Lake Zurich parish sends supplies to Tampa, Asheville
On two consecutive weekends in October, members of St. Francis de Sales Parish in Lake Zurich loaded supplies for victims of Hurricanes Milton and Helene, shipping over 40 pallets of water, diapers, garbage bags and other nonperishable items.
Holy Name of Mary: Second church established by Black Catholics
In 1897, Servant of God Father Augustus Tolton established St. Monica Parish as the first parish for Black Catholics in the Archdiocese of Chicago.
For 33 years, Oak Park parish has held Taizé service for peace
On the first Friday of October in 1992, Ascension Church in Oak Park hosted its first Taizé prayer service. Oct. 4 marked the beginning of the monthly service’s 33rd year in the church, when more than 200 people came together to sing, pray and rest in silence.
Churches in South Chicago unite to pray for peace in community
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Immaculate Conception Parish in the South Chicago neighborhood regularly held peace marches to pray for its community. With its march on the evening of Oct. 5, the now united Immaculate Conception-St. Michael Parish joined with nearby Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish to revive the event.
St. Christina parish, school honor first responders at Mass
The community of St. Christina Parish and School celebrated first responders during a Mass Sept. 29, the feast of St. Michael the Archangel, the patron of police, fire and emergency personnel.
Parish provides furniture to those in need for 30 years
Every Saturday morning, a group of dedicated volunteers meets outside a garage on the campus of St. Mary of Vernon Parish in Indian Creek to take part in the Sharing Hands Furniture Ministry that collects donated furniture and delivers it to people in need.

Driveway Masses offer opportunity for evangelization in Tinley Park
On the hot, sunny morning of July 13, about a dozen people from St. Julie Billiart Parish in Tinley Park gathered on the driveway at a parishioner’s home for Mass. It is part of an effort, now in its third year, in which parishioners host Masses in their driveways each Saturday from June through August as a tool for evangelization.
Teens from St. Joseph Parish spend week serving others
Fifty teens from St. Joseph Parish in Libertyville spent the week of July 8-12 serving others in the community through its annual SHINE (St. Joe’s Helping in Neighborhoods Everywhere) summer camp.
Last Mass celebrated at St. Bernadette Church in Evergreen Park
Members of the former St. Bernadette Parish in Evergreen Park bade farewell to the church with a Mass and procession June 30 to their new parish, St. Gianna.
