Christian beliefs lead to opposition to death penalty, patriarch says
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople is pictured in a file photo praying before a reliquary containing bone shards believed to belong to St. Peter the Apostle in Istanbul. While in Rome for a prayer meeting for peace with Pope Francis, the Orthodox patriarch spoke to Vatican News Oct. 20 about his reading of Pope Francis’ recent encyclical, “Fratelli Tutti, on Fraternity and Social Friendship.” CNS photo/courtesy Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople
The new encyclical's formidable challenge
The social encyclical Pope Francis released in October extends a formidable challenge to us all, the challenge to create "a different culture."
Brothers and sisters
The day the text of Pope Francis’ “Fratelli Tutti” encyclical was released, my husband found an old photo of Caroline and Frank, maybe ages 10 and 8, sitting on the couch together playing Mario Kart.
‘Children of the same earth’
The Lakota phrase “mitakuye oyasin” is often used at the end of a speech by an elder. It simply means, “we are all related, we are all relatives.” It expresses an understanding of human existence as belonging to a people who share a common heritage and destiny.
'Fratelli Tutti': Belief in God as creator of all has practical consequences
Professing faith in God as the creator of all human beings, or even simply recognizing that all people possess an inherent dignity, has concrete consequences for how people should treat one another and make decisions in politics, economics and social life, Pope Francis wrote.
