Pope on Pentecost: Synod is journey in the Spirit, not ‘a parliament’
The Catholic Church’s current Synod of Bishops should not be a “parliament for demanding rights,” but a “journey in accordance with the Spirit,” Pope Francis said.
Pentecost May 23: Breathe, forgive, renew
What could be more essential to life than breathing — or forgiving? Breathing and forgiving: One follows the other. Forgiveness, as Jesus makes clear throughout his earthly ministry, is part of the deal for all who call themselves his disciples.
Anticipating Pentecost: ‘Veni Sancte Spiritus’
The first time I sensed the presence of the Holy Spirit, I was four years old. It was late, much past my bedtime. I’d had a difficult time falling asleep. My room had been invaded by shadows, each growing more and more sinister with the headlights of passing cars.
Pentecost Sunday: Opening ourselves to the blessings of the Spirit
Jesus assured his disciples he would not leave them as orphans; he promised the Father would send another Advocate to be with them always (Jn 14:16-18). That promise was kept on the day of Pentecost, considered the birthday of the church, when Jesus’ followers received the Holy Spirit, and which we celebrate May 20. We who believe are also blessed with the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.
