In a wide-ranging report on immigration Nov. 12, U.S. bishops heard a grim landscape facing immigrants and refugees trying to find shelter in the United States. But they also heard of the wide network of Catholic organizations trying to help, even as they, too, face challenges.
Group launches fast for children in detention centers
Dozens of Chicago-area Catholics were joined by Lutheran, Jewish and Muslim representatives as they all prayed for immigrant children held in U.S. detention centers at the Healing Garden near Holy Family Church, 1080 W. Roosevelt Road, Oct. 16.
Catholics focus on immigrant children with rally, civil disobedience
A few hundred Catholic activists, including dozens of women religious, gathered outside at the foot of the U.S. Capitol July 18 urging politicians to stop its "inhumane treatment" of immigrant children at the border and reminding people of faith to take a stronger stand against current U.S. border policies.
Bishops’ migration chair urges House to pass new bill to protect ‘Dreamers’
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Migration March 15 endorsed the American Dream and Promise Act of 2019, which would provide equal protection and a pathway to citizenship for qualifying “Dreamers” and those covered by the Temporary Protected Status and Deferred Enforced Departure programs.
Pilgrims pray for immigration reform during annual posada
About 200 people gathered in the early morning gloom Dec. 14 at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Building, 101 W. Congress Parkway, to pray once again for comprehensive and compassionate immigration reform.
Gathering calls for immigration policy to recognize human dignity of immigrants
The United States must do a better job of welcoming immigrants and refugees, not because of what they can do for the country but because they are human beings. That was the main message of “You are My Neighbor. Immigration: Who is Affected, Why You Should Care and What You Can Do,” a March 1 gathering hosted by Southside Catholic Peace and Justice and more than 40 faith groups and community organizations at St. Barnabas Church, 10134 S. Hundreds of people packed Our Lady of the Mount Church in Cicero Feb. 25 to pray for “Dreamers,” young people who were brought to the United States illegally when they were children and now want to stay in the only homeland many of them remember.
Dozens of Catholic protestors arrested as they ask Congress to help 'Dreamers'
Dozens of Catholics, including men and women religious, were arrested near the U.S. Capitol Feb. 27 in the rotunda of a Senate building in Washington as they called on lawmakers to help young undocumented adults brought to the U.S. as minors obtain some sort of permanent legal status.
