In anticipation of our 125th anniversary in September, we are taking a look back at stories and features that ran in the newspaper. For a time in the 1960s, when we were called the New World, we had a robust sports section with its own editor. In that section readers were asked to vote for their favorite White Sox and Cubs player. The photos at the right appeared under the headline “New World’s favorite players of the year” in the Sept. 25, 1964, issue. It was the second year for the contest. Much to the surprise of the sports editor, who wrote about it in a previous issue, women responded in droves that year for White Sox player Dave Nicholson.
