Parish Leadership Day will be held Feb. 22 at Guerin College Prep in River Grove. Leadership Day includes almost 70 workshops on issues pertaining to parish life. The event is open to all interested parishioners and lay leaders from around the archdiocese, along with priests, religious and parish staffs. The theme of the day, in conjunction with the Archdiocesan Strategic Pastoral Plan’s focus on the Year of Strong Catholic Parents, is Families Fostering Faith, Prayer and Service. Auxiliary Bishop Francis Kane, the archdiocese’s vicar general, will be the main celebrant at the 4:15 p.m. closing Mass, and Father Matt Foley, pastor of St. James Parish in Arlington Heights, will be the homilist. Foley served as a U.S. Army chaplain and spent about 27 months in four deployments to Afghanistan during his time as chaplain. “Grace Before Meals — Families Fostering Faith, Prayer and Service” is the topic of keynote speaker Father Leo Patalinghug, a parish priest of the Archdiocese of Baltimore and host of Grace Before Meals, an apostolate to strengthen families and communities around the dinner table. Jesuit Father James Gartland, rector of the Blessed Peter Faber Jesuit Community in Boston, will also deliver a keynote address in Spanish on the importance of family. Other keynote speakers include Father Guillermo Campuzano, chaplain and professor at DePaul University, who will speak about the challenges of the Catholic Church in an always-changing world, paying special attention to the role of families in the evangelization process; Father Manny Dorantes, director of public engagement at St. Joseph College Seminary, will discuss the challenges and blessings of using social networking; and Clarissa Aljentera of the Office for Catechesis and Youth Ministry will speak about ways to discover the potential of social media for parishes.
