The urgency of living authentically
Cardinal Cupich delivered the following homily June 14 at Rate Field in Chicago, during the closing Mass of the archdiocese’s celebration of Pope Leo XIV:

The Catholic imagination is alive and well
Father Andrew Greeley was born in Oak Park and died the year before I came to Chicago. A world-famous priest of this archdiocese, the sociologist and novelist was fascinated by what he called “the Catholic imagination.” By this he meant that Catholics, believing that God is present in the whole of creation, live in an enchanted world of statues and holy water, stained glass and votive candles, rites, hierarchy, religious medals, rosary beads and holy cards.

Bridge builders
Having just returned from Rome for a few days before the inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV, I want to offer some thoughts on my experience in attending the funeral of Pope Francis and in participating in the conclave. Two images come to mind.

Renewing the pro-life mission
Thirty years ago, this past March 25, St. Pope John Paul II blessed the church with his encyclical “Evangelium Vitae.” Marking that anniversary, the Dicastery for Laity, the Family and Life issued an important document “Life Is Always a Good: Initiating Processes for a Pastoral Care of Human Life.”

Seeing others as God sees them
What contribution is the church uniquely qualified to offer the world today, in a moment of great conflict, polarization and division? Cardinal Robert McElroy addressed that and other questions in the homily he delivered at his March 11 installation as the eighth archbishop of Washington, D.C.: “The only effective witness that our church can give to the world is to view every conflict which surrounds us through the eyes of God.” Herein lies the hope the church can give to the world, Cardinal McElroy stated, to “truly help our society to see others more as God sees them: beloved children, brothers and sisters.”

The meaning of ‘today’
Cardinal Cupich delivered the following homily at Holy Name Cathedral during the Feb. 26 Mass of episcopal ordination, where five auxiliary bishops were consecrated for the Archdiocese of Chicago.

‘It could actually cause death’
Over the course of just a few weeks, the new administration suddenly halted foreign aid for 90 days, making dramatic cuts in funding and staff at the U.S. Agency for International Development. This has thrown the network of charities that administers our global humanitarian aid, including those funded by Catholics, into chaos. There is a human cost to acting so precipitously, which is partly why on Feb. 13, a federal judge ordered the administration to restore funding, given the “likelihood of a successful claim that the Executive’s actions violate the Constitution and statutes of the United States.”

Setting the record straight
This week I want to respond to the criticism some political leaders have leveled against the Catholic Church, charging that we are misusing federal funding for refugee settlement and that such ministries prove that the church is more concerned with its “bottom line” rather than the humanitarian service mandated by the Gospel.

Immigration: What is God asking of us?
At the invitation of Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes, archbishop of Mexico City, this month I led a group of pilgrims to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In addition to visiting cultural sites such as the famous Pyramids of Teotihuacan and the Gardens of Xochimilco, we prayed at the tomb of Blessed María Concepción Cabrera Arias de Armida, known as Conchita, and the chapel at Tepeyac, where the apparitions to St. Juan Diego took place.

A new year, a fresh start
Culturally, January is the month of transition. The past is put behind us, as historians chronicle major events of the past year, celebrities are memorialized and record books are closed. At the same time, we begin the first days of a new year by making resolutions and predictions, inaugurating new leadership, and opening new accounting procedures to measure investments and assess taxes. This is the world we live in as we start a new year.
