A new year, a fresh start
Culturally, January is the month of transition. The past is put behind us, as historians chronicle major events of the past year, celebrities are memorialized and record books are closed. At the same time, we begin the first days of a new year by making resolutions and predictions, inaugurating new leadership, and opening new accounting procedures to measure investments and assess taxes. This is the world we live in as we start a new year.

Jan. 19: Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
From the Gospel of John, we can glean the most historical information about the time in which Jesus lived. The story of the wedding at Cana (Jn 2:1-11) provides a good example of what we can and cannot learn about Jesus and the world in which he lived.
Jan. 12: Baptism of the Lord
Today’s readings were clearly arranged to draw the connection between the Christian messianic understanding of Isaiah’s servant songs to Jesus, where God’s words echo those of the prophet Isaiah, “Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, upon whom I have put my spirit” (Is 42:1; Lk 3:22). The reading from Acts 10 provides a basic script that teaches early followers of Jesus how to discuss the core tenets of their belief in him with others.
Creating opportunities for service and encounter
Just days have passed since Christmas, and yet what a dramatic transition we have experienced. The one we spent weeks preparing for, at last, has arrived. As the Scripture so recently shared, the shepherds, awestruck at having found the infant Jesus lying in a manger, left joyfully to spread the news. All who heard it were amazed.
