Pope issues updated ‘Vos Estis’ text for handling abuse cases
Pope Francis has updated the procedures for investigating allegations of sexual abuse or of the cover up of abuse, specifying that the leaders of Vatican-recognized international Catholic lay associations and movements have the same responsibilities over their members that a bishop has over the priests of his diocese.
Cardinal Cupich contributes to international child safety symposium
The Archdiocese of Chicago has been a leader in preventing clerical sexual abuse of minors and reaching out to victims, Cardinal Cupich said in an online presentation that was part of the Symposium on Faith and Flourishing: Strategies for Preventing and Healing Child Sexual Abuse, hosted by Harvard University’s Human Flourishing program.
Vatican releases guide on how leaders must handle abuse allegations
The Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith released a 17-page document offering a step-by-step guide for how bishops, religious superiors and canon lawyers are supposed to handle accusations of alleged abuse by clerics against minors.

Decades-old clerical abuse documents made public
The documents concerning 30 archdiocesan priests who have been accused of abusing minors at various times during the last half century were made public on Jan. 21 by Jeffrey Anderson, a lawyer representing several of the abuse survivors. All of the documents relate to cases that date back many years, in some cases, decades. Ninety-five percent of the misconduct occurred prior to 1988. Today no priest with even one substantiated allegation of sexual abuse of a minor serves in ministry in the Archdiocese of Chicago.
