Before synod retreat, pope prays for listening instead of polarization
On the eve of a three-day spiritual retreat for participants in the assembly of the Synod of Bishops, Pope Francis prayed that members of the church may embrace silence to listen to the voice of God and one another.
From observation to celebration
From Jan. 18 to 25, Christian churches around the world observe the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Again we pray for the unity that Jesus wants: “that they may all be one, as you, Father, in me and I in you, may they be one in us, that the world may know that you have sent me” (Jn 17: 21-22).
Synodality and Christian unity
The Catholic Church is currently engaged in what some have called the largest consultative process in the history of humanity. After nearly two years of receiving feedback from millions of Catholics from around the world, 364 representatives of the Catholic Church gathered with Pope Francis at the Vatican from Oct. 4 to 29 for the Synod on Synodality.
Christian leaders sign care for creation declaration
With Lake Michigan as their backdrop, leaders from 13 local Christian denominations, including the Archdiocese of Chicago, gathered on Aug. 17 on the outdoor terrace of the Lakeside Center of McCormick Place to sign a “Care for Creation Ecumenical Declaration.”
Parliament of the World’s Religions had broad impact
More than 6,000 religious leaders from around the country gathered at McCormick Place Aug. 14-18 for the Parliament of the World’s Religions, and many local Catholics also took part.
Parliament of the World’s Religions bestows award named for Fr. Baima
Daniel Gómez-Ibáñez, a former trustee, chair and executive director of the Parliament of the World’s Religions, was presented the inaugural Very Rev. Thomas A. Baima Global Ethic Award at the 2023 parliament at McCormick Place on Aug. 14.
Embodying our faith at the Parliament of the World’s Religions
Entering the Palmer House in 1993, in wonder and awe, I met the world. People from all the major world religions, of diverse cultures, languages and dress, were gathered for the Parliament of the World’s Religions, 100 years after the first parliament at the 1893 World’s Colombian Exposition.
Parliament of World’s Religions coming to Chicago in August
Later this summer, Chicago will welcome thousands of members of religious traditions spanning the globe to a convening of the Parliament of the World’s Religions. The parliament will gather Christians, Jews, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Hindus and others, including people from 200 religious, indigenous and secular belief systems representing more than 80 nations at McCormick Place Aug. 14-18 to advance the goals of interfaith understanding, harmony and respect.
Mundelein at 100: Assyrian Orthodox students found a home at seminary
The University of St. Mary of the Lake counts plenty of Catholic prelates among the men who studied there. Now, it can count the leader of the Assyrian Church of the East. Mar Awa Royel, born in Chicago, was elected patriarch in Erbil, Iraq, in September.
Catholics, Greek Orthodox pray for the care of creation
Cardinal Cupich and Greek Orthodox Metropolitan Nathanael led a congregation of about 100 people in the seventh annual solemn vespers for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Glenview Oct. 22.
