April 2: Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion
This Sunday the liturgy presents us with two Gospel readings. The first is proclaimed during the special entrance rite for Palm Sunday. The second is Matthew’s Passion narrative that serves as the Gospel reading for Mass. The contrast between the two readings could not be stronger.
March 26: Fifth Sunday of Lent
The earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria have shown how fragile life is. The herculean efforts to find survivors demonstrates how precious life is. Survivors who were trapped in the rubble of destroyed buildings held on for hours and days, clinging desperately to life. Rescuers worked past the point of exhaustion to extricate them from the rubble of their homes.
March 19: Fourth Sunday of Lent
I never knew what darkness was until I spent a few days camping in the Sinai desert. In cities like Chicago, the night has become day because of the artificial light that bathes our streets, sports venues, businesses and homes.
March 12: Third Sunday of Lent
Moses’ popularity among the enslaved Israelites could not be greater than on the day he led them out of Egypt. It was not long, however, before his popularity was all but gone.
Feb. 19: Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
On Oct. 2, 2006, a mentally ill man entered a one-room schoolhouse in the Amish village of Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, and, after letting the teacher and the boy pupils leave, proceeded to shoot eight young girls, ages 6 to 13, killing five of them and severely wounding the rest. Afterward he took his own life.
March 5: Second Sunday of Lent
Peter and two other disciples with him thought they had seen it all. They witnessed Jesus heal all sorts of people: the blind, the deaf, paralytics, lepers. They saw Jesus expel demons from the possessed, feed thousands of people with a few loaves and two fish. They were with him in the boat when he calmed a storm on the Sea of Galilee. They were astounded as he raised a girl thought to be dead back to life.
Feb. 26: First Sunday of Lent
There are times when we feel pulled in several directions at once. There are family responsibilities, career opportunities, community and church commitments, connections with friends and the desire for time for ourselves. We need to consider all these, especially when making choices about the future.
Feb. 12: Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Sermon on the Mount forms the very heart of the Gospel of Matthew, the Gospel from which our Sunday readings will be drawn throughout this liturgical year. We began hearing this segment of the Gospel with the Beatitudes on Jan. 29 and selections from the sermon will continue to the end of February.
Feb. 5: Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
What would it have been like to hear Jesus preach? The Sermon on the Mount is not the transcript of a single speech or discourse but a collection of Jesus’ sayings that he spoke on a number of different occasions.
Jan. 29: Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Editors’ note: It is with great sadness that we mourn the Nov. 8, 2022, death of Passionist Father Donald Senior, whose Scripture column we were honored to publish over the past six years. As we look for a new Scripture columnist, we will continue reprinting Father Don’s past columns, with the permission of the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ.
