Each year, the Archdiocese of Chicago grants two kinds of awards to lay men and women for their dedication to the church and its ministries. They are the Bishop Quarter and Christifideles awards and were given by Cardinal George Nov. 4 at Holy Name Cathedral. This year’s recipients are:

Bishop Quarter Awards

The Bishop Quarter Award, named for Bishop William Quarter, the first bishop of Chicago, is given each year to one layperson or married couple in each vicariate who demonstrates consistent service to the ministries of the archdiocese’s vicariates. Episcopal vicars nominate recipients.

This following people received this year’s awards:

Vicariate I: Joan O’Keefe, Church of St. Mary, Lake Forest. O’Keefe has spent most of her life in the fields of religious education, adult faith formation and RCIA and as a pastoral associate. While living in Cincinnati in 1974, she was appointed by then- Archbishop Bernardin to the U.S. Bishops’ commission to draft the national standards for religious education. She worked in religious education and as a pastoral associate at St. Norbert, Northbrook; St. Julian Eymard, Elk Grove Village; and the Church of St. Mary, which has been her parish for almost 20 years. She founded or helped found the Ministry Commission in Lake County and the Pastoral Associates Council in the archdiocese.

Vicariate II: School Sister of St. Francis Paulanne Held, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Glenview. Sister Paulanne has been a School Sister of St. Francis for more than 50 years, all at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. She has been a teacher in the school and sacristan for all parish liturgies, and has cared for the poor and the needy. For more than 30 years, she has spearheaded the parish’s Sharing Program and outreach. OLPH assists four parishes through sharing food, produce, clothing and funding, as well as building bridges among people of different racial and economic groups. For many years, she also has overseen the Needy Family Fund, which assists families and individuals facing unemployment, foreclosure and catastrophic illness.

Vicariate III: Libia Paez-Howard, Good Shepherd. As the Vicariate III catechetical coordinator, Paez-Howard has shown a passion for Christ’s teaching in catechesis. She has been involved in catechetical leadership since 1991, and serves on the representative council of the National Conference for Catechetical Leadership and on the conference’s Forum for Hispanic Catechesis. She has master’s degrees in pastoral studies and divinity from Catholic Theological Union and was the first Hispanic woman to graduate with a master’s degree from CTU’s Oscar Romero program. She and her husband, Tom Howard, have three children, one is a teacher and two are in college.

Vicariate IV: Dalia Rocotello, St. Mary, Riverside. Rocotello, director of Latino Affairs for Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago, is committed to giving service. She has inspired many people at her parish through the service outreach committee, and has helped the director of religious education develop a program of service opportunities for confirmation candidates. She is on the board of Amate House, a full-time volunteer program for young adults. The daughter of Venezuelan immigrants, Rocotello is bi-lingual and has a strong understanding and appreciation of the Latino immigrant experience, and she spent six months in Mexico in a religious community serving migrant workers. She volunteered with MacNeal Hospice, providing respite care for families of the dying.

Vicariate V: Betty Slad, St. Patrick, Lemont. Slad is a member of the choir, guitar ensemble and family choir; is coordinator of the annual golf outing and parish hospitality events, in addition to serving as lector and member of the parish council.
