Panel: What is next for the church after the synod?
Catholics must embrace their diversity and build not only friendship but also trust across lines that might divide them to move forward as a synodal church, according to two participants in the Synod of Bishops on synodality, which came to a close in October.
The astounding truth of God’s love
Cardinal Cupich delivered the following homily at Holy Name Cathedral on Nov. 24 on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of Holy Name Parish:
On fire with hope
What are your best Advent memories? You’ve got some, right? Maybe it was that time your family lit the candles on the Advent wreath at Mass. Or the time you put up a Jesse tree. No, not a Christmas tree. Not during Advent.
Holy Name Cathedral Parish celebrates 175 years
Holy Name Cathedral was filled near to capacity on Nov. 24 for Mass with Cardinal Cupich to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the founding of the parish on Nov. 18, 1849.
Advent: Slow down, appreciate anticipation of Christmas
As Catholics begin a new liturgical year with the first Sunday of Advent, liturgical and catechetical leaders are reminding people to slow down and appreciate the weeks of hope and anticipation that lead up to Christmas.
Father Martin Marren reinstated to ministry
On Nov. 16, Cardinal Cupich sent the following letter to Our Lady at St. Germaine, St. Gerald, St. Cajetan, St. John Fisher, St. John Neumann, St. Gianna and St. Barnabas Parishes informing them of the reinstatement of Father Martin Marren:
Dispensation for Immaculate Conception feast
Cardinal Cupich has issued a decree granting a dispensation from the holy day obligation for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception this year.
Dec. 8: Second Sunday of Advent
Scripture consistently encourages us to search for and learn about God. Yet, when we ask difficult questions about God or our faith, we may sometimes hear a response like, “It is just a mystery.” This type of answer can feel dismissive.
Dec. 1: First Sunday of Advent
The Old Testament displays the unique understandings of human anatomy common to biblical authors and possibly even for many of the people of the ancient Near East. However, this is often not accessible in English translations of the Old Testament.
Embracing the call to welcome
In the parable of the loaves and fishes, Jesus says to the Apostles, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves” (Mt 14:16). His message is clear: We are called to reach out to others in need and share what we have. The more we open our hearts to others, the more God equips us to give.
