This February, Catholics mark both Black History Month and the start of Lent. The following is a list of events organized by archdiocesan offices:

African American Heritage Service

The archdiocese will celebrate the 43rd Annual African American Heritage Prayer Service virtually throughout February in a series of prayer service videos every Friday at 10 a.m. The theme for this year’s prayer services is “We Are Called: Umoja for Black Lives, Justice and Peace.” A link to each service is available at youtube.com/user/CatholicChicago.

Lenten prayers for immigration reform

The archdiocese’s immigration ministry is sponsoring a 40-day campaign to respond to the call of Christ to welcome the stranger (Mt 25:35) through prayer, fasting and action to raise awareness of the need for humane immigration reform. Participants sign up and commit to their choice of prayer, fasting and action and join in a launch prayer gathering via Zoom on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17. A virtual weekly rosary will be held on Wednesdays for the duration of Lent.  For information or to register, visit pvm.archchicago.org/human-dignity-solidarity/immigration-ministry/lenten-campaign.

Materials for children

The Mission Office offers Lenten ideas and materials for students to keep mission in mind during the season. The office encourages students to support the Missionary Childhood Association during Lent and pray in a special way for the children of the missions around the world. On its website are links to Lent-specific activities such as a Lenten Calendar, the Stations of the Cross for Missionary Disciples and a Lenten Missionary Pledge. All are available in English and Spanish.
