A look back: New World readers pick favorite players

Cubs catcher Dick Bertell receives his trophy for favorite Cubs player. From left is Len Gabrielson, the New World news editor, Vic Roznovsky, one of the Cubs’ coaching staff and Billy Cowan. Bertell received 1,453 votes.
White Sox player Dave Nicholson shows his trophy with Mary Kathryn Belniak, Susan Belniak and Connie Horobick. The women led the campaign for Nicholson to win favorite White Sox player by New World readers in 1964. He received 1,621 votes.

In anticipation of our 125th anniversary in September, we are taking a look back at stories and features that ran in the newspaper.

For a time in the 1960s, when we were called the New World, we had a robust sports section with its own editor. In that section readers were asked to vote for their favorite White Sox and Cubs player.

The photos at the right appeared under the headline “New World’s favorite players of the year” in the Sept. 25, 1964, issue. It was the second year for the contest.

Much to the surprise of the sports editor, who wrote about it in a previous issue, women responded in droves that year for White Sox player Dave Nicholson.
