Jimmy M. Lago, who has served as chancellor for the Archdiocese of Chicago since 2000, has been reappointed to this position in a part-time capacity for a renewable one-year term. The appointment was made by Cardinal George. The position of moderator of the curia will be reestablished and will be assigned most of the responsibilities currently held by the chancellor. In the role of chancellor, Lago will retain a number of his current responsibilities. The appointment is effective July 1, 2012. “I am grateful to Jimmy Lago for his personal advice and for the expertise he has brought to his role in archdiocesan governance during the past 12 years he has served all of us and the church,” said Cardinal George. In his newly defined position, Lago will be in charge of the oversight and monitoring of archdiocesan compliance with the Charter and Norms for the Protection of Children and Young People. He will also represent the archdiocese concerning public policy issues with the Chicago City Council and Cook County Board. He will continue to oversee the vice-chancellor for the Cardinal Bernardin Archives and Records Center. In his redefined role as Chancellor, Lago will have oversight of Liturgy Training Publications (LTP), Food Service Professionals and Ceres, a nonprofit archdiocesan agency serving meals daily to Catholic schools, residential facilities and health care institutions. Lago holds a masters in social work from the University of Illinois in Chicago and an MBA from Loyola University Chicago. He served for over 20 years representing the bishops of Illinois to the Illinois legislature on a range of critical issues, especially those affecting Catholic Charities. He was appointed chancellor of the Archdiocese of Chicago in 2000. In 2006, Cardinal George charged Lago with the responsibility of making sure that all elements of a safe environment were in place in any archdiocese facility, program or event. Lago and his wife Maria reside in Berwyn with their twin sons, and are members of Ascension Parish in Oak Park.
