Women and men religious celebrate jubilees

With this issue, Chicago Catholic salutes the religious men and women who have devoted their lives to serving the people of God. In the following pages, we honor hundreds of teachers, nurses, chaplains and parish priests who have given many years in service of the Lord. Join us in offering them our gratitude.

Women religious

Sisters of St. Agnes

70 years

Sister Cecile Marie Kees was a primary grades teacher, director of religious education and pastoral care. She served at Holy Angels and Unity House, in Decatur, and in New York, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Wisconsin. She is retired.

60 years

Sister Mary Christine Fellerhoff worked in secondary and higher education, administration, general leadership in her religious congregation and spiritual direction and held national office for four years with the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. She served in Chicago as executive director of Unity House; was general councilor of her congregation and served as its leader and general superior before moving to Amory, Mississippi, where she is a pastoral minister and spiritual director.

50 years

Sister Christi Ann Laudolff has worked in secondary and higher education, in congregational ministry as a vocation director and as a finance clerk. She served at St. Scholastica High School and in Wisconsin, New York, Maryland, Arizona and New Mexico. She is a legal assistant with We Are One Family Immigration Project at the U.S./Mexico border in Arizona.

Sister Clare S. Lawlor worked in elementary education and as a psychologist, clinical psychology staff member, associate professor, full professor of psychology and associate dean. She served at St. Nicholas, Evanston, and at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in several administrative capacities, including as director of clinical training doctoral faculty. She is retired.

Benedictine Sisters of Chicago

70 years

Sister Margaret Ann Holtz worked in education and administration. She served at Queen of All Saints, Mother of God, St. Hilary, St. John Nepomucene and St. George. She is retired and lives at St. Scholastica Monastery.

60 years

Sister Marilyn Hattrup worked in education and parish ministry. She served at St. Monica, Our Lady of the Angels, Queen of All Saints, St. Hilary, Mother of God and St. Lambert, Skokie. She is retired.

Sister Judith Murphy, from St. Anthony Parish, has been a teacher, principal and community leader. She served at St. Symphorosa; Queen of All Saints; St. Scholastica High School; Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, where she was the founding principal; and Cristo Rey St. Martin, Waukegan. She is prioress of the Benedictine Sisters of Chicago.

25 years

Sister Margarita Walters, from St. Joseph Parish, Wilmette, worked in administration at St. Scholastica Monastery, where she now lives in retirement.

Sisters of St. Casimir

75 years

Sister M. Elaine Kuizinas worked in education and administration. She served at Nativity BVM; St. Anthony, Cicero; Maria High School; and Holy Cross Hospital; and in New Mexico, Maryland and Pennsylvania. She ministers in prayer and presence at Franciscan Village, Lemont.

60 years

Sister Sylvia Puchoras, from All Saints Parish, worked in education. She served at Nativity BVM; St. Norbert, Northbrook; Immaculate Conception (44th Street); and Sts. Peter and Paul; and in Darien. She ministers in prayer and presence at Franciscan Village, Lemont.

Cenacle Sisters

70 years

Sister Helen Donahoe did spiritual direction and retreat ministry, was a director of religious education, director of temporary professed, and did spiritual formation. She served at the Chicago Cenacle as the full-time provincial coordinator and councilor and in the ministry office. She also worked in Washington, D.C. She ministers in prayer and presence at Villa St. Joseph, Rockville Centre, New York.

60 years

Sister Evelyn Jegen, from St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, was a spiritual director and served in Chicago as provincial superior. She is the spiritual director at her community’s location on Peterson Avenue.

Sister Margaret Lane has done spirituality ministry in spiritual centers, parishes and places of worship in the U.S., Canada, France and Italy, where she has given many retreats on “Praying with Art.” She is liaison for Cenacle Associates in Florida, a certified labyrinth instructor, spiritual director and contemplative presence at Chicago’s Ascension Living Resurrection Village.

Sister Mary Eileen McCabe did spiritual direction and retreat ministry, cared for the elderly and was a sacristan. She now provides contemplative presence in Somerville, Massachusetts.

Daughters of Charityof St. Vincent de Paul

70 years

Sister Dorothy Olinger, from St. Gregory the Great Parish, was a teacher, school administrator and consultant and worked in social and health care ministries. She served at St. Louise de Marillac, Northfield; in Lake Zurich; at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Shrine in Maryland; and in Tennessee and South Carolina. She does ministry of prayer in Evansville, Indiana.

Sisters of Christian Charity

75 years

Sister Caroline Schafer was a teacher, principal and congregational and provincial administrator. She served at St. Gregory; St. Martha, Morton Grove; Holy Trinity; Holy Ghost, South Holland; as administrator, directress of novices, and provincial councilor, all in Wilmette She also was a general councilor in Rome. She is the director of mission effectiveness at Sacred Heart Convent.

70 years

Sister Mary Albert Gensterblum was a homemaker, a group mother at St. Vincent Home for Children, local treasurer, driver and purchaser of small items for sisters. She served at Sacred Heart Convent and St. Joseph Convent, Wilmette, and in Ohio and Missouri. She now is a driver for the sisters and maintains a stockroom of toiletries, notions and small articles of sisters’ clothing.

60 years

Sister Mary Clement Eiden, from St. Martha Parish, Morton Grove, was a teacher, congregational leader on the local and provincial level. She served at St. Theresa, Palatine; Josephinum High School; and was director of development for Mallinckrodt College of the North Shore, Wilmette.  She worked on pastoral ministry at the Lower Brule Sioux Reservation, South Dakota. She is the liaison to the Mallinckrodt Scholars program at Loyola University Chicago, a member of the board of directors of Josephinum Academy of the Sacred Heart and publisher of the SCC publication Bread Broken.

40 years

Sister Anastasia Sanford was a homemaker, librarian, teacher, regional archivist, associate editor of Bread Broken, western region webmaster for her community, development program assistant and writer of sisters’ obituary letters and did computer maintenance. She served at Josephinum High School; Montay College; St. Joseph Convent, Sacred Heart Convent, the Motherhouse, SCC Center and Mallinckrodt College, all in Wilmette. She serves as a regional councilor and regional archivist.

Sisters of Sts. Cyril & Methodius

25 years

Sister Deborah Marie Borneman worked in vocation ministry, congregational leadership, college campus ministry and pastoral care. She served as a live-in volunteer for the Marie Joseph House of Hospitality, Interfaith Committee for Detained Immigrants, and worked in Pennsylvania. She now is director of mission integration for the National Religious Vocation Conference.

Adrian Dominican Sisters

75 years

Sister JoAnn (Marie Bernard) Fleischaker, from Queen of Angels Parish, worked in education as a principal and guidance counselor and did pastoral ministry. She served at St. Clare of Montefalco and Aquinas High School and in Oklahoma. She is retired and does volunteer services.

Sister Janet (Mary Paulette) Persyk worked in education, pastoral ministry and chaplaincy. She served at Resurrection Medical Center and St. Elizabeth Hospital and provided pastoral care to the elderly at Marillac House Social Center. She is retired in Adrian, Michigan.

70 years

Sister Norma (Mary Leander) Dell worked in education, social services, outreach, administration and development. She served at St. Rita of Cascia and Queen of Angels, in Kentucky and in Adrian, Michigan, where she is retired and ministers in prayer and presence.

Sister Arlene (Ann Marita) Kosmatka ministered in education, pastoral care, retreat work, spiritual direction and administration of religious education programs. She served at Maternity BVM and in Michigan, Ohio and Florida.

Sister Frances (Frances Dennine) Madigan, from St. Laurence Parish, was a teacher, principal, parish minister and administrator. She served at Santa Maria del Popolo, Mundelein; St. Killian; St. Laurence; St. Ailbe; and the Chicago Board of Education; in Florida and Michigan; and in at the Adrian Dominican Motherhouse, where she is retired and ministers in prayer and presence.

Sister Mary (Josephus Mary) Hrovat worked in education, administration and development. She served at the Midwest-Upper Midwest Chapter of Adrian Dominican Sisters, Hometown, and the mission of Our Lady of Mercy; and was associate director of development, Adrian Dominican Sisters, Burbank; director of alumnae, Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette; and development associate for SOS Children’s Villages. She is retired in Skokie.

Sister Suzanne (Mary Kellen) Schreiber ministered in art, communications, education and community outreach. She served at St. Denis; St. Joseph, Homewood; Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette; and in Michigan. She now is the coordinator of INAI A Space Apart Art Gallery and Meditation Space, Weber Retreat and Conference Center, Adrian, Michigan.

Sister Marianne (August Mary) Supan was a teacher and pastoral associate. She served at St. Ailbe; St. Denis; St. Clare of Montefalco; Ascension, Harvey; Our Lady of Good Counsel; Our Lady of the Westside; and St. Pius V. She is a pastoral associate at Church of the Holy Spirit, Schaumburg.

25 years

Sister Barbara Kelley served as communications and alumnae coordinator, Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette; and ministered in Alaska and Michigan. She now is communications specialist, writer and editor, for the communications department of the Adrian Dominican Sisters, Adrian, Michigan.

Sister Mary Soher has done communications, campus ministry and vocations ministry. She studied at Catholic Theological Union and served in Florida, Minnesota, California and Michigan. She is mission prioress at Chicago’s Catherine of Siena Mission.

Dominican Sisters of Peace

70 years

Sister Patricia Hennessey worked in education and as the director of religious education, a spiritual director and in formation. She taught at St. John Berchmans School for 11 years. She now ministers in prayer and presence.

Sister Joseph Leo Pietrowski was a teacher, treasurer and secretary to prioresses. She taught at St. John Berchmans School for 11 years. She volunteers and does prayer and presence.

60 years

Sister Rosemary Cina was a teacher, librarian, administrative assistant and congregational archivist. She taught at Our Lady of the Wayside and served as librarian at St. Viator High School, both in Arlington Heights. She ministers in prayer and presence.

Sister Helen O’Sullivan was a teacher, regional coordinator for her congregation and case manager for homeless people. She taught at Our Lady of Peace School and now ministers in prayer and presence

Sister Rosemary Rule was a teacher, congregational leader, vocation director and parent educator. She taught at Our Lady of the Wayside, Arlington Heights, and St. John Berchmans. She ministers as a librarian at Kentucky’s St. Gregory School and does service at Sansbury Health Care Center.

Dominican Sisters of Springfield

60 years

Sister Jane Ann Beckman was a teacher, pastoral minister, literacy educator, congregational leader and coordinator of citizenship programs. She served at St. Walter; Marian Catholic High School, Chicago Heights; and in Aurora, Granite City, Quincy, Hampshire, Assumption and Springfield. She now is the citizenship program coordinator at Dominican Literacy Center, Aurora.

Sister Judith Anne Haase, from St. Martin of Tours Parish, worked in education and school administration, formation, congregational leadership and business. She served at St. Edward; Marian Catholic High School, Chicago Heights; Loyola University Chicago; St. Joseph College Seminary; and University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary; in Springfield and Peoria; and in Louisiana and Iowa. She also worked for the Archdiocese of Chicago’s vocations office. She is the assistant to the archivist and does community support at Sacred Heart Convent, Springfield.

Sister Rosemary McGuire was a teacher who facilitated a program for students with learning difficulties called Effective Learning Solutions. She served at St. Edward; St. Lawrence O’Toole, Matteson; in Richmond, New Lenox, East Alton, Peoria, Decatur, Crystal Lake and Springfield; and in New York, Michigan and Iowa. She does community service at Sacred Heart Convent, Springfield.

Sister Kristin Rever was a teacher, respiratory therapist, parish nurse, pastoral visitor and development coordinator. She served at St. Walter; St. Edward; and St. Lawrence O’Toole, Matteson; in Newton and Springfield; and in Mississippi, Arkansas and Minnesota. She does prayer ministry at Sacred Heart Convent, Springfield.

Sister Rose Miriam Schulte worked in teaching, school administration, counseling, pastoral studies, congregational leadership and as a facilitator for religious-in-training. She served at St. Edward, St. Christina and St. Bernadette, Evergreen Park; in Springfield, Decatur, Godfrey, Edgemont and Madison County; and in Mississippi and Minnesota. She now is the vicaress general for the Dominican Sisters of Springfield while also continuing her ministry as a community facilitator for the oblates.

Sister June Volpe, a Chicago native, was a teacher, administrator, social worker, retreat director and hospital chaplain. She served at Immaculate Conception Parish; in Aurora, Jacksonville, East Alton, East Moline, Quincy, Springfield, Peoria, Bradley and Decatur; and in Lima, Peru, and Bolivia. She does pastoral care at St. Catherine’s Village, Madison, Mississippi.

50 years

Sister M. Geraldine Kemper was a teacher, school administrator, outreach coordinator and facilities manager. She served at Our Lady of Grace and in Aurora, Hampshire, Decatur and Springfield. She is an outreach coordinator at Rosary High School, Aurora.

Sister Catherine Mary Currie, from St. Francis Borgia Parish, was a teacher and school administrator, and she did technology work and support services for school administration and governing boards. She served at St. Edward and St. Bernadette, Evergreen Park, and in Cary, Elgin, Decatur, Aurora and Springfield. She now works in the library and does tech support at Sacred Heart Convent, Springfield.

Sinsinawa Dominicans

75 years

Sister Alban Hermes was a teacher, principal and pastoral minister. She served at St. Brendan; St. Sabina; St. Patrick, Lemont; St. Thomas More; Visitation; St. Mary, Evanston; Our Lady of Knock, Calumet City; in Galena; and in Minnesota, Alabama and Wisconsin, where she now is living in community at the Sinsinawa motherhouse.

70 years

Sister Mariann (Nadine) Franzgrote taught music and art. She served at St. Cajetan, in Rockford and in Iowa and Minnesota. She lives in community in Richfield, Minnesota.

Sister Constance Lennartz, from St. William Parish, was a teacher and parish minister. She served at St. Luke, Lake Forest; in Freeport and DeKalb; and in Iowa, Minnesota, South Carolina, Alabama, Oklahoma and Wisconsin, where she lives in community at St. Elizabeth Manor, Footville.

Sister Catherine (John) Meyering, from St. Catherine of Siena Parish, Oak Park, taught at Trinity High School, River Forest, and in Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin, where she lives in community in Sinsinawa.

60 years

Sister Mary Ann (Marie Richards) Carroll, from Visitation Parish, was a teacher, administrator, provincial team leader and community pastoral minister. She served in New York, Montana, Minnesota and Wisconsin, where she lives in community in the Milwaukee area.

Sister Rosemary (Domenica) Hickmann, from St. Francis Borgia Parish, was an educational administrator and provincial councilor. She served at St. Giles, Oak Park; St. Luke, River Forest; was the assistant superintendent of schools for the Archdiocese of Chicago; and ministered in Florida, Wyoming, Indiana and Wisconsin, where she now lives in community at St. Elizabeth Manor, Footville.

Sister Erica (Caterina) Jordan was a teacher, principal and member of her congregation’s leadership council. She served at St. Giles, Oak Park; St. Pius V; St. Gall; Most Blessed Trinity Academy, Waukegan; in Minnesota and Montana; and in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where she lives in community and volunteers with several organizations.

Sister Sarah Anne (Mary Ansana) Kaminski was a teacher and minister to her congregation. She served at Trinity High School, River Forest; in Bloomington; and in Montana and in Wisconsin, where she lives in community and supports the Community of Welcome, Sinsinawa.

Sister Elizabeth (Erica) Kugi taught and did religious education and pastoral work. She served at Visitation, St. Brendan and St. Pius V and in Washington, Texas, Minnesota, Idaho and Wisconsin, where she lives in community at the Sinsinawa motherhouse.

Sister Joan (Eman) Murray, from St. Theodore Parish, was a teacher and pastoral counselor. She served at St. Barnabas; St. Louis de Montfort, Oak Lawn; and Trinity High School, River Forest; and ministered as a pastoral counselor in private practice. She also worked in Naperville and in Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. She lives in community in Chicago.

Sister Sandra (Mary Rosario) Schmitz, from St. Basil Parish, was a teacher, administrator, parish minister and chaplain. She served at St. Richard and in Pennsylvania, Minnesota, New Jersey, Florida and Wisconsin, where she lives in community at St. Elizabeth Manor, Footville.

Sister Judith (Marie Franz) Seiberlich was an educator and served as a principal. She ministered at Queen of Peace High School, Burbank; Unity Catholic; Maria High School; Cristo Rey-St. Martin de Porres, Waukegan; and Seton Academy, South Holland; in Freeport; and in Minnesota and Wisconsin, where she lives in community in Kenosha and volunteers with several organizations.

Felician Sisters

80 years

Sister Mary Lourdine Lachowski was an elementary school teacher and principal and did Mercy Home phone ministry. She served at St. Helen; St. Joseph; St. Bruno; St. Wenceslaus; Ascension, Evanston; Holy Innocents; St. Linus, Oak Lawn; Our Lady of Ransom; and Mother of Good Counsel; in LaSalle; and in Wisconsin. She now does Sacred Heart enrollment ministry.

Sister Paul Marie (Mary Pulveria) Pietroczynski was an elementary school teacher, principal and tutor, and did Mercy Home phone ministry. She served at St. Bruno; St. Turibius; St. Bronislava; St. Mary Magdalene; St. Hedwig; Our Lady of the Gardens; St. Joseph; Sacred Heart; St. Wenceslaus; Our Lady of Ransom, Niles; Provincial House; Mother of Good Counsel Central Convent; and Our Lady of the Angels; in Peru; and in Alabama, Minnesota and Wisconsin. She now does prayer ministry.

75 years

Sister Mary Elrita Zoromski was an elementary school teacher and principal; Home for Aged support staff member; receptionist; and sacristan. She served at St. Turibius, St. Bruno, St. Mary Magdalene, Mother of Good Counsel and Our Lady of the Angels, and in Minnesota and Wisconsin. She now does prayer ministry.

70 years

Sister Mary Elizabeth Bielamowicz was an elementary school teacher, religious education coordinator and organist and worked in the finance office. She served at Our Lady of the Angels and Mother of Good Counsel; and in Alabama, California, Nebraska, Kansas, Texas and New Mexico. She now does prayer ministry.

Sister Mary Virginia Sztorc, from St. Wenceslaus Parish, was an elementary school teacher and librarian, a member of the Generalate support staff and a medical driver. She served at St. Helen; St. Joseph; St. Turibius; St. John of God; Our Lady of Ransom, Niles; St. Joseph High School; the Provincial House; Mother of Good Counsel; and Marian Care Center; and in Minnesota and at the Generalate, Rome. She now does outreach to the poor.

60 years

Sister Mary Carlotta Myszka was an elementary and high school teacher, director of postulants, assistant director of novices, cashier, director of mission integration and local minister. She served at St. Joseph High School; Good Counsel High School; Mother of Good Counsel; in Downers Grove; and in Wisconsin and Connecticut and at the generalate in Rome. She now does ministry of presence, Felician Village, St. Mary’s Home, Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

50 years

Sister Paula Mary Palasz was a teacher, vocation director, director of postulants, archivist, mission integration coordinator and program director. She served at Good Shepherd; St. Wenceslaus; St. Linus, Oak Lawn; and Mother of Good Counsel; and in Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Mexico and Connecticut. She now ministers in pastoral care, Villa St. Francis, Milwaukee.

Franciscan Sisters of Chicago

75 years

Sister Doloria Kosiek, a Chicago native, worked in education and school administration and was a pastoral minister, was director of religious education and spiritual direction vocation director. She served at Five Holy Martyrs; St. Florian; Madonna High School; St. Stanislaus Bishop & Martyr; St. Pascal; Our Lady of Ransom, Niles; St. Hugh, Lyons; St. Mary of Celle, Berwyn; St. Thecla; Madonna Convent; Triton Community College, Melrose Park; Oakton Community College, Skokie; and the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Office of Catechesis Fostering Faith program; and in Indiana and Ohio. She was the recipient of the Franciscan Federation Peacemaker Award in 2014 and now is retired.

Sister M. Gabriel Lazarski, a Chicago native, worked in education, school administration, religious formation, congregational leadership and as director of religious education, general councilor, apostolate coordinator, retirement coordinator, motherhouse superior, local superior, novice director, director of mission effectiveness and mission integration program and convent treasurer. She served at St. Florian; St. Stanislaus Bishop & Martyr; St. Louise de Marillac, La Grange Park; Five Holy Martyrs; St. Joseph Home, Madonna Convent and at several Indiana locations. She was the recipient of the Franciscan Federation Peacemaker Award in 2014 and now is retired.

70 years

Sister M. Francine Labus, a Chicago native, worked in education, school administration, religious formation, congregational leadership and was an organist and beatification liaison. She served at St. Stanislaus Bishop & Martyr; St. John Cantius; St. Louise de Marillac, La Grange Park; Madonna High School; St. Pancratius; Five Holy Martyrs; Mother Theresa Home and at the motherhouse, Lemont; and in Indiana. She was secretary of the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Principals Association, member of the archdiocesan principal interview team and transcriber of the Mother Theresa Spirituality Manuscript. She also served as formation director for the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago, was mission integration director and served as the community’s general secretary, general councilor, general vicar and local minister. She was the recipient of the Franciscan Weaver Award in 2014 and now is retired.

Sister M. Monica Sendlosky, was a librarian and congregational leader and worked in finance, business and pastoral care. She was general councilor and general secretary for the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago, local minister and treasurer at Madonna Convent and assistant local minister at her congregation’s motherhouse. She also served at Five Holy Martyrs, Madonna High School and St. Joseph Home and at several locations in Indiana and Ohio. Sister Monica was the recipient of the Weaver Award in 2016. She now is an assistant local minister.

60 years

Sister Jean Therese Jarosz was a nursing assistant, ward clerk, sacristan, secretary, infirmary aide and as an assistant to the congregation’s administrative support staff. She served at St. Joseph Home, at the Mother Theresa Home and at the congregation’s motherhouse, Lemont. She now ministers as a sacristan.

Sisters of St. Francis of Clinton, Iowa

70 years

Sister Phyllis Morris was a teacher, principal, director of catechetics, and pastoral and finance coordinator, and she worked in pastoral and diocesan ministry. She served at St. Gerald, Oak Lawn, and in California, Iowa and Oregon. She is retired and runs a volunteer ministry, Franciscan Peace Ceramics, for which she handcrafts ceramic art with designs based on Franciscan spirituality and peacemaking.

60 years

Sister Theresa Judge worked in education and administration and in various college positions. She served at St. Gerald, Oak Lawn, and in Iowa and now is the general secretary of the Sisters of St. Francis.

Sister Anne Martin Phelan worked in education, school administration, congregational leadership and development. She served at St. Francis de Paula and St. Gerald, Oak Lawn; in Iowa and in the Bahamas; and she was president of the Sisters of St. Francis. She now is the religious education coordinator at St. Cajetan Parish.

Sisters of St. Francis of Dubuque, Iowa

70 years

Sister Beverly Eichler taught at St. Mary of the Woods and St. Christopher, Midlothian. She is retired at the motherhouse, Dubuque, Iowa.

Sister Rita Green was a teacher and principal, and she served at St. John Brebeuf, Niles. She is retired at the motherhouse, Dubuque, Iowa.

Sister Mary Klisart taught and did parish ministry. She served at St. Christopher, Midlothian. She is retired at the motherhouse, Dubuque, Iowa.

Sister Clara Streng taught and did parish ministry. She served at Sacred Heart, Melrose Park. She is retired at the motherhouse, Dubuque, Iowa.

Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help

50 years

Sister Mary Kathleen Craig, from St. Gerard Majella Parish, Markham, taught in Archdiocese of Chicago schools for 29 years, including Our Lady of the Ridge, Chicago Ridge; and St. Patricia School, Hickory Hills. She also ministered in Fairview Heights and in Ohio, Louisiana, New Mexico, Indiana and Wisconsin. She now is a volunteer at her community’s administrative building, St. Louis.

25 years

Sister Mary Anne Eckstein, from Our Lady of the Angels Parish, worked in pastoral ministry, business and finance management. She is treasurer general of the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration

60 years

Sister Fran Sulzer has been a teacher, parish minister, spiritual director and psychotherapist. She earned a doctorate in ministry from Catholic Theological Union and completed studies in counseling at the Center for Religion and Psychotherapy. She provides educational presentations and serves as a spiritual director and licensed psychotherapist and ministers at St. Peter’s in the Loop. She also served in Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota.

Sister Mary Evelyn Lamb ministered in health care as a clinical instructor, nurse, assistant director of interfaith caregiving, home health aide and a hospice volunteer and in the EEG department. She served as a nurse at the Alverna Home Nursing Center. She now does ministry of prayer, St. Francis Convent, Springfield.

Sister Bernadine Gutowski, a Cicero native, worked in business, management training and research, purchasing, administration, as an assistant to the chief executive officer of Hospital Sisters Health System, Illinois secretary-treasurer, provincial councilor and superior, and chair of Sisters Living Singly. She served at the Hesburgh Center for Formation, Catholic Theological Union, Institute for Spiritual Leadership, on the Archdiocese of Chicago vocations committee and as a volunteer for Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach. Sister Mary Peter McGinty, a Chicago native, was the first woman to receive a PhD in theology from a U.S. university (Marquette) and the first woman professor of theology at a seminary (University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary). She also taught at Loyola University Chicago and served at St. Francis Xavier, La Grange; St. Leonard, Berwyn; and Nazareth Academy, La Grange Park. Sister Patricia Donnelly was a teacher, childcare worker, computer trainer and office and gift shop manager. She served at St. Viator, St. Joseph Carondelet Child Center and CES Computer Tech and in Missouri, where she is a volunteer at Family Care, Manchester.

Sisters of the Living Word

Sister John (Alice) Boegeman first joined the Sisters of Christian Charity and taught in grade, high school and college for 29 years in Missouri, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan and Illinois. She retired from teaching in 1975, joined the Sisters of the Living Word and began doing woodworking, which she had done prior to entering the convent. She set up shop and made her own designs and replicated them in wood. Her handiwork now adorns the prayer spaces of many of her SLW sisters and friends. She retired and moved back to Minnesota, where she was born.

Sister Joanne Fedewa joined the Sisters of Christian Charity and devoted many years to teaching and serving as a principal. She worked in Arkansas and Michigan. She became a directress and provided leadership for young women joining the Sisters of the Living Word and still does so in her retirement. She now lives at Ascension Living Resurrection Village.

Sister Joanne I. Grib, from St. Gall Parish, was a teacher and principal. She served at St. Roman; St. Barbara; St. Simeon, Bellwood; and Lourdes High School. She is retired and volunteers at St. James, Arlington Heights where she is a lector, extraordinary minister of Communion, Bible studies teacher and mentor for people with developmental disabilities in religious education classes. She is a volunteer at Journeys, the Road Home, a Palatine center for homeless people.

Sister Donna M. Williams spent 40 of her 60 years of ministry working in the Archdiocese of Chicago. She worked in education, formation and community service, particularly working with immigrants. She served at St. Theresa, Palatine; Holy Trinity High School; Mercy Home for Boys and Girls; and the Center on Halsted and she spent time in Arkansas, Hawaii, Missouri, Louisiana and in the Marshall Islands. She returned to Minnesota and now works in a family-owned business.

Sister Christine Baty, a Chicago native who attended St. Athanasius, Evanston and St. Raymond, Mount Prospect, ministered as a certified nurse assistant for 35 years and as a volunteer in Families Forward and with several volunteer ministries in St. James and St. Edna parishes, both in Arlington Heights. In 1994, while a parishioner at St. Cecilia, Mount Prospect, she became acquainted with the Sisters of the Living Word and entered their community in 1997.

She now is the moderator for Immaculata Alumnae Association.

Sister Alice (Alissio) Caulfield, from St. Dorothy Parish, was a teacher, administrator, counselor and pastoral minister. She served at Holy Family Parish, Wright Hall BVM retirement home and residence and now serves on the Sisters Development Network.

Sister Catherine (Michele) Dunn, a Chicago native, worked in education and administration. She served at St. Vincent and in Arizona and for 22 years was president of Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa, where she volunteers as a development officer and advisor.

Sister Patricia L. (Chrysostom) Fitzgerald was an educator, artist and wellness and massage therapist, and she worked in business. She served at St. Mary High School; St. Callistus; St. Joseph; St. Malachy; St. Eulalia, Maywood; and at the Education and Intervention/CAP program, Oak Park; and in California and Missouri. She is retired in Dubuque, Iowa.

Sister Genevieve M. (Leonine) Freund was an educator, pastoral minister and musician. She served at Blessed Sacrament and in Tennessee and Iowa, where she has been a pastoral associate at St. Paul, Davenport, for more than 47 years.

Sister Eileen (Patrick Ellen) Healy was an educator, administrator and pastoral minister. She served at St. Agatha, in her BVM congregation and in Tennessee, California and Washington. She is retired in Dubuque, Iowa, and continues to volunteer in the BVM congregation.

Sister Marjorie (Herberdette) Heidkamp, from Queen of Angels Parish, was an educator, chaplain and pastoral minister. Sister Marcian (Marie Franz) Deisenroth, from St. Mary Parish, Des Plaines; was an administrator, community leader, dietician, food manager and teacher. David Darst Center, Casa Notre Dame Housing, Su Casa, Austin Career Education Center, Little Brothers of the Poor, Mercy Hospital and as a missionary in Peru. Sister Mary Gloriana Bednarski worked in education and pastoral ministry. She did Hispanic pastoral ministry with the Howard Area Sanctuary; was CORE program director at St. Mary of the Lake Parish; served at St. Anne, St. Patrick Academy, St. Gabriel and Mundelein College; and did pastoral ministry at residential homes for the mentally ill and homeless in Chicago.

Sister Mary Ann (Mary Augustine) Bergfeld, from St. Dorothy Parish, worked in education and administration. She served as a tutor with the Courage Program; at the Mercy Residence; was a faculty member at Saint Xavier University; did province administration; and taught at St. Gabriel and St. Monica. She now is a community volunteer.

Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ

Sister Marilyn Haselhorst worked in pastoral ministry, formation, finance, teaching and school administration. She served at St. Augustine High School for 18 years. She is one of the founding Sisters of the Poor Handmaids Mexico Pro-Region, where she is the regional treasurer in Mapachapa, Mexico.

Father Raymond Hannah provided pastoral care, worked as a missionary in Papua New Guinea for 21 years and ministered in the African American community. He served as a pastor in Louisiana, worked in the Mission Office of the Divine Word Western Province in California and taught in Quebec, Canada.  He is retired in Techny.

Father Raymond Hober worked in education and administration and was a missionary in the Philippines. He was treasurer of the Divine Word Mindoro Province and served as vice president/administrative and finance officer for Divine Word College of Calapan while working in the Philippines. Father Martin Padovani was a vocation director and clinical psychologist and provided pastoral care. He is the author of “Healing Wounded Emotions” and “Healing Wounded Relationships”; a speaker on relationships and parenting; and a licensed marriage and family therapist. Father Richard Thibeau worked in education, was a missionary worker in Mexico and ministered in the African American community. He built Our Madonna of the Rosary Medical Center in Oaxaca, Mexico, and provided pastoral care and built parishes in Cuernavaca, Mexico. He taught at Divine Word seminaries in Pennsylvania and in New Jersey, where he also was instrumental in building the Our Lady of the Divine Shepherd Cultural Center. He is retired in Techny.

Father Frank Drzaic was a missionary in Paraguay and did pastoral ministry in the United States. He served in the Chicago area at Holy Trinity Croatian Roman Catholic Church; St. Bronsilava; Our Lady of Charity, Cicero; and Oak Park Hospital, Oak Park; and in California, Texas, Mississippi and Tennessee. He was a member of the formation staff at Chicago’s Divine Word Theologate; adjunct instructor in Old Testament at Catholic Theological Union; member of a research team on refugees and survivors of torture in Africa for the Chicago Center for Global Ministry; and an international biblical coordinator for the Society of the Divine Word. He served in Texas, Ghana, Africa and Rome. He is the novice director in Techny.

Archbishop Michael August Blume worked in education, administration and mission animation and was a diplomatic representative of the Holy See to four countries. He served as the secretary general for the Society of the Divine Word in Rome and was responsible for the refugee section of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerate Peoples. He was appointed apostolic nuncio to Benin and Togo and later to Uganda and Hungary. He also served in Ghana. He is retired in Techny.

Father Michael Hutchins worked in education, administration and pastoral care. He served as rector at Chicago’s Divine Word Theologate; vice provincial of the Divine Word Chicago Province; and rector of the Divine Word Techny Community. He is the longest-serving president of Divine Word College (18 years). He also served in California, Iowa and in the Philippines. He now is at St. Anne, Webster Spring, West Virginia.

Father James Keena was a missionary preacher, parish priest and pastor, college faculty member, prefect of students, provincial vicar and superior of his local community. He served at St. Michael (Cleveland Avenue) and in Michigan, Missouri, Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, New York, Colorado and Mississippi. He is retired at St. Michael and does senior presence.

Father Joseph Robert Fenili did parish and retreat ministry, served as a college faculty member, registrar, academic dean, president and local community superior, and was provincial vicar and a general counsultor in Rome. He served in Chicago at the Seelos House Theological Residence and in Wisconsin, Colorado and Arizona, where he was director of ReVision program at Picture Rocks Retreat House, Cortaro. He is retired and lives at St. Michael (Cleveland Avenue), where he ministers in senior presence.

Father Waldemar Latkowski has been a parish priest and superior of his religious community. He serves at St. Mary of Czestochowa Parish, Cicero, and previously worked in New Jersey.

Father Gregory Fishel worked in Salesian youth ministry and now is a parochial vicar of St. John Bosco and St. James (Fullerton Avenue) parishes. He previously served in Florida, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Louisiana.

Father Andrzej Papiez worked in youth and parish ministry and as a missionary in Peru. He is a parochial vicar at St. John Bosco Parish.

Father Daniel J. Mirabelli a Chicago native, has been an educator, school administrator, business manager and director of development. He served at St. Viator High School, Arlington Heights, and now is a teacher and director of development at Alleman High School, Rock Island.

Father Thomas E. Long worked in teaching, parish ministry, social work, administration, development and as a pastor and parochial vicar. He served at St. Viator Parish; Clerics of St. Viator, Arlington Heights; and in Nevada and California. He does volunteer immigration work and is editor of Viatorian Publications.

Vincentians

50 years

Father Bernard Quinn, from Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica, served in seminary education, parish administration and missionary work as a pastor, parochial vicar, superior, provincial and novice master. He served in California, Louisiana and Africa. He is spiritual director for the Daughters of Charity of the West in California.

Father Paul Sisul worked in higher education. He served at DePaul University and at colleges and seminaries in Missouri and Wisconsin. He is a communications specialist for the Congregation of the Mission Western Province in St. Louis, where he manages video and photography projects.

Father Michael Walsh worked in seminary education and parish administration. He served at DeAndreis Seminary, Lemont, and in California, Missouri and Arkansas. He is parochial vicar of Holy Trinity Church, Texas.

25 years

Father David Nations devoted his religious life to vocations, parish administration, congregational leadership and work with the Vincentian Marian Youth as a regional spiritual director and national priest adviser. He served in many capacities in Chicago and in California, Arkansas and Missouri. He is pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Los Angeles.

Society of the Divine Word

70 years

Father Jack Farley worked in communications and advancement, as assistant mission director in the Divine Word Mission Office; and as director of Divine Word International, Techny. He led the renovation of St. Mary’s Seminary, turning it into Techny Towers Conference and Retreat Center; was editor of Missionary Youth magazine; was a staff member of RENEW International, a parish-based Bible sharing program in 20 countries; and led retreats in Massachusetts. He is retired in Techny.

Father Raymond Hannah provided pastoral care, worked as a missionary in Papua New Guinea for 21 years and ministered in the African American community. He served as a pastor in Louisiana, worked in the Mission Office of the Divine Word Western Province in California and taught in Quebec, Canada.  He is retired in Techny.

Father Raymond Hober worked in education and administration and was a missionary in the Philippines. He was treasurer of the Divine Word Mindoro Province and served as vice president/administrative and finance officer for Divine Word College of Calapan while working in the Philippines. He is retired at Techny.

Father Martin Padovani was a vocation director and clinical psychologist and provided pastoral care. He is the author of “Healing Wounded Emotions” and “Healing Wounded Relationships”; a speaker on relationships and parenting; and a licensed marriage and family therapist. He now is a practicing psychotherapist doing marriage and family counseling.

Father Gerald Theis worked in pastoral care and administration and was a missionary in Papua New Guinea for 52 years. He was education secretary and supervisor of schools for the Archdiocese of Mount Hagen, and vicar general of the archdiocese and chairman of the governing council of Holy Trinity Teachers College. He is retired in Techny.

65 years

Father Robert Fisher worked in pastoral ministry and education and was a missionary in Ghana and in the Philippines. He was an assistant novice director, instructor of theology and liturgy and director of St. Augustine Retreat Center in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi; taught ethics and was a Catholic chaplain at Texas A&M University and served mission parishes in Texas; was a professor of theology and philosophy at Xavier University, New Orleans; and wrote “West African Religious Traditions: Focus on the Akan of Ghana.” He is retired in Techny.

Father Richard Thibeau worked in education, was a missionary worker in Mexico and ministered in the African American community. He built Our Madonna of the Rosary Medical Center in Oaxaca, Mexico, and provided pastoral care and built parishes in Cuernavaca, Mexico. He taught at Divine Word seminaries in Pennsylvania and in New Jersey, where he also was instrumental in building the Our Lady of the Divine Shepherd Cultural Center. He is retired in Techny.

60 years

Brother Matthew (Joseph) Connors worked in youth ministry and prison ministry and did missionary work in the United States. He did food service at Divine Word communities in Massachusetts and New York and was a parish administrator in Clarksville, Mississippi. He did youth ministry in Greenville, Mississippi and founded Sacred Heart Youth Outreach to help at-risk youth, He is retired in Techny.

Father Frank Drzaic was a missionary in Paraguay and did pastoral ministry in the United States. He served in the Chicago area at Holy Trinity Croatian Roman Catholic Church; St. Bronsilava; Our Lady of Charity, Cicero; and Oak Park Hospital, Oak Park; and in California, Texas, Mississippi and Tennessee. He also provided pastoral care, built schools and chapels and started a medical clinic in Paraguay. He is retired in Techny.

Father Robert Mertes, from St. Peter Parish, Skokie, was a missionary in Australia and Japan and worked in publishing. He served as a brother for 15 years; was a bookbinder at Techny’s Mission Press; taught in Wisconsin; and was a chaplain in Pennsylvania and in Maryland in addition to his work in Australia and Japan. He is retired in Techny.

Father William Seifert worked in formation, did missionary service in Papua New Guinea and was an anthropologist. He served as associate novice director in Techny for eight years; was director of the overseas training program for seminarians for 15 years; provided pastoral care; and was vicar general, diocesan administrator and episcopal administrator in Papua New Guinea. He is retired in Techny.

50 years

Father Timothy Lenchak worked in education and administration and ministered in the African American community. He was a member of the formation staff at Chicago’s Divine Word Theologate; adjunct instructor in Old Testament at Catholic Theological Union; member of a research team on refugees and survivors of torture in Africa for the Chicago Center for Global Ministry; and an international biblical coordinator for the Society of the Divine Word. He served in Texas, Ghana, Africa and Rome. He is the novice director in Techny.

Archbishop Michael August Blume worked in education, administration and mission animation and was a diplomatic representative of the Holy See to four countries. He served as the secretary general for the Society of the Divine Word in Rome and was responsible for the refugee section of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerate Peoples. He was appointed apostolic nuncio to Benin and Togo and later to Uganda and Hungary. He also served in Ghana. He is retired in Techny.

Father Michael Hutchins worked in education, administration and pastoral care. He served as rector at Chicago’s Divine Word Theologate; vice provincial of the Divine Word Chicago Province; and rector of the Divine Word Techny Community. He is the longest-serving president of Divine Word College (18 years). He also served in California, Iowa and in the Philippines. He now is at St. Anne, Webster Spring, West Virginia.

Father Mark Schramm was a missionary in Ghana and the Caribbean and worked in education administration. He served as director of ministries for Chicago’s Divine Word Theologate; was director of field education at Catholic Theological Union; and was chair of CTU’s Committee on World Mission. He is director of Miramar Retreat Center in Duxbury, Massachusetts.

Father Roger Schroeder served at Catholic Theological Union and as a missionary in Papua New Guinea. He has been professor of intercultural studies and ministry at CTU since 1990; is a consultant on interculturality and missiology and past president of the American Society of Missiology; and has been international coordinator of the Anthropos Institute since 2007.

40 years

Father Charles Smith from Our Lady of the Gardens Parish, was a missionary in Bolivia and hospital chaplain and ministered in the African American community. He is a founding member of the Bowman Francis Ministry Team; organizational consultant and trainer for numerous nonprofits, community groups, business organizations and city agencies; and chaplain for the federal prison system. He is chaplain at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center, Indianapolis.

Father Mark Weber was a missionary in Ghana, ministered in the African American community and did administration and formation. He has been a staff member for the 8th Day Center for Justice; pastor of St. Anselm; two-time provincial superior and general secretary for formation and education for the Society of the Divine Word Generalate. He is rector of Divine Word Theologate.

25 years

Father Van Thanh Nguyen has been an educator. He is founder and editor of the Journal of Association of Asian/North American Theological Educator and holds the Bishop Francis X. Ford, MM, Chair of Catholic Missiology at Catholic Theological Union; has been program director and department chair of biblical languages and literature at CTU. He is also a professor of New Testament studies.
