National Eucharistic Revival kicks off in the archdiocese
In 2019, a study by the Pew Research Center reported that only a third of Catholics believe the Eucharist is really the Body and Blood of Christ. In response to that startling report, the U.S. Conference of Catholic has established a National Eucharistic Revival.
A eucharistic revival that renews the church: Part V
A parishioner recently mentioned that my series of articles on the Eucharist triggered memories about the way Mass was celebrated before the Second Vatican Council. One of them related to how Communion was distributed: “Right after the consecration,” he noted, “the associate priest would come out and begin distributing Communion, using hosts from the tabernacle, as the pastor continued with the Mass. The pastor would do the same for the associate when he was celebrating Mass.”
A eucharistic revival that renews the church: Part IV
In the fall of 1965, I was a junior in high school. That was the year my home parish of Sts. Peter and Paul in South Omaha, Nebraska, was making plans to build a new church.
A Eucharistic Revival that Renews the Church: Part III
In his letter “Desiderio Desideravi,” Pope Francis addresses the complaint that a “sense of mystery” was lost with the Second Vatican Council’s reform of the liturgy.
Eucharistic preachers seek to inspire the faithful to encounter Jesus
Priests soon will be fanning out to dioceses across the country to inspire deeper reflection on the gift of the Eucharist to the church.
Repair scandal through the healing of the Eucharist
Pity the grocery shoppers in Buffalo, the school kids in Texas, their grieving families, and everyone now more afraid than ever of doing those simple, everyday things.
The risen Jesus and Holy Communion
There is no getting around it. The Gospels are unequivocal and unanimous. The risen Lord appeared to his disciples with all of the wounds he suffered on the cross. Repeatedly, when he appears he shows them his hands and side and even invites them to touch the wounds there.
The meaning of the Eucharist
You may recall that a couple of years ago we received a new translation of the Mass. A major change that needed some explanation was the text prayed at the time of the consecration of the chalice.
U.S. bishops vote to draft teaching document on the Eucharist
The U.S. bishops approved by a wide margin a plan to draft a document to examine the “meaning of the Eucharist in the life of the church” following a lengthy debate during their spring general assembly.
The miracle of the Eucharist
In these days of the pandemic, I have heard many stories of heroism, of people going out of their way to attend to the needs of others. I am edified in learning about the extraordinary generosity of neighbors who take time to check up on others, to comfort those who have lost loved ones, to contribute to food pantries and to volunteer in parishes and other charitable agencies.
