Twenty-two permanent and transitional deacons were ordained during two Masses on May 8 at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 N. State St., Chicago. Cardinal Cupich celebrated the morning ordination and Bishop Robert Casey, vicar general of the Archdiocese of Chicago, presided over the afternoon Mass.
Pandemic strains deacons’ work with disaster victims
When natural disasters strike across the country, a group of local deacons called Hope’s on the Way aid the victims by filling and shipping 5-gallon plastic buckets with much-needed cleaning supplies to the area.
Deacons hold 10th sunrise service praying for an end to violence
For the last 10 years, the Black deacons of Chicago have led sunrise services near around the start of the school year to pray for an end to gun violence in the city. They gathered again and continued praying on Sept. 12, this time not on Oakwood Beach but in the parking lot of St. Katharine Drexel Church, 9015 S. Harper Ave., because of social distancing.
New deacons to be ordained for archdiocese
Cardinal Cupich will ordain 27 men as permanent deacons to serve in the Archdiocese of Chicago in two Masses on Sept. 26 at St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel, 7740 S. Western Ave. Two men were ordained in August.
Meet the 2019 deacon class
Cardinal Cupich ordained 23 deacons on May 11. The group includes 16 permanent deacons who completed four years of formation. Married men may be ordained permanent deacons; single men who become permanent deacons must make a commitment to celibacy. Permanent deacons often work outside the church in addition to their diaconal ministry.
