Bread Truck ministry takes food to those on the margins
For the past 13 years, Anthony Brown has delivered lunch bags of food six days a week, driving the Port Ministries Bread Truck to people who gather at eight stops in Back of the Yards, Englewood, New City, Gage Park and Canaryville.
St. Maria Goretti students learning kindness this school year
On National Kindness Day, Nov. 13, students at St. Maria Goretti School in Schiller Park teamed up to help those less fortunate by making “kindness bags” filled with essentials like toothpaste, socks, deodorant and soap. Then they took those bags home to hand out to those they meet who are in need.

Soup kitchen has fed hungry in Uptown for over 40 years
At 3:30 p.m. on a Friday, the basement of St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, 4827 N. Kenmore Ave., is already buzzing with activity. There are volunteers chopping vegetables for soup and salad. Another is opening cans of black beans — a main ingredient for tonight’s soup — and others are putting rolls and slices of bread in baskets and placing them on the long tables that occupy the floor of the multipurpose room.

Monument marks graves of unknown, unborn, indigent
On July 13, Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Chicago welcomed 109 souls for burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 2755 W, 111th St. They were the last group to be buried in 300 plots donated to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office in 2012 following a backlog on burials.
