Maryville honors William and Jean O’Neill and Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne M. Burke

Maryville honored William and Jean O’Neill with the 2018 Guardian Medallion Award on April 20.

The O’Neills were honored for their decades-long support of Maryville and, in particular, for their support of Maryville’s Center for Children on Chicago’s Northwest Side.

Maryville also honored Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne M. Burke with the Spirit of Maryville Award. Justice Burke was recognized for her part in enriching the lives of thousands of children as a cofounder of the Special Olympics which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

The Center for Children, which houses Maryville’s Crisis Nursery and Children’s Healthcare Center, is nearing the completion of a $2.5 million reconstruction and expansion project. The Crisis Nursery, a safe haven which offers 24-hour childcare and parental support to families facing crises such as domestic violence and medical emergencies.

The Children’s Healthcare Center provides transitional care for children who are medically fragile and dependent on technology.

“For 23 years, the O’Neills have given generously to Maryville,” said Sister Catherine M. Ryan, O.S.F., Maryville’s executive director. “They have touched the lives of countless children and families.”

The recipient of the Spirit of Maryville Award Illinois Justice Anne M. Burke “opened the doors to sport for thousands of children,” Sister Ryan said. The awards were given at Maryville’s Guardian Medallion Award Gala at Morgan Manufacturing in Chicago.
