New cross blessed at anniversary Mass
Surrounded by the Knights of Columbus, Cardinal George blessed a new cross following a Mass on June 3 with parishioners of St. Joseph Parish, 17951 Dixie Hwy. in Homewood. The Mass marked the parish's 100th anniversary. (Karen Callaway / Catholic New World)

Parishioners hold hands during the "Our Father." The origins of St. Joseph Church date back to early January 1912. At that time, Father Armand C. Martin, an associate at St. Louis of France Church on 117th Street in Chicago, approached the Homewood Village Board and requested the use of the village hall meeting room on Sunday mornings so he could say Mass for Homewood's Catholics. The village granted this request, and Father Martin began saying Mass in the village hall on Jan. 14, 1912. (Karen Callaway / Catholic New World)
The choir is silhouetted by a beautiful window in the loft. Cardinal George was the main celebrant at a Mass on June 2 with parishioners of St. Joseph Parish, 17951 Dixie Hwy. in Homewood, in honor of the parish's 100th anniversary. (Karen Callaway / Catholic New World)
