In 1981, a group of leaders from the South and West sides of Chicago began meeting to discuss the needs and concerns of the black Catholic community here. Several years later, Chicago had a black auxiliary bishop — Wilton Gregory being the first — and later an Office for Black Catholics.

The office has several goals including to serve as a vehicle to provide spiritual, cultural and social nourishment for black Catholics and provide an equal voice and representation at the decision-making level.

A week of activities of “Faith, Family, Future,” is planned to celebrate the silver anniversary of the Office for Black Catholics. The events are:

  • Oct. 24, 3 p.m., opening Mass and reception with Bishop Joseph Perry at St. Ailbe Church, 9015 S. Harper Ave.
  • Oct. 25, 7 p.m., a revival with speaker Dominican Father Paul Whittington at St. John de la Salle Church, 10205 S. Martin Luther King Drive, food and fellowship at 6 p.m.
  • Oct. 27, 7 p.m., choir concert with speaker Sister Anita Baird, DHM, at Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica, 3111 W. Jackson Blvd., food and fellowship at 6 p.m.
  • Oct. 29, Youth and Young Adult Day with speaker Jesuit Father Anthony Bozeman of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, at Seton Academy in South Holland, food and fellowship at 6 p.m.
  • Oct. 31, 3 p.m., closing Mass and reception with celebrant Cardinal George at St. Jude the Apostle Church, South Holland. For information contact the Office for Black Catholics at (312) 534-8376, e-mail [email protected] or visit www.blackcatholicchicago.org.
