St. Pat’s player dons pink for mom

Moments before St. Patrick High School’s kickoff with St. Viator for the Sept. 24 sophomore homecoming game, St. Pat’s wide receiver and kick returner Patrick Gill donned a colorful addition to his uniform — two pink and white receiving gloves.

Symbolizing breast cancer awareness for most, the gloves meant much more to Patrick. Only days earlier his family learned his mother tested positive for breast cancer and would begin treatments to fight the disease.

“He shocked me when he did it,” said his mother, Colleen, who has been given a favorable outlook. “Before the game he was out there practicing and then all of a sudden the game started and he went to his bag and out popped the pink gloves.”

The Shamrocks won that game 34-6 and they haven’t lost to an opponent since. Patrick’s older brother, Colgan, a junior wide receiver for the Shamrocks followed suit and sported a pair of the gloves himself for the following game.

The boys are two of five children in the Gill family — five children Joe and Colleen Gill feel blessed to have.

“They have all been great and very, very supportive,” said Colleen. “I feel very proud.”

The Gills are parishioners at Queen of All Saints Parish on the Northwest Side. Both Patrick and Colgan are alums of Queen of All Saints Grammar School.
