Cardinal George in memoriam: A friend of dignitaries and popes

Cardinal George received the rarely bestowed Medal of Merit, the City of Chicago's highest honor, at the City Council meeting on Dec. 10, 2014, at City Hall. Mayor Rahm Emanuel presented the award to the cardinal followed by a standing ovation by politicians. Past recipients of the medal include James Hickey, a Chicagoan honored in 2004 for his role as an Army officer in the capture of Saddam Hussein. In 1999, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, the Rev. James Meeks and then-U.S. Rep. Rod Blagojevich received the medal for their efforts to free three U.S. servicemen being held captive by the former Yugoslavia. (Karen Callaway/Catholic New World)

Cardinal George joined Orthodox Church leaders for the national observance of the 75th anniversary of the Ukrainian Genocide Holodomor. The event began with a procession down Dearborn Street to Superior Street and concluded with a requiem service at Holy Name Cathedral on Nov. 15, 2008. The observance aimed to raise awareness of the man-made famine that claimed 10 million victims in Ukraine in 1932-1933.
