Health care is a universal right, not a luxury, Pope Francis says
Health care is not a luxury, it is a right that belongs to everyone, Pope Francis told health care workers.
The healing mandate of the Gospel
Being married to an infectious disease specialist and global epidemiologist meant my experience of lockdown was a full immersion into the intricacies of COVID-19. It’s been a long two years, but thanks to my daily conversation partner I have learned a lot about science, disease, transmission, vaccinations, and healthcare. One thing is crystal clear: we owe an enormous debt of gratitude to those healthcare workers all over the world who never hesitated to do the right thing, even when it required courage, selflessness, tenacity and sacrifice.
In message for World Sick Day, Pope Francis calls for health care for all
Praising those who help the sick and praying for those who are sick, Pope Francis called on Christians to practice what they preach, including by guaranteeing equal access to health care for all people.
Finding peace, love at the bedsides of the ill and dying
There is peace to be found at the bedsides of the dying. There is also love.
Health, immigration advocates oppose rule
Several Catholic hospital and community leaders met Oct. 10 and called on people in their networks to oppose a proposed immigration rule change that would make it harder for immigrants to qualify for permanent resident status, and that could decrease immigrants’ access to health care.
Loyola Medicine opens clinic for end-of-life decision-making
Patients of Loyola Medicine have a new option when it comes to figuring out how to make their wishes known. Starting in 2017, Loyola has offered an Advance Directive Clinic in which an ICU physician who has a master’s degree in bioethics meets with patients and their families to help them fill out a health care power of attorney form.
The Gospel’s healing mandate
“The church doesn’t get a pass from carrying out the healing mandate of the Gospel,” my friend Scott Morris, a doctor, reminds me in no uncertain terms. If we want to be Christ-like, we are called to preach, teach and heal. How many of our faith communities take seriously the healing ministry to which Christians are called?
Catholic hospitals find new ways to perpetuate their mission
Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park this month became the latest Catholic hospital to announce that it will join a larger health care system.
Trump administration expands exemptions on contraceptive mandate
The Trump administration Oct. 6 issued interim rules expanding the exemption to the contraceptive mandate for religious employers, such as the Little Sisters of the Poor, who object on moral grounds to covering contraceptive drugs and devices in their employee health insurance.
Presence Health signs letter of intent with Ascension to join Amita Health
Ascension, the nation’s largest Catholic and non-profit health system, and Presence Health, a leading Catholic health system in Illinois, have signed a non-binding letter of intent for Presence Health to join Ascension and become part of Amita Health, a joint venture of Ascension’s Alexian Brothers Health System and Adventist Midwest Health, which is part of Adventist Health System.
