Father Pfleger reinstated as senior pastor of St. Sabina
On Dec. 10, Cardinal Cupich sent a letter to members of the Faith Community of St. Sabina informing them that he had reinstated senior pastor Father Michael Pfleger, who was removed from ministry on Oct. 15 following the report of an allegation of sexual abuse of a minor.

Commission starts planning global report on child protection efforts
With a renewed membership, the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors met at the Vatican in late October and laid the groundwork for devising an annual report on child protection efforts by the Catholic Church globally.
20 years of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People
Twenty years ago, in October 2002, Cardinal Francis George led a delegation of five U.S. bishops to the Vatican to plead the case for approval of the measures the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops had voted on in Dallas four months earlier in the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.
Archdiocese adds names to list of clergy with substantiated allegations of sexual abuse
The list of clergy members with substantiated allegations of sexual abuse of a minor published on the Archdiocese of Chicago’s website grew from 78 to 149 on Oct. 14, after the archdiocese added the names of some priests who were deceased when the archdiocese received allegations against them, along with the names of priests from religious orders or priests from other dioceses who had allegations against them substantiated through their diocesan or religious order process.
USCCB issues annual audit on compliance with charter by dioceses, eparchies
The U.S. bishops’ annual report on compliance with the “Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People” shows that 2,930 victim survivors came forward with 3,103 allegations during the audit year of July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021. The number of allegations is 1,149 less than that reported in 2020, according to the audit report released July 12 by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Secretariat of Child and Youth Protection.

At the age of 94, retired Pope Benedict XVI said he knows he will soon stand before God’s judgment and he prayed that he would be forgiven for his shortcomings, including in handling allegations of clerical sexual abuse.
Confession can be a place where church fights abuse, Jesuit says
To protect the sacrament of reconciliation as a “channel of grace” for victims of sexual abuse, the Catholic Church must do a better job instructing priests on what to do if a victim recounts his or her abuse in the confessional and in the unlikely case that an abuser confesses, said Jesuit Father Hans Zollner.
Archdiocese reinstates Father Christopher Ciomek
In a letter to the members of St. Peter Damian Parish in Bartlett on Oct. 30, Cardinal Cupich announced that he had reinstated Father Christopher Ciomek, pastor, following an investigation into allegations that he had sexually abused a minor some 30 years ago, when he was a seminarian.
