The women and men recognized on the following pages have dedicated their lives to ministering to the people of God, educating generations of Catholic children, serving in hospitals and nursing homes and staffing parishes in cities and rural areas throughout the United States. Several have traveled further afield, taking the Word of God around the world as missionaries. This is the first of two annual special issues of the Catholic New World that honors religious men and women – sisters, brothers and priests belonging to religious congregations – celebrating special anniversaries. This issue focuses on those who have served for 60 or more years. In October, another issue will focus on those celebrating anniversaries of 25 and 50 years. She lives in retirement at St. Scholastica, where she assists with mailings. 70 YEARS SISTER AMY CAMPBELL served in elementary education. She served at St. Hilary, St. John Nepomucene and Mother of God, Waukegan. She now lives in retirement in Denver. 60 YEARS SISTER CALLISTA KALEY, from St. Timothy Parish, worked in education, predominantly in music. She served at St. Scholastica Academy, Queen of All Saints, St. Hilary and St. Lambert, Skokie. She is semi-retired, lives at St. Scholastica and serves as a piano teacher, community organist and choir director. SISTER JOAN HENTGES worked in elementary education. She served at St. Symphorosa, Queen of All Saints and St. John Nepomucene. She now lives in Mitchell, S.D. Cenacle Sisters 70 YEARS SISTER MARTINA LAUMANN was a spiritual director, coordinator of ministry and community leader who served as local superior and provincial. She also did retreat work. She is retired but still does retreat service in the dining room and vestiary and lives at the Resurrection Life Center. Sisters of Christian Charity 80 YEARS SISTER DE LOURDES BRAGG taught from elementary school to college. She taught art to adults at Mallinckrodt College and Loyola University and many other subjects to students in Missouri and Louisiana. She now teaches one art class per week to a small group of adults at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette. SISTER M. TERESILDA DALEIDEN, from St. Gregory the Great Parish, taught from elementary school to college and was an adult education instructor with ESL classes. She served at St. Aloysius, Josephinum High School and Mallinckrodt College and Loyola University, Wilmette, and in Iowa, Missouri, Michigan, Minnesota and Ohio. She now lives in retirement at Sacred Heart Convent. 75 YEARS SISTER M. MADELINE PORTNER was a teacher and her community’s superior, convent treasurer and librarian. She served at Josephinum High School and Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette, and in Michigan, Minnesota, Louisiana, Iowa and Missouri. She now lives at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette. SISTER MARY SAKOWSKI, from St. Mary of the Angels Parish, was a teacher, development director, organist, annalist, publication liaison and letter writer. She served at St. Raphael, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Gregory, Mallinckrodt College and in Louisiana, Missouri and Michigan. She now does prayerful presence ministry at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette. 70 YEARS SISTER MYRA BELTZ, from St. Boniface Parish, was a teacher, principal and local community administrator. She now lives at the Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette where she does assorted duties. 65 YEARS SISTER DOROTHY IVORY was an elementary school teacher, religious education coordinator and parish minister. She served at St. Gregory; St. Aloysius; St. Joseph, Wilmette; in Clarendon Hills, Ill.; and in Minnesota, Louisiana and Michigan. She now lives at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette where she works as a part-time receptionist. SISTER M. JUDITH MORAN was an elementary and high school teacher, college instructor, principal and formation worker and served in several community leadership roles. She was a member of the commission working on revision of the congregation’s constitution and worked at St. Raphael; St. Teresa of Avila; St. Martha, Morton Grove; St. Alphonsus, Prospect Heights; and St. Mary, Riverdale. She now is the general councilor to the superior general at the Sisters of Christian Charity Generalate, Rome. Sisters of Sts. Cyril and Methodius 80 YEARS SISTER M. FRANCESCA FERKO ministered teaching and services to the elderly. She served in the archdiocese at St. Simon, in other Illinois cities and towns and in Pennsylvania, Indiana, New York and Connecticut. She now lives in retirement in Danville, Pa., where she ministers in prayer and presence. 60 YEARS SISTER M. NOEL STASKO was a teacher and administrator. She served at the archdiocese’s St. Simon, in other Illinois cities and towns and in Pennsylvania, Indiana, New York and New Jersey. She now is the director of special projects at Marywood University, Scranton, Pa. Adrian Dominicans 70 YEARS SISTER MARY FRANCES COLEMAN, from St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish, was a high school and university teacher and did catechetical work and did peace and justice advocacy. She served at Aquinas High School; Eighth Day Center; Marine Drive Apartments on the Southeast Side, where she did catechetical work; and in Florida and the Dominican Republic. She lives in retirement at the Dominican Life Center Adrian, Mich. 60 YEARS SISTER NOREEN BURKE worked as a teacher, principal and high school counselor. She served for 51 years at Chicago area schools and also worked in Joliet, Ill. She now serves her congregation and lives in Oak Lawn. SISTER CAROL JOHANNES, from Queen of Angels Parish, worked in teaching, ministry to her congregation and spiritual direction. She served at Ascension, Harvey; Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette; and in California, Nevada and Michigan, where she now does spiritual direction and retreat work in Ann Arbor. SISTER STELLA JOSEPH (KATHLEEN) SUTHERLAND ministered in teaching and pastoral care. She served at St. Laurence; Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette; and Rosary House High School. She now is living and volunteering in the Phoenix area. SISTER JANVIER WILLIAMS, from St. Elizabeth Parish, was a teacher and school administrator. PASULETTA OVERBACK taught; was a pioneer in her work in religious adult education and pastoral care; was the first sister in her community to minister as a director of religious education; and served as the congregation’s director of health and secretary for Illinois Church Action on Alcohol and Addiction Problems. She served at St. Joseph and in Springfield and Crystal Lake, Ill. 60 YEARS SISTER M. CAROLYN ENGLUM was a teacher, musician and liturgist. She served in Aurora, Bradley and in Springfield, Ill., where she also has served as a liturgist for Sacred Heart Convent, motherhouse of the Dominican sisters. SISTER M. ROSELITA HOLTHAUS worked in elementary education and pastoral care, ministering to the elderly. SISTER MARY MARTIN KILANSKI taught at the elementary level for 13 years, was a missionary in France for six years and ministered to the elderly for 20 years. ALVERNIA GROSZEK, from St. Pancratius Parish, was a teacher, school administrator and community leader. She served at Five Holy Martyrs, Madonna High School and St. Pancratius and was executive director of the Mother Theresa League, helping to move forward the cause of beatification of her community’s foundress, Venerable Mary Theresa Dudzik. She lives in retirement in Chicago. SISTER M. DULCISSIMA KACZMAREK served in administration, community service, caring for the aged, clerical duties and domestic work.
