Little Village parishioners pray for victims of violence
Parishioners from Assumption, Epiphany, Good Shepherd, Our Lady of Tepeyac and St. Roman parishes in Little Village gathered for Mass and a street procession on Nov. 3, 2018, in remembrance of youth lost to gang violence this year. The event was sponsored by Padres Angeles and Imago Dei, two organizations offering support and accompaniment to families in the Little Village community.
Violence prevention director draws inspiration from pope
Last month, the Archdiocese of Chicago announced that former FBI agent Phil Andrew would be its first-ever director of violence prevention initiatives. The position grew out of Cardinal Cupich’s April 2017 announcement of an effort to strengthen the work of current anti-violence programs in parishes and schools and other archdiocesan ministries, such as Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, Catholic Charities and Kolbe House, the archdiocese’s jail ministry.
Local leaders say people must leave comfort zones to build peace
The key to building peaceful communities, speakers at a Catholic Charities event suggested, is to actually live as though everyone in the Chicago area is part of one community.
‘Reality of peace begins with every single one of us’
Hours before Cardinal Cupich joined Father Michael Pfleger and hundreds of others in a peace march in the city’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood, two girls, ages 7 and 13, were shot on a school playground on the South Side. Both were released from the hospital that evening.
The cure for violence in our community is Christ’s peace
During the season of Easter, we celebrate the tremendous opportunities for rebirth and renewal that the Risen Christ brings to us. Our Lenten preparations have re-energized our commitment to our faith, and we begin a new season of grace and a time of joy and thanksgiving. Especially as it coincides with spring and the great “rebirth” of nature, Easter truly is a hopeful, glorious time of year.
Many hundreds turn out for Good Friday Walk for Peace
On Good Friday morning, April 14, many hundreds of people joined Cardinal Cupich in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood for a Walk for Peace. Civic and faith leaders also joined the walk along with members of Chicago’s police and fire departments.
