Benedictine Sister Vivian Ivantic first thought of religious life when she was in first grade at Mother of God School in Waukegan, just over 100 years ago.

With this issue, Chicago Catholic salutes and thanks the religious men and women who have devoted their lives to serving the people of God. In the following pages, we honor hundreds of teachers, nurses, chaplains and parish priests who have given anywhere from 25 to 85 years in service of the Lord. BVM Sister Carol Frances (Julia Anna) Jegen, 94, died July 7 in Dubuque, Iowa. She was 94.

Little Sisters of the Poor celebrate 150 years in the US
Members and friends of the Little Sisters of the Poor gathered at St. Joseph's Home in Palatine for a Mass of thanksgiving Aug. 30, 2019, the feast day of St. Jeanne Jugan, the community's founder. They were celebrating the 150th anniversary of the community in the United States.
$28 million distributed to religious orders to care for aging members
Orders of women and men religious received, collectively, $28 million in financial help from the National Religious Retirement Office, the umbrella group that coordinates the annual Retirement Fund for Religious campaign in parishes and dioceses nationwide.

Marian’s Sister Mary Jo using newfound fame to talk about God
Before she was a sister, Sister Mary Jo Sobieck was an athlete. Sister Mary Jo, 50, started playing softball, basketball and volleyball in elementary school, and she was a three-sport athlete all through high school and her first two years of college. She dropped basketball for her final two years, but stuck with softball and volleyball.
Sisters of the Living Word turn to video to get message out
When the Sisters of the Living Word founded their congregation in 1975, they wanted to “read the signs of the times” and meet the needs they saw in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council.
