Vacant rectory sees new life as an emergency shelter
The rectory at the St. Catherine of Siena-St. Lucy church site at 38 N. Austin Blvd. now has a new purpose. Since Jan. 4, it has served as a temporary emergency shelter for men, women and families who need a roof over their heads for a night.
Volunteers make apartments ‘homes’
For the past 17 years, it has been my privilege to help people experiencing homelessness transition to safe, stable housing through Catholic Charities’ Housing Case Management Department in Lake County. Having a place to call home is critical to people leading healthy lives that enable them to live in dignity and reach their fullest potential.
Addressing housing insecurity
For decades, Catholic Charities has joined the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in speaking out about the crisis in affordable housing. Quite simply, wages of low-income workers have not kept pace with the rising cost of housing. That means that individuals and families must spend a greater and greater portion of their income on housing, leaving little for other necessities, let alone savings. That puts low-income households in a very unstable living situation, often being only one medical bill or lost paycheck away from homelessness — and for many, the pandemic brought both.
Students learn about homelessness, take action
A Nov. 22 service day aimed at raising awareness of homelessness inspired Josh Grzeczka, a fifth grader at St. Elizabeth of the Trinity School, 6040 W. Ardmore Ave.
Parishes with PADS programs find new ways to help the homeless
Parishes across the Chicago area had been sheltering homeless people for more than 30 years when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020. Faced with suddenly being unable to accommodate overnight guests, many of them pivoted to providing food instead.
Study shows Catholic Charities call center prevents homelessness
It might seem like common sense: Giving money to people on the brink of becoming homeless, and they are less likely to use homeless shelters.
Keeping the homeless sheltered and safe during COVID-19 spread
Every night of the year, Franciscan Outreach serves 382 men and women at three shelters throughout Chicago. The homeless are one of the most vulnerable populations during the COCID-19 pandemic and trying to keep them healthy and protected has called for new ways to serve them, according to Richard Ducatenzeiler, the non-profit’s executive director.
Group holds Christmas party for the homeless
Over 100 volunteers from Caridades de la Cruz offered food, clothing, showers and haircuts to 125 of the area’s homeless at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Dec. 21, 2019.
Dax House provides home to DePaul University’s housing-insecure students
Dominique Coronel wasn’t a stranger to housing insecurity before he arrived at DePaul University. By the time he was in high school, he was having trouble finding a secure place to live. He lost the care of his parents when he was young, he said, his mother to addiction and his father to incarceration.
Help for the homeless
In the cold winter months, our thoughts often turn to the homeless. A local school group recently asked me what they could collect to help the homeless. My response was warm wool socks, waterproof gloves, hats, scarves and coats and boots designed to withstand extremely cold temperatures.
