U.S. delegates to Synod of Bishops gather in Mundelein
Several U.S. delegates to the 16th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops to be held in October gathered Aug. 28-29 at the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary for a time of spiritual reflection.
Pope Francis on the synod: ‘Let us get used to listening to each other’
The synod process, which will hold the first of two crucial assemblies in the Vatican next month, is shaping up to be the most significant event in the Catholic Church since the Second Vatican Council.
‘Synodality’: A new word for an ancient reality
Pope Francis has insisted that for the church to be true to itself, we must act in a more synodal way. This is in keeping with the vision of renewal promoted in the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, which stressed the common dignity and mission of all the baptized for understanding the mystery and mission of the church.
Pope appoints hundreds to attend Synod of Bishops on Synodality
Pope Francis has appointed more than 450 participants, including dozens of women and men religious and laypeople from around the world, to attend the first general assembly of the Synod of Bishops on Synodality in October.
Synod style: Text outlines very different process for ‘synod on synodality’
Describing how the October assembly of the Synod of Bishops would work, Bishop Daniel E. Flores of Brownsville, Texas, told his fellow U.S. bishops, “Some things you just have to start doing in order to learn how it can be done, and how it can be done better.”
Synod document asks how to increase unity, participation, mission outreach
In a church that “bears the signs of serious crises of mistrust and lack of credibility,” members of the assembly of the Synod of Bishops will be asked to find ways to build community, encourage the contribution of every baptized person and strengthen the church’s primary mission of sharing the Gospel, said the working document for the October gathering.
Pope on Pentecost: Synod is journey in the Spirit, not ‘a parliament’
The Catholic Church’s current Synod of Bishops should not be a “parliament for demanding rights,” but a “journey in accordance with the Spirit,” Pope Francis said.
October Synod of Bishops begins to take shape
The church’s synod process is stepping up a gear. Pope Francis has authorized a landmark change which, for the first time, gives women the right to vote in the synod assembly in the Vatican in October. At least 70 members of the fall gathering will be non-bishops, and half of them must be women.
Pope Francis has made synods ‘the new way of being the church at every level,’ bishop says
Perhaps the word that will most be associated with Francis’ pontificate is “synodality,” said Lexington, Kentucky, Bishop John Stowe, a Conventual Franciscan.
North American Catholics identify harm of polarization, bishop says
In their discussions about the life of the church and “synodality,” or walking together, Catholics in United States and Canada noted the negative impact “polarization” is having on the church, said Bishop Daniel E. Flores of Brownsville, Texas.
