High School and in Florida. She is her Resurrection community’s provincial archivist.

She served at Holy Cross, River Grove; Madonna High School; at the Provincialate, Berwyn; Marillac High School; Presentation Continuing Education Center; Queen of Peace, Burbank; Academy of Our Lady; St. Alphonsus; and in Wisconsin. She now is a bookkeeper in North Riverside.

50 YEARS

SISTER LUPITA MARIE CORDERO, a Blue Island native, worked in education and administration. She served at St. Stanislaus Kostka; St. Ambrose; St. Kevin; St. Procopius; Our Lady of Vilna; St. Michael; Caroline Community and Corazon a Corazon, where she is an ESL coordinator.

SISTER CATHERINE SARTHER was an educator, administrator, researcher and congregational leader. She served at the Provincialate, Berwyn; University of Chicago; in Chicago Public Schools; Academy of Our Lady; St. Michael; St. John De La Salle; at the Generalate, Rome; and in Wisconsin. She is the assistant to the Dean of Advising, Notre Dame of Maryland University.

25 YEARS

SISTER ARLENE GIBSON was a business manager and administrator. She served at St. Leonard’s Ministries; Horizon Hospice; St. Benedict Home, Niles; Queen of Peace High School, Burbank; and St. Rosalie Covent, Harwood Heights. She is the finance director for the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
