Laypeople honored for service, ministry to church Annual awards to be bestowed Nov. 8 at Holy Name Cathedral

Each year, the Archdiocese of Chicago grants two kinds of awards to lay men and women for their dedication to the church and their ministries. These are the recipients for 2009.

Bishop Quarter Award

The Bishop Quarter Award, named for Bishop William Quarter, the first bishop of Chicago, is given each year to one layperson or married couple in each vicariate who demonstrates consistent service to the ministries of the archdiocese’s vicariates. Episcopal vicars nominate recipients. This following people received this year’s awards:

Vicariate I: Bernie and Dorothy Santowski of Queen of the Rosary Parish in Elk Grove Village have been married for 57 years and have nine children, 21 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. All of their children are alumni of the parish school, and they have been involved in many parish ministries as well as volunteering in their community. Bernie has been active in the Knights of Columbus, Dorothy in the Ladies Auxiliary, and both have done charity work for Catholic Charities and Maryville Academy,

Vicariate II: Lou and Jean Glunz of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Wilmette have been active members of the church for many years, and have been deeply involved in Catholic Charities. Presently, Lou Glunz serves as the president of the Catholic Charities Board. In addition to their many archdiocesan projects, the Glunzes are very active members of their parish.

Vicariate III: Marilu Gonzalez of St. Agnes of Bohemia Parish is a wife and a mother of three grown children and has been a very active member of the parish for more than 25 years. She has been a member of the parish council, an extraordinary minister of holy Communion, worked on the yearly parish carnival, while working in local community organizations to help the community face the problems of gang violence, support for immigrants. Marilu has also been associated with Notre Dame University’s Center for Social Concerns in their efforts to better understand the challenges facing the Hispanic community in the Chicago area. She has been an advocate for undocumented immigrants and for Congress to pass a comprehensive reform of immigration laws. This summer, she prepared and guided a group of young adults from several parishes in an “immersion” experience at the U.S./Mexico border. She recently received a masters of divinity from Catholic Theological Union; her Catholic faith is strong and she is an inspiration to many.

Vicariate IV: Dominican Sister Frances Fitzpatrick retired in June after many years of dedicated service as Vicariate IV Assistant Superintendent of Catholic Schools.

Vicariate V: Richard Guzior of St. James Parish-Sag Bridge shares his time and treasure in many of the organizations, parishes and programs in Vicariate V: He volunteers at the Port Ministries; was instrumental in the opening of many perpetual adoration chapels; is involved in evangelization, catechesis and adult formation; and supports health care institutions, especially Holy Family Villa. His support to priests, especially the elderly, is remarkable.

Vicariate VI: Javier Castillo of St. Francis De Sales Parish is a pastoral associate at St. Francis and also has assisted at nearby St. George for almost five years in various capacities, including as director of religious education and parish business manager. He also volunteers as coordinator for the teen group, altar servers, adult faith formation and the RCIA, and directs the “Via Crucis” (Living Way of the Cross), which draws membership from several local churches. He also helps with the organization of “circulo de Oracion,” a monthly healing Mass at St. Francis. Parishioners find him compassionate, generous and devout; he is eloquent, intelligent, open to new ideas, and loyal to orthodox teachings; he works well with people even in times of crisis. He never complains and no service is below his dignity. He is versatile in philosophy and theology and has a great passion for catechesis; is not only bi-lingual in English and Spanish, he has a good knowledge of biblical Greek and Latin, and translates homilies for priests in the area.

Christifideles Award

The Christifideles Award is given to Catholic laypeople who have, by participating in parish life, demonstrated the personal and ministerial renewal called for by the papal exhortation Christifideles Laici, calling the laity to the “vocation of responsibility for the church’s life springing from the gift and mission of their baptism.” More than 150 individuals and married couples were nominated by their pastors and will receive the award this year.
