Each Friday during Lent, volunteers from the athletic association at St. John Neumann Parish in Homewood transform the former St. Joseph School gym into restaurant for the annual fish fry.
Parish fish fry raises funds, unites community
When you’ve been doing something for three decades, you must be doing something right. For at least 30 years, St. Ferdinand Parish fish frys have not only supported the parish, they’ve also been a source of unity for the community. It is also believed to be the first archdiocesan parish fish fry to feature drive-thru service.

Nena Zialkowski has been running the fish fry at St. Benedict Parish in Blue Island for more than 15 years, and she has it down to a science: the menu, the number of volunteers, how much fish to order to serve up to 1,200 meals each Friday during Lent.
