Pandemic difficult on already stressed caregivers
People who take care of aging, disabled or ill loved ones at home often felt isolated before the COVID-19 pandemic started shutting things down in March, according to people who have ministered to them.
Queen of the Rosary and other students return to class with new protocols
When kindergarten through eighth grade students returned to Queen of the Rosary School in Elk Grove Village Aug. 17, it wasn’t exactly like normal.
How faith can help with stress caused by pandemic
On Aug. 14, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a study showing that more than four in 10 Americans are struggling with mental health issues related to the pandemic. For many Catholics, faith can be a way to help them cope with such challenges, especially during trying times.
Parishes adjust religious education programs during COVID-19
Like many things, religious education is going to look a bit different at parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago this year.
Delayed first Communions now resuming at parishes
Bella Leahy was supposed to receive her first Communion at St. Catherine of Alexandria Church on April 25. When COVID-19 put a temporary stop to public celebration of Mass in March, that was postponed until Aug. 8, when Bella and her family took part in one of four scheduled first Communion Masses at the parish.
St. Eulalia’s Quinn Center adapts to keep feeding those in need
When the pandemic forced St. Eulalia Parish’s weekly soup kitchen to close because of social distancing requirements, the parish’s Quinn Community Center staff decided it could still distribute meals and groceries to people safely with a drive-thru model.
Pandemic creates unique challenges for deaf Catholics
COVID-19 has forced people all over the world to adapt to new ways of doing things. For those who are deaf, face masks require extra adjustments.
Fall semester looks different at local colleges, universities
Students at Catholic colleges and universities across the Archdiocese of Chicago are heading back to class, but what that looks like — and where it happens — depends on where they go to school.
The miracle of the Eucharist
In these days of the pandemic, I have heard many stories of heroism, of people going out of their way to attend to the needs of others. I am edified in learning about the extraordinary generosity of neighbors who take time to check up on others, to comfort those who have lost loved ones, to contribute to food pantries and to volunteer in parishes and other charitable agencies.
