Each year, the Archdiocese of Chicago grants two kinds of awards to lay men and women for their dedication to the church and its ministries. The Bishop Quarter and Christifideles awards were conferred on Oct. 23 at Holy Name Cathedral. Recipients are:

The Bishop Quarter Award, named for Bishop William Quarter, the first bishop of Chicago, is given each year to a layperson or married couple in each vicariate who demonstrates consistent service to the ministries of the archdiocese’s vicariates. Episcopal vicars nominate recipients.

Vicariate I: Sandy DiCaro, Megan Palm and Rebekah Stathakis, St. Raymond de Penafort, Mount Prospect

In August 2012, as another season of Theology on Tap came to a close, new friends lamented that there would be no more such events for young adults until the following summer. Not wanting to lose momentum, they formed a small group that met weekly at Santa Maria del Popolo and this providential undertaking sowed the seeds of networking and enthusiasm to address the spiritual needs of a much larger audience.

Connecting with parish-based ministries at Holy Family, St. Paul the Apostle, Our Lady of Humility, St. Mary of Vernon and St. Gilbert, the organizers created what no single parish could provide: a full-time ministry for all Vicariate I Catholics ages 18 to 39.

These volunteers serve more than 100 of their peers through spiritual and social events.

Vicariate II: Ann McCormick, Queen of Angels, 4412 N. Western Ave.
Ann McCormick lives the corporal and spiritual works of mercy through her service to the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Chicago where she serves as a board member and district president.

This past winter, McCormick was instrumental in opening the  society’s Pope Francis Center in the Avondale neighborhood. This center provides social services to  those in need by ending “poverty through systemic change by helping our brothers and sisters who live on the fringe of society help themselves whenever possible and teach them how to forge and change their own destinies and that of their local communities.”

McCormick’s desire to raise up others from poverty is rooted in her faith and lived-out in her vocations, both professionally and in family life. She has a masters of science in nursing and works as a family nurse practitioner. She and her husband, Sean Heath have four children.

Vicariate III: Lina Ruiz, Holy Innocents, 743 N. Armour St.

Lina Ruiz serves as Holy Innocent’s director of religious education and as parish secretary. As a true guadalupana she mothers many families in need of love and care. Furthermore her ministry and generosity in the Vicariate III commission motivates the team to keep moving forward.

Vicariate IV: Rich Daniels,  Most Holy Redeemer, Evergreen Park

For many years, Rich Daniels, leader of the City Light Orchestra, has been generous in sharing his talent with the Archdiocese of Chicago. Daniels is a lifelong Catholic who lives in Evergreen Park with Kathy. The couple has been married for nearly 30 years and have four children.
Daniels grew up in St. Thomas More Parish (2825 W. 81st St. ) and attended Brother Rice High School and DePaul University.

In 1974, together with two fellow students at Quigley South High School, he formed the band that is now the City Light Orchestra. Daniels and the orchestra travel the country playing songs by the likes of Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Garth Brooks, Ray Charles and others. He is currently the musical supervisor for the hit TV series “Empire.”

Daniels freqently performs at archdiocesan events such as the  annual Christmas Concert at Holy Family Parish. Aside from being a saxophonist, writer, arranger and businessman, he is a dedicated Catholic, who has been involved in a variety of events with the Peace and Justice Office, particularly concerning the rights of workers and immigrants. He is a past board member at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.

Vicariate V: Terri O’Neill-Borders, St. Partick, Lemont
As chaplain to the Lemont Police Department, Terri O’Neill-Borders ministers to people in very difficult situations. As founder of the nationally recognized Lemont Hope and Friendship Foundation, she provides healing and help for the poor and inspires hundreds to take action as a conduit of mercy.

In her free time, O’Neill-Borders organizes drives to collect  items such as school supplies, bicycles, clothing and prom dresses. She also offers home repair through the Mission Stay Saturdays Program.

Vicariate VI: Marcella Herndon, Ascension-St. Susanna, Harvey

Marcella Herndon has maintained working relationships in a number of parishes, pastoral agencies of the archdiocese along with the Knights and Ladies of St. Peter Claver and the Council of Catholic Women.

The Christifideles Award is given to Catholic laypeople who have, by participating in parish life, demonstrated the personal and ministerial renewal called for by the papal exhortation Christifideles Laici, calling the laity to the “vocation of responsibility for the church’s life springing from the gift and mission of their baptism.” This year’s recipients are listed below.
